Disappears: April 19, 2012 Glasslands – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

As one of the anchors of the current Chicago scene, Disappears are a hard band to outshine. They headlined this night’s Glasslands show featuring Lotus Plaza (that recording [HERE]) and the Brooklyn guitarist Noveller (that recording coming soon) the same way that they carried a previous show I attended with the startling Brooklyn band The Psychic Paramount: by being relentless, sharp and ready with an album’s worth of killer new songs. At that earlier show, the band’s new record Pre Language was unreleased. With the album now having been out for a little while, the already-tight band is completely dialed in on the new songs, which represent their best and most approachable material to date. Disappears deliver a dark, overdriven style of rock, with a Sonic Youth-reminiscent guitar squall backing the Mark E. Smith-reminiscent vocals of frontman Brian Case, processed through a megaphone-style effect. They’re the right band to propel the end of a night – and not just because it gave everyone confirmation that Steve Shelley has landed on his feet post-Sonic Youth.

Predictably, this set was heavy on Pre Language material, including “Replicate”, which we first experienced at the Union Hall show last year, and new favorites like the title track and “Hibernation Sickness”. The sound benefited heavily from the band’s touring engineer, who worked with them on the album and tuned the upgraded Glasslands sound system to perfection.

We recorded this set in the same manner as the Lotus Plaza recording, with Schoeps MK5 cardioid microphones and a soundboard feed.  The sound is even better than that recording due to the aforementioned engineer’s flawless mix. The sound is outstanding. Enjoy!

Lotus Plaza: April 19, 2012 Glasslands – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

There is a certain atmosphere that Glasslands has when the show you are attending has become a happening. The stage is swarmed by cameras; the AC unit is chugging to keep the room cool. The bar is slammed; the room is so packed there are people watching from the bathroom stairs. The anticipation is palpable; the night is electric. If there is something that can answer the question for you of why you are in this city, or why you “do this”, these nights are it. They don’t happen in other places; don’t feel the same, don’t smell the same, don’t sound the same. You know that as long as there are places like this in this city, as long as there are nights like this, you ought to be there. This Lotus Plaza show, following on the heels of the release of their critically-acclaimed second record, was one of those nights.

In terms of popularity, Lotus Plaza has the built-in advantage of being in an already-famous band – Lockett Pundt is the second half of the brilliant songwriting team that makes up Deerhunter – the McCartney to Bradford Cox’s Lennon (or is it the other way around?). Still, Lotus Plaza’s second record, Spooky Action at a Distance, stands on its own.  While the hilarious Pitchfork review included sentences like this gem – “Moreover, along the lines of Real Estate and especially the War On Drugs, Pundt embodies a wakeful, meditative state associated with various forms of transit: your physical being stays relatively still while being in motion, a symbiosis between human and mechanical effort” – fundamentally the site got it right in anointing the record with “Best New Music” status. The songwriting is sharper than on The Floodlight Collective; where that album felt more like a solo album, Spooky Action is loaded with standout tracks. “Eveningness” was a highlight in the live setting just as it is on the album, as was the set opener of “Untitled” into “Strangers”. But just so you won’t completely forget Pundt’s connection to Deerhunter, Pundt threw in a sprawling nine-minute track mid-set, “Come Back” from the band’s recent split 10″ single. Pundt may not be known for stage antics the way Cox is, but he more than holds his own as a frontman, not least because his music creates such immediate and powerful connections with his listeners. Most shows by recently-hyped bands draw a listless “see and be seen” crowd that ignores most of the music; Lotus Plaza held us all in thrall.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK5 cardiod mics and a soundboard feed from Josh, the head FOH at Glasslands. The sound quality is excellent.  Enjoy!

This show was also recorded by Pitchfork.tv, and you should be able to see clips of it on Pitchfork soon. Thanks to the Pitchfork crew for their hospitality and sharing the recording area with us.

