Mountain Movers: September 30, 2023 Tubby’s Fifth Anniversary

The NYCTaper coverage of Tubby’s Fifth Anniversary returns with site favorites Mountain Movers! 

The Movers have been at it for a while but still seem fresh. In fact, this was probably the most vibrant set I’d seen from them. They came out firing with “My Holy Shrine”; the first taste of the new material available on their forthcoming record “Walking After Dark”. This new gem was followed by old favorite, “Freeway,” with the Movers doing what they do best; washing the crowd in psychedelic guitar play, feedback and hypnotic rhythms. They are truly one of the most reliable purveyors of modern psych on the scene. 

This excellent set gave us a first glimpse of some of the new material and the preview was mighty good. The new album is out May 17 on the always dependable Trouble In Mind records. NYC folks can also find the Movers as part of an excellent bill at The Broadway in Brooklyn on June 1. I expect, and hope, we will see move dates as the release gets closer. 

I recorded this from the usual spot at the soundboard with my MBHOs and excellent board feed from Tubby’s FOH engineer Will. Enjoy!

Here’s a tape courtesy of our buddy anazgnos, who hit up both nights of the L.A. California Flashback shows, put on by Black Editions to promote the latest volume of Tokyo Flashback. Headroom opened up night two with a burst of guitar pyrotechnics courtesy of Kryssi Battalene. In this context you can feel the connection between her distortion-drenched sound and the early wave of heavy Japanese psych like High Rise and Acid Mothers Temple.

Headroom have got a new EP out, New Heaven, in addition to a repressing (finally!) of Head in the Clouds, which disappeared rather quickly in its original release. Do pick up both those treasures, and enjoy some live Headroom too while you’re at it!

Headroom: December 9, 2018 Baby’s All Right

I keep thinking about headspace and headroom, in the context of Headroom, a band that opens both inward and outward. Kryssi Battalene splits her time churning out shoegazey riffs for the immeasurable Mountain Movers, Headroom being her side gig that distills her soloing into the main event. In 2017 she put out Head in the Clouds, a particularly spaced-out affair that’s as soaring in its scope as her other band. With Movers’ Rick Omonte on bass and Ross Menze on drums, Headroom doesn’t stray too far from the mold, blowing up new spaces to get lost in. Last month we finally got to see Headroom in action at Baby’s All Right, where the band played three tracks from Head in the Clouds, plus the new “Skyliner.” I don’t think I’m the only person in attendance who suggested Headroom visit us more often.

I recorded this set with a pair of MBHO omnidirectional mics onstage combined with a board feed from the Baby’s crew. The sound is outstanding. Enjoy!

Mountain Movers: July 28, 2018 Union Pool

So much goodness lately from Mountain Movers: the recently-released “New Jam” EP, the forthcoming LP Pink Skies on Trouble in Mind, this smoking set from their hot summertime Union Pool stop… When I saw the band back in June at Wonders of Nature, Dan promised that by their next visit they’d be a well-oiled machine. No kidding, this show is something like their 18th of a 17-day tour supporting Howlin’ Rain. Mountain Movers don’t so much find their groove here as dig deeper into one they’ve been excavating for a couple weeks. Wild.

Mountain Movers: June 10, 2018 Wonders of Nature

No longer just the home of white clam pizza, New Haven, Connecticut’s latest claim to fame is psych rock from the likes of Mountain Movers. The band’s latest self-titled slab is a dose of distorted guitars swirling around heavy grooves that, hey why not, probably go great with their hometown’s signature pie. Guitarist-singer Dan Greene has been at it for 10 years, but the current band with Rick Omonte on bass, Kryssi Battalene on lead guitar, and Ross Menze on drums have this thing really dialed-in. We caught the band a year ago at Union Pool and they’ve only gotten better since. This recording captures the band on the small stage at relatively new Brooklyn joint Wonders of Nature, opening for the heady Garcia Peoples. It features a couple tunes from that self-titled record plus a couple new ones, “Freeway” and the live staple “New Jam,” which is the subject of a forthcoming 12″ of the same title. Mountain Movers are currently touring with Howlin’ Rain and these are some absolute can’t-miss shows. In the NYC-area they’ve got Monty Hall on July 27 and Union Pool on July 28. We hope to see you there!
