Fiery Furnaces November 3, 2007 – Hiro Ballroom – Lossless Download

The Fiery Furnaces continue to invent new ways to entertain their fans. At the Hiro Ballroom last night, the final show on the US leg of their Widow City tour, the Furnaces added a written/call-out request segment to their show. Following a tight 45-minute set which began and ended with the new material, and contained a nice medley of Rehearsing My Choir material in the middle, Eleanor read from some notes passed up on stage (as their website suggested) and fielded shouted requests. The last 20 minutes of the performance featured some oldies, some false-starts, and much humor. The band continues their tour with a trip to Europe that begins on Tuesday, and goes throughout to the end of November.

My recording of this concert was a bit of an ordeal. I arrived very early, with plans to record one of the opening acts on the bill, Pit Er Pat. However, after nearly completing the set-up of the Neumann rig, I discovered that my fully-charged lithium battery (that powers the entire rig), had completely died. I broke down the rig, left the venue, and took the L train all the way home again. I retrieved my DPA rig, returned to the venue, and arrived in time to record the Furnaces.

The Hiro Ballroom is a neat little venue with an excellent sound system. I positioned myself in the back section of the floor, in the center of the stacks, and recorded a fine stereo mix. Enjoy!

Is there something wrong in the Whistle Rhapsody file? I’ve tried two different programs to convert to MP3 and that’s the only file that doesn’t work.

thanks for all the shows and recording

Ack! I’m sorry but that track did not fully upload. That’ll teach me to do my server uploads at 5 am! It will be up completely in the next 5 minutes.

Thank you so much ! Unfortunately, I have a very slow connection at work and haven’t been able to dowload this show yet, but I’m sure I will enjoy it remendously. Can’t wait to see FF in Paris (where I live) next week. Thanks for of Montreal as well, another one of my favorite bands of the millenium (and I know they love FF as well, as they cover Tropical Ice-Land sometimes).

Cologne set last night was awesome & Jason Loewenstein (bass) is my hero :)
Only bummer for me was that the left channel of my mic died, which I (fortunately) noticed seconds before the show started so I could readjust my gear and get a decent mono recording nevertheless.

just got into these guys (thanks to a review of “widow city” on NPR’s “fresh air”); missed them when they came through charlotte over the summer so i will have to enjoy this show hoping that they make it through here again. BTW, your site is awesome!

have successfully downloaded the whole show -now that i have the hang of “down them all”-but my flac reader says that all the files have errors and now i can’t convert them to wav. in case you’re wondering i use the flac frontend software.
    please help!

My best guess is that you didn’t let the files download completely in Down Them All. The program has the annoying feature of starting but not completely downloading each song, and then starting other downloads. Depending upon your bandwidth, you should be able to just start the program, and come back to it 30 minutes later to see it all done.
There’s also the md5 file verification available. Google md5 and then use the file I’ve made available.
    Hope this helps.