Sleepy Sun: April 9, 2012 Glasslands – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

The San Francisco band Sleepy Sun brought the full force of their West Coast style of pscyh rock to bear last Monday night, an ideal counterpoint to the darker, heavier style of Brooklyn’s White Hills, who preceded them on the bill (that recording [HERE]).  Playing this show at Glasslands plus a second NYC show at Mercury Lounge the following night to celebrate the release of their third full-length Spine Hits and in an obviously good mood, the band came with amps cranked and ready to rock n’ roll.  From the first notes of the show opener, the chugging “Martyr’s Mantra” Sleepy Sun concocted a dialed-in wall of sound that shook the club to its foundations. Fortunately, the band also knows when to slow things down; tempo changes like “Siouxsie Blaqq” and “Sandstorm Woman” show off a different side of the band and give the band’s songwriting a chance to shine.

Sleepy Sun are easily lumped into the ever-broadening “psych rock” category (I think if you’re on ATP Recordings, like they are, it’s almost a given) on the basis of their love of effects pedals and obvious stylistic nods to the late 60s/early 70s San Francisco sound. But live, it’s hard to miss a more mainstream reference – the mighty Led Zeppelin. Drummer Brian Tice is ferocious on the kit, and his playing gives the swirling guitars a backbone of pure power, such as on “Stivey Pond” and “She Rex”. This band also clearly believes in rocking as a concept; frontman Bret Constantino is an intense frontman (so intense that he nearly destroyed one of the club’s high quality monitors in the process!) and he and his bandmates are the kind of band that could easily command a much bigger room. They’re also much more focused on strong songwriting and pop hooks than some of their contemporaries; Spine Hits could easily be an FM radio favorite, if rock radio still existed, and I’m sure it’ll be in rotation on the appropriate SiriusXM/streaming channels, as it’s one of the band’s best albums to date.  Here’s to hoping we see them in New York again soon… at this year’s ATP NY, perhaps?

I recorded this set with an excellent soundboard feed from the Glasslands head FOH Josh, plus Schoeps MK22 microphones and a very warm Aerco preamp that captured the sound perfectly. Enjoy!

Thanks as always to the Glasslands team and PopGun Booking for their hospitality.

White Hills: April 9, 2012 Glasslands – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs [Plus Northside Festival Announcement]

April 18, 2012

It is a distinct pleasure to finally present a recording of the stellar Brooklyn heavy psych rock act White Hills. We have been following the Hills for a few years now, and have recorded them a few times, but in the past things never quite worked out. This show at Glasslands – also filmed for future release by the professional video production team PanopticonNYC – exceeded everyone’s expectations.

White Hills are a prolific band – so much so that even though I’ve seen them in each of the past four years, they’ve never been promoting the same album twice. The last time I saw them, they were touring behind H-p1, a 72-minute opus of deep psychedelic riffage. Their new record, Frying On this Rock, mostly continues H-p1’s traditions, and like that record, its improvisation-baiting material is best experienced in the live setting, where frontman Dave W. and bassist Ego Sensation never hold back. This show was a veritable tour of the band’s last several records, kicking off with “Oceans of Sound” from their 2009 Thrill Jockey debut, Heads On Fire, and jamming straight into the monster “Three Quarters” off of the eponymous White Hills, arguably their best record to date. True to form, the set gave Dave and Ego Sensation plenty of room to delve into their deepest space rock, including the new number “Pads of Light” and this night’s take on another classic from White Hills, the set closer “Dead”.

I recorded this set with a soundboard feed provided by the head Glasslands FOH Josh, and Schoeps MK22 microphones to capture the full force of the band.  The recording is excellent and we are pleased to finally have White Hills on the site!

White Hills will be co-headlining our 2012 Northside Festival showcase on Thursday, June 14 at 285 Kent.  Also on the bill will be NYCTaper favorites and co-headliners Pontiak along with Thrill Jockey bandmates Rhyton and one of our favorite new Brooklyn bands, EULA.

