Cold Cream: September 6, 2019 Three Lobed/WXDU Annual Ritual of Summoning (Raleigh, NC)

After watching three experimental/improv projects at the Three Lobed / WXDU Annual Ritual of Summoning, this spectacular day pivoted with a return to some straight-ahead punk. Cold Cream is a project from Triangle punk lifers from bands such as Flesh Wounds, Pipe, and Tegucigalpan, so despite their first record’s arrival in 2018, they own a room like the vets they are.

Here at Kings, Cold Cream energized the room with their erudite, politically-charged songs (not sure how many punk bands work “Dulce et decorum est / Pro patria mori” into their lyrics, but they do). Given the political climate in North Carolina, “Rat Fucker” (about gerrymandering and other forms of voter disenfranchisement) particularly resonated. But really, none of that would matter if the band didn’t, you know, rock, and that they most assuredly do. Tune in and turn this up loud.

I recorded this set in the same manner as the other sets of the day, with Schoeps mics onstage, MBHO mics at the board, and a soundboard feed. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Double Wig: September 6, 2019 Three Lobed / WXDU Annual Ritual of Summoning (Raleigh, NC)

October 10, 2019

Fresh off a longstanding stint as the bassist in Bardo Pond, Clint Takeda has emerged with a new solo project, Double Wig. This show at the annual Three Lobed / WXDU Annual Ritual of Summoning during Hopscotch was most folks’ first introduction to the project, and Clint made sure to keep us all enthralled with an improvisational piece powered by a number of effects that rendered the sound of Clint’s bass almost unrecognizable as one. These are still early days for Double Wig, with only a few performances or even mentions out there in the wild, so we are excited to see what Clint does with the project.

I recorded this set in the same manner as the other shows of the day, with Schoeps MK5c’s on stage, a soundboard feed, and MBHO mics and the Aerco preamp back at the board. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Bill Nace & Samara Lubelski: September 6, 2019 Three Lobed / WXDU Annual Ritual of Summoning (Raleigh, NC)

September 26, 2019

On the heels of a barnburning set by David Nance Group, Bill Nace and Samara Lubelski conjured up a different sort of vibe at the Three Lobed / WXDU Annual Ritual of Summoning at Kings.

Lubelski and Nace both have extensive musical histories as solo artists, improvisers and collaborators, including with members of Sonic Youth (Lubelski with Thurston Moore in, among other formats, Chelsea Light Moving; Nace most recently in Body/Head with Kim Gordon, but also with Moore and Lubelski). This format — in which the duo have released a self-titled album and recently toured the U.S. — finds Lubelski on violin and Nace on guitar/effects. It’s clear from the cohesiveness of this 28-minute piece that the pair have a natural interplay with each other, as they weave together a piece that you’ll find thought provoking no matter how you choose to interpret it.

I recorded this set primarily with a feed from the soundboard, with the Schoeps MK5 onstage mics providing additional atmosphere. Enjoy!

Daniel Bachman: August 19, 2018 Trans-Pecos

November 12, 2018
By

Daniel Bachman’s latest album, The Morning Star, opens with the side-long “Invocation” (wonderfully captured live at Hopscotch back in September) and weaves its way through two LPs worth of solo guitar, drones, field recordings, and found sounds. It’s an expansion of the palette he’s been mining since Orange County Serenade, but here Bachman’s style tips more towards ambient/drone music than he has in the past. However aside from that Hopscotch performance, Bachman is very much still doing solo guitar performances. This set recorded at Trans-Pecos back in August finds Bachman playing “Sycamore City,” “Song For the Setting Sun IV,” and “New Moon” from The Morning Star, plus “The Flower Tree” and “Wine and Peanuts” from his 2016 self-titled LP. He rounds out the originals with a few deep covers you may know: “Beautiful Eyes of Virgina” by Lemuel Turner, “Steamboat Gwine Round Da Bend” by John Fahey, and “Weary Lonesome Blues” by Roy Harvey and Leonard Copeland.

