Ryley Walker: August 19, 2023 Deep in the Valley

August 24, 2023
By

Welcome to our coverage of Deep in the Valley 2023! The second year of our favorite Hudson Valley fest was again held at beautiful From the Ground Brewery in Red Hook, NY and hosted by our friends at Raven Sings the Blues. Thanks to everyone involved for their hospitality. I can’t wait to see you there next year. In the meantime, relax and enjoy some tunes from the day…

First off here’s the day’s headliner Ryley Walker, playing in duo configuration with Ryan Jewell. While not quite full-band, seeing Ryley and Ryan together is always magical and this performance doesn’t disappoint in the least. Ryley-classics “The Halfwit in Me” and “The Roundabout” take center stage here with the jams and detours we love from these songs. I’m a massive fan of Course in Fable and consider it Ryley’s finest, so I was glad to hear “Rang Dizzy” from that one. The last song is an instrumental which I’m sure has a title that is escaping me. Listening back I almost feel like I’m in a field in Red Hook, New York with some apple trees off to the side. This one’s the highlight of a nearly perfect day.

I recorded this with the MBHO omnis at the stage lip, combined with a board feed courtesy of engineer Daniel Stout. The sound quality is outstanding. Enjoy!

Rose City Band: July 23, 2023 Tubby’s (Kingston, NY)

July 27, 2023
By

I’ve been waiting for years to see a Rose City Band show. For 18 of those months, we were all waiting to see anything but even once shows started happening the band didn’t come East. When they finally had East Coast dates booked the tour was, sadly, cancelled due to covid. This past Sunday it finally happened. Rose City Band played their first show EVER in NY at Tubby’s and we have the recording.

Rose City Band is Ripley Johnson’s (Wooden Shjips, Moon Duo) outlet for fusing the musical loves of his youth; Neil Young, Grateful Dead and Van Morrison are noticeable touch points, with the classic country sounds of Merle Haggard, Buck Owens and the like. During interviews Ripley has often referred to this as summertime music and that’s always the association I’ve had with it. I have vivid memories of sitting on my deck in late spring and early summer of 2020 with nothing to do but enjoy the sunshiny reverb and pedal steel from the first two Rose City Band albums. Nowhere to go, no one to see. Nothing to do but enjoy the turn of the season and the tunes. That experience hasn’t changed much. It’s always as the sun starts coming out in the Hudson Valley that I turn to these albums.

During the recording process Ripley has historically handled the heavy lifting alone but live he is supported by an excellent band of Portland heavy hitters. They opened the show with a breezy take on “Empty Bottles” from 2020’s Summerlong eventually making their way to a fantastic medley of Mariposa> Me and Willie > Reno Shuffle that truly embraced the choogle-charged, sun baked flow of Cosmic Americana. The sold-out crowd was loud and appreciative all night. New Yorkers aren’t well known for their friendliness but hopefully the band felt the love we gave them for their first trip to the state.

Rose City Band has two more shows left on this leg of the tour before a short break. They will be back at it in early September for another run of East Coast shows with support from Rosali. These will be must see shows if you are in the area; Rosali with the David Nance band backing her was the best set of music I saw all last year. Rose City Band then swings back west in October before heading to Europe in November. Plenty of chances to get out and see them!

I recorded this from my usual spot in the back of the room by the soundboard with my MBHO’s. Tubby’s FOH engineer Kyle provided the excellent mix and board feed. Enjoy!

Meridian Brothers: July 17, 2023 Tubby’s (Kingston, NY)

July 24, 2023
By

Long time Kingston/Hudson Valley residents all mourn the loss of our beloved venue, BSP. Thankfully the person behind all those great shows, Mike Amari, is still at it, bringing interesting and creative music to the area under the name Chosen Family Presents. He’s been mostly booking at the beautiful sculpture park Opus 40 but last week we were lucky to have him bring Merdian Brothers into Tubby’s for two sold shows.

Meridian Brothers is the brainchild of Eblis Javier Alvarez Vargas, the Bogota, Columbia based musician and producer. Eblis takes the traditional rhythms of the Carribean and Andes and fuses them with modern psychedelia and electronic dance music into an unforgettable neo-tropical groove that Gilles Peterson referred to as “twisted Cumbia that terrorizes the dance floor”. This is accurate; I’ve never seen the tiny live room at Tubby’s pulsating like this.