Team Genius: February 22, 2012 Glasslands – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

Here are some things I found out about Team Genius at their recent Glasslands show.  First, they really are a “team” – a seven-person, co-ed band with players handling a variety of instruments.  Second, they love party gags – from the Reagan masks available for sale at the merch table to the kazoos, confetti and other party staples in heavy use in the crowd.  Third, their crowd comes to party – you can’t miss the good-natured heckling on this record.  And finally, despite the evident sense of humor they have about the whole thing, they write some pretty damn good pop songs.

This show featured several bands from the Paper Garden Records family, and it’s a label/publicity firm that always keeps you guessing.  Rather than laser in on a particular genre, sound, or aesthetic, Paper Garden is willing to take risks with a wide spectrum of bands.  One thing their bands do have in common, though, is musical chops and pop sensibility, and Team Genius is no exception.  Their almost relentlessly upbeat sound and sense of humor belies some serious musicianship that is in evidence throughout this set, which began strong with “Chase You Down” and closed equally strongly with the band’s cover of Van Morrison’s “Gloria”.  Team Genius currently have a few releases to their name, but now that they have joined the Paper Garden fold, expect a new full-length soon.

hi and lo and I recorded this set with Schoeps MK5 cardiod mics in our usual spot in the venue, plus a soundboard feed from Jeremy of Glasslands.  Other than a few instances of static from the band’s equipment, the sound quality is excellent, and the good natured heckling only adds to the experience.  Enjoy!

Zambri: December 9, 2011 Glasslands – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

[Not very good photos in low light by acidjack. The recording is much better than the photos]

I first saw Zambri back in January of 2010 at Rock Shop (which predates their “first show” according to their Wikipedia page by about 8 months, but anyway), when sisters Cristi Jo and Jessica Zambri were still working out the kinks of their live act and presentation – though they were already pretty compelling.  By the time hi and lo and I caught them on this night at Glasslands nearly two years later, the group had just released their EP, Glossolalia, and polished the live versions of their songs – a difficult feat for songs constructed from layers of studio sounds.  Glossolalia is a thrilling EP for that reason, combining a scary and sexy vibe (see, for example, “Heather”).  While the album is a great headphone listen, the songs work in the live setting as well, not least because the sisters have developed ways to let them move around the stage and perform rather than being stuck behind consoles all show.  Of the many times I have seen Zambri in the past couple years (including backing Hooray for Earth, whose Noel Heroux has a mixing credit on Glossolalia), this was by far the best.  If the sisters’ forthcoming full-length, House of Baasa, has an album’s worth of tracks of Glossolalia’s quality, and keep performing like this, they should be finding themselves at the next level in no time.  We are streaming two of the best of the night’s tracks, “Heather” and “To Keep Back”, below.

Thanks to Kanine Records for permitting us to record and share this performance.  House of Baasa will be released on April 10.

Donora: February 22, 2012 Glasslands – FLAC/MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

In the wonderful melting pot that is Glasslands, we caught a short but powerful performance by Donora. Admittedly, this is a band that should have been on my radar long ago, so I was happy they were able to travel in from Pittsburgh while crashing the living room of Ball of Flame Shoot Fire for their most recent stint in Brooklyn.

Playing in support of Team Genius, Donora cruised through a mix of songs from their 2008 self-titled EP Donora and their 2011 EP Boyfriends, Girlfriends. Catchy pop songs like “Shhh” and “Boom Boom” were balanced by songs like “The Chorus” which has an epic, almost Arcade Fire, feel to it when (ironically) the chorus ensues.

Acidjack and I recorded this with an excellent soundboard feed from the house engineer as well as pair of Schoeps MK5 cardioid microphones located in our usual, optimal spot. We ran directly into an Oade modified R44 recorder this night and probably don’t run this combination as often as we should because despite its simplicity, the outcome never fails to please. We captured a fantastic performance with a great setup and really hope you enjoy the recording!