Long Hots: September 7, 2018 Three Lobed / WXDU Annual Ritual of Summoning (Raleigh, NC)

October 17, 2018

[Courtesy of Dave Schwentker]

I should possibly apologize to Rosali Middleman, one of the three Long Hots, for referring to her guitar playing as “feral” in last year’s review of this band’s Three Lobed / WXDU show, their third ever. If you’ve heard her other work, particularly her outstanding latest record Trouble Anyway, you wouldn’t necessarily know it was the same person as the one shredding on these scuzz-rock numbers. It was more a statement the style of her guitar playing for this band than the, you know, quality. But I digress. A year later, Long Hots continue to be one of Philadelphia’s best up and coming exports. The band’s gritty, garage-style approach recalls Philly brethren Spacin’ and Purling Hiss, and like those bands, the Long Hots can make it feel like a 3 a.m. rager in some hopped-up dirtball’s basement even if they’re actually playing a day show in a much-nicer-than-average local club. This five-song set almost doubled last year’s set in length and at least matched it in intensity, showing us new songs that (one day?) could fill out a full LP. As for now, Long Hots remain “Philadelphia’s most anticipated band” in that respect, as they continue to hone their live chops. You can catch another flavor of that on the band’s sole release, the Monday Night Raw cassette, which is exactly what it sounds like.

I recorded this set with a blend of onstage Schoeps microphones, a pair of mics in the audience, and a soundboard feed. It’s a fun recording. Enjoy!

Daniel Bachman Quartet: September 7, 2018 Three Lobed / WXDU Annual Rite of Summoning (Raleigh, NC)

September 18, 2018
By

The consistently positive reception for Daniel Bachman‘s latest record, The Morning Star, is an uplifting reminder that some people still listen with an open mind. The double LP, released this summer by Three Lobed Recordings, takes Bachman’s previous drone experiments — most recently suggested by the beginning of “Brightleaf Blues” on Bachman’s self-titled 2016 album, and extends it to the entire first side of the new record. The 18-minute ambient drone “Invocation” – that a casual fan might wonder if this is Daniel Bachman at all. “Invocation” is a vast and complex new work, blending field recordings, snippets of spoken word, a shruti box, and more. It’s a bold way to begin a record, and to capture the feeling of it full, read what Tiny Mix Tapes had to say.

One fact of a piece like “Invocation” is that it’s virtually impossible to create live in the settings where Bachman usually finds himself — that is, as a solo guitarist. So leave it to one of his favorite venues for experimentation – King’s in Raleigh, at a Three Lobed / WXDU event – for Bachman to find a path toward the album version, even if the result was entirely new. Joined by Forrest Marquise, Jim Becker and Jaime Fennelly, not to mention one of Marquise’s custom instruments and a mic’d, upside-down peanut jar with marbles on it, Bachman and his fellow players created a unique “Invocation” for what is always one of the year’s most exciting days of experimental music (christened this year as the “Annual Rite of Summoning.” This 38-minute organism of a song created a new place inside Kings’ four walls, a space to breathe, to reflect, to listen. A rite of summoning, indeed.

Please put on your headphones, and enjoy.

Bardo Pond: February 17, 2018 Union Pool

March 6, 2018
By

If Williamsburg venue Union Pool is better-known among the GenZ semi-grownups that populate the nabe’s bars these days, don’t tell the people who crowded the room for the Bardo Pond show on this snowy Saturday night — many of us grinning as the hookup-seeking set turned away from door not only by the “SOLD OUT” sign but also the deep noise emanating from behind it.

Bardo Pond is one of those bands that will always cast a deep but not wide net, nestling in the psyche of those able and open to embracing them. Their massive oeuvre — their latest and misleadingly titled Volume 8 is far from only their 8th record — attests to fans’ insatiable desire for what they’re into. Tonight’s set, short on number of songs but long on jams, was anchored by a sprawler from the new album, “And I Will” along with some recent tour favorites. The night capped with a longtime band classic, “Tommy Gun Angel,” putting an exclamation point on the idea that whatever other fleeting things might pass on that Saturday night in that room, this band always leaves echoes long after they’ve left the building.