On the recordings Eblis plays everything, but in a live setting he is joined by an incredible band that fills this music with personality and life. The entire band seemed to be having as much fun as the audience. The bass player, Cesar Quevedo Barrero, had an ear-to-ear grin from the beginning of the set straight through the encore. This band is smoking hot and should not be missed

Meridian Brothers are taking a short break before continuing the tour in Austin and points West. If they are going to be anywhere near you, go. This was a highlight of the year for me and judging by the crowd’s response I’d guess that feeling was universal. I recorded both shows but I am posting the first night since the crowd’s enthusiasm and excitement can almost be felt in the recording. Special shout out to the Meridian Brothers front of house engineer Alejandro Araujo Larrahondo for an excellent mix.

Garcia Peoples: June 24, 2023 Tubby’s (Kingston, NY)

July 17, 2023
By

The Nyctaper team’s support of site favorites Garcia Peoples continues! This show was a bit of a one off at their home away from home, Tubby’s.

The set opened with “Break Me Down” which I hadn’t seen them play since the now legendary “Natural Factsrelease show in 2019. They worked through several of the Natural Facts tunes and two really spectacular pieces of improv very much worth your time.

Garcia Peoples has a bunch of excellent shows lived up for next month. They will be part of the absolutely LOADED line up at Raven Sings The Blue’s Deep in The Valley festival. Additionally they are playing several dates with William Tyler which may prove to be the tour of the summer. I’ll be at the Tubby’s date for sure. Hope to see you there!

I recorded this from my usual spot by the soundboard with the MBHO’s and a board feed from Tubby’s FOH engineer Will. Enjoy!

Zachary Cale: May 16, 2023 Tubby’s (Kingston, NY)

June 14, 2023
By

It’s been a while since Zachary Cale was last featured on this site but a glance at his band camp page shows he hasn’t been silent. In addition to the treasure trove of already available music he has new material in the works, and we were treated to a bunch of it during this performance.

While this is the last set to be posted from the Island House night at Tubby’s, this was actually the opening set of the night. With Robert Boston on keys and J.R. Bohannon on pedal steel Cale eased the audience into 5 straight new tunes. This is easy listening in the best sense of the phrase. On three separate occasions I sat down at my desk to mix this and then found myself, several minutes later, slowly drifting back to reality. I wasn’t “processing” anything; I was just enjoying the experience of hearing new music and allowing it to transport me to dreamland. The trio also treated us to a beautiful version of Neil Young’s “Motion Pictures”; a song perfectly tailored to Cale’s relaxed and comfortably honest vocal delivery. The set closed with “Dear Shadow”, the loan old song of the night, from 2013’s “Blue Rider”.

These unreleased songs will be released on a forthcoming instrumental based record Cale has in the works. I’m very excited to see how this flesh out. Additionally, he has several shows in the coming days including a July 2 bill with the excellent Stella Kola at Mama Tried in Brooklyn which is a must see if you’re in the area.

I recorded this from my usual spot by the soundboard with the MBHO’s and a board feed from Tubby’s FOH engineer Kyle. Enjoy!

Purling Hiss: April 23, 2023 Union Pool

June 11, 2023
By

Purling Hiss hit the road for the first time in a while to support their new record on Drag City, Drag On Girard. Last time I saw the ‘Hiss it was a solo Mike Polizze show opening for Dungen. I can’t even remember when that was but oh it’s great to be back. Long before I began contributing here at NYCTaper I followed along with all the excellent recordings especially from the Water on Mars-era. While I would have loved to hear the title track from that one, we got a solid setlist from them closing out their second night at Union Pool, including oldies “Almost Washed My Hair” and “Run From the City.” If you missed Purling Hiss at Union Pool, they’re playing a free show at Rippers on August 25th. Do it!

I recorded this from our usual spot at Union Pool with a feed from the engineer, Jase, who was responsible for the excellent sound all night. And thanks to all the folks for making it one of our favorite venues!