Widowspeak: March 3, 2012 Glasslands – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

Since we last checked in with Widowspeak at our CMJ Day Party, their star has only continued to rise.  It’s always a good sign when, months after a band’s initial record release (and therefore, the peak in the PR hype cycle) their shows are more crowded than they were then.  This Saturday night, Glasslands was completely packed-to-the-rafters sold out, which always gives this venue great energy.  Clearly, Widowspeak has been busy since the release of their eponymous debut album on Captured Tracks.  This show found the band leading off with a new song, “Camel” and playing a number of other new numbers, including some played for the first time.

While vocalist Molly Hamilton’s style has earned a few comparisons to artists like Cat Power, fortunately, her stage persona does not.  Since the first time I saw the band, Hamilton has gained scads of confidence and poise – she smiles quite a lot onstage now, and her playing and delivery benefit from her positive attitude. Widowspeak are what I think of as a winter band – their downbeat sound is practically a touchstone of several of the members’ roots in the Pacific Northwest – but it’s a sound that, paradoxically, makes me happy.  There’s the nostalgia aspect, sure, but there’s also the patient songcraft, the authenticity, and the strength of the band and its sound.  Pretty much everything about Widowspeak is something I can pull for.

The band played on this night with a second guitarist, which gave songs like “In the Pines” (perhaps my favorite of all the band’s songs) new density and heft.  Of the new material, the standout for me was “7 Minutes”, a slightly more upbeat guitar-driven track that is one of the most anthemic songs the band has attempted to date.  The set closed with the band’s biggest song to date, “Harsh Realm”, another excellent song that is always a crowd pleaser.

In a collaboration with the new management team at Glasslands (also the team behing PopGun Booking), I recorded this set with a newly-installed recording rig provided for the club by nyctaper.  Overall I am pleased with the results, with the caveat that you can hear some issues with one of the kick drum mics and one of the guitar amps at a few points in the recording.  Enjoy!

Fantasmas: February 1, 2012 Glasslands – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

Fantasmas are the Brooklyn-based brainchild of Kam Tambini, who along with Austin Formica (guitar), Avi Bajpai (drums) and Adam Glaser (bass/vox) craft aggressive post-punk that adds a melodic element to their distortion-soaked sound.  Tambini hails from Peru, so the band’s set at Glasslands opening for Grandfather appropriately kicked off with a Spanish-language track, “La Maga” before drilling the inspired “Dead Days”, that gave me fond memories of many mid- to late-80s U.S. and British post-punkers.  The band also did an inspired cover of Thurston Moore’s “Hang Out” that left no doubt where their allegiances lay.  Fantasmas have a 7″ available on bandcamp for now, but be on the lookout for their future releases and shows in the area.

I recorded this set in the same manner as the Grandfather recording, but had a bit more to work with in terms of the board feed.  The results are excellent.  Enjoy!

Backwords, of Brooklyn, are one of those bands that manages to sound classic and completely new at the same time.   Some of their tunes fall solidly in the gentler folk camp; at other times they can get psychedelic and jammy.  This opening set at Glasslands showed off both sides, with their approachable, melodic material, mostly from their current record By the Neck, predominating.  The band maintained an upbeat, easygoing vibe for the crowd of friends and fans that showed up early to catch their set.  I was partial to “Last One”, which drew more from the band’s ’60s pop-folk influences.  They closed on an especially strong note, with the jammy “Way Around” that gave them a chance to show off their chops on guitar and bass.  The band’s next shows will be down south, but be on the lookout for them when they next play New York.

Thanks to Jeff Kilgour and Tijuana Gift Shop for inviting us to the show.

I recorded this set with AKG large-diaphragm mics that melded well with the band’s classic sound.  The vocals are occasionally a tad high in the house mix for my taste, but overall it is an excellent representation of the night.  Enjoy!