I recorded this set with Lesley’s house PA feed together with Schoeps MK5 cardiod microphones. The sound is excellent. Enjoy!

Gunn-Truscinski Duo: January 9, 2018 Union Pool

Until the surprise announcement of Bay Head from Gunn-Truscinski Duo last year, it seemed like these guys may never put out another record together. Their last platter, Ocean Parkway, was released back in 2012 and besides a very special gig for the Three Lobed Sweet Sixteen, the pair had been awfully quiet for a long time. Fortunately for us Bay Head picks up right where they left off, proving that when Steve Gunn and John Truscinski get a room together, it’s a rare magic that results. And speaking of rare, the duo aren’t doing many shows together in support of the record, but we were lucky enough to capture this set from Union Pool last week. Old classics “Bahn Mi Ringtones” and “Ocean Parkway” brought back memories of Zebulon gigs past, while new songs “Sugar,” “Seagulls for Chuck Berry,” and “Gunter” were captivatingly fresh.

If you’re in LA, be sure to grab tickets for their show with Body/Head.

And if you’re in Brooklyn, Union Pool has another free show scheduled for this Tuesday, Jan. 16, with the inimitable Sir Richard Bishop headlining.

I recorded this from our usual spot with MBHOs combined with a board feed courtesy of FOH Doug. The sound is terrific. Enjoy!

Nathan Bowles Trio: September 8, 2017 Three Lobed / WXDU Hopscotch Afternoon Jamboree (Raleigh, NC)

October 16, 2017
By

It’s an article of faith that artists who are friends of Three Lobed Recordings always bring their best for the label’s annual Hopscotch day show showcase, co-sponsored with Durham’s WXDU. Nathan Bowles, a multi-year veteran of the event, outdid himself this year, choosing to use this platform to debut his new trio with Casey Toll on double bass and Rex McMurry on drums. Although this was the trio’s very first show, you wouldn’t necessarily have known it, as Bowles and the new band added new heft to what were originally his solo songs (“Blank Range”) as well as coming out strong with new ones (one untitled, one known as “Freshfaced”). Bowles’ current music has already redefined and expanded the notion of modern banjo music, but the trio promises to push things even further, offering the opportunity to head in directions he hasn’t yet contemplated in other groups in which he participates, such as the Black Twig Pickers. For one, these songs feel a bit more like rock songs, with McMurry’s drumming pushing a faster tempo and an overall heavier direction, particularly on the new song. “Freshfaced.” Seeing Nathan Bowles is always a treat — and it’s something we do as often as we can — and this trio only adds to the anticipation of what he’s up to next. Bowles has a few shows around the southern U.S. this month, so go have a listen if you can.

I recorded this set with Evan Lamb’s house mix, plus an additional soundboard feed of the banjo, together wtih Schoeps MK4V microphones onstage, and AKG 460 cardiod mics hung over the audience. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Long Hots: September 8, 2017 Three Lobed Records/WXDU Hopscotch Afternoon Jamboree (Raleigh, NC)

I can’t even give you a link to Long Hots on the Internet, because there ain’t one. But maybe you’ve heard of such bands as Rosali, Hothead, and Spacin‘. Ah, right, now you get the idea. So named for a kind of hot pepper, I assure that this band is prepared to bring the fire. My now-annual journey to the Three Lobed Recordings / WXDU Hopscotch Afternoon Jamboree is never complete without a total surprise, and seeing “Philadelphia’s most anticipated band” playing their third-ever show was certainly one of them. These women didn’t spend a long time onstage, but they used their fifteen minutes well, handing us two doses of feral guitar shredding and general disrespect for the integrity of our eardrums. This band played their fourth show, the following night, with Purling Hiss, so if you didn’t figure out the RIYL on this one, I can’t help you. Head over to bandcamp, throw these powerful women some love, and make sure some more Long Hots is in your future.

I recorded this set with a combination of onstage Schoeps MK4V microphones and several soundboard channels from house engineer Evan Lamb. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!
