Sunwatchers & Eugene Chadbourne: May 10, 2019 Nublu Classic

June 4, 2019
By

Last month, Sunwatchers and Eugene Chadbourne played Nublu Classic in belated support of 3 Characters, their collaborative double-LP of Minutemen and Doug Sahm covers. The album was released in November, but perhaps due to scheduling they didn’t get the properly inaugurate it into the world until May. Last time we got to see Sunwatchers and Doc Chad play live, they did a trio of Chuck Berry tunes (he had recently passed) plus covers of songs by Sonny Rollins, Love, and John Lee Hooker. This time it’s all Minutemen and Doug Sahm songs, with a writing assist from Albert Alyer on the mashup “Joe McCarthy’s Ghost(s).” Perhaps it’s from the rigors of recording, or a whole lot of practice, but they’ve got these songs down tight. The only one not recorded for the album (and maybe the highlight of this set) is their delightful take on “Stoned Faces Don’t Lie,” a Doug Sahm number from way back with the Sir Douglas Quintet. It’s a shame that one didn’t make it onto the album, but better maybe that it’s just incentive for Sunwatchers and Eugene Chadbourne to ride again!

Speaking of Sunwatchers, grab tickets for their upcoming Rocks Off Cruise gig with Garcia Peoples. Yes, that’s Sunwatchers and Garcia Peoples on a boat. June 15th. Go for it.

Eugene Chadbourne & Sunwatchers: April 25, 2017 Union Pool

May 30, 2017
By

Back in April, psych-freejazz outfit Sunwatchers did a three-week residency at Union Pool, each week performing with some local and not-so-local friends. To cap off the residency they brought out Eugene Chadbourne for an opening set (that recording here) plus a very special collaboration between Chadbourne and the ‘Watchers. It doesn’t get much better than these guys performing some Minutemen, Sonny Rollins, and Chuck Berry tunes together—but then somehow it does when they break free of Earth’s gravity on John Lee Hooker’s “Boogie Chillen.” Apparently there’s going to be an album featuring Sunwatchers backing Doc Chad (Chadwatchers, anyone?) and if that manages to be half as good as this set, it’ll be something for sure.

I recorded this from our usual location at Union Pool with a board feed courtesy of our bud Doug. The sound is excellent. Enjoy!

Eugene Chadbourne: April 25, 2017 Union Pool

May 17, 2017

Eugene Chadbourne—Doc Chad for the familiar—is likely the only musician living who could (would?) play you a Woody Guthrie song on the banjo and also destroy your eardrums with the electric rake. With literally zillions of releases over the last forty years, he’s done folk, jazz, rock, noise, and everything in between. In fact, it’s those in betweens where Doc Chad spends most of his time, never stagnating on one genre, one band, one collaborator, or even one instrument—as if any of those things could claim to define his music. Yes, Doc Chad is a national treasure.

This set from Union Pool a few weeks back has got all the goods: covers of Guthrie and Beefheart, an ode to Conway Twitty, a medly of Johnny Paycheck tunes, and some Chadbourne originals. No electric rake, but you can’t have everything can you?

I recorded this from our usual location at Union Pool with a board feed courtesy of our bud Doug. The sound is excellent. Enjoy!

Eugene Chadbourne-Steve Gunn-Mary Lattimore: September 11, 2015 WXDU/WXYC/WKNC Day Show, King’s (Raleigh, NC)

For their final act of their day show at King’s, Triangle college radio stations WXDU, WKNC and WXYC outdid themselves with a three-way-combo of stringed instrument experts. Legendary improvisational guitarist and banjo player Eugene Chadbourne, whose long list of collaborators runs the gamut from Camper Van Beethoven to John Zorn, was joined by New Yorker and longtime site favorite Steve Gunn and the renowned experimental harpist Mary Lattimore. Having never played together before, the three worked out their collaborative style in real time, which was a fascinating process to watch, and even more of one to hear. It was fascinating to watch Lattimore turn an instrument known for its delicacy into an aggressive, atonal element, with her slapping at its sides for percussive effect. Gunn and Chadbourne likewise built off of each other, with Chadbourne providing emphatic bursts of noise at points on the banjo. The piece flowed from delicate and restrained to harsh and intense minute-to-minute, holding your attention as you wondered where the trio would end up next, and reveling in the fact that they might not be quite sure, either. Chadbourne even added some vocals at the end, with lines referencing the traditional song “I Wish I Was A Mole In the Ground.” It’s safe to say that nothing else about this unique meeting was “traditional.”

I recorded this set in the same manner as the day’s other recordings, with a soundboard feed from King’s engineer Justin together with Schoeps MK4V microphones onstage. There is a bit of DI hiss on the quiet passages, but overall the sound is excellent. Enjoy!
