YLT Night 3

While Hanukkah at Maxwell’s is a long-time Yo La Tengo tradition, another of the band’s regular gigs is the WFMU Marathon where YLT plays requests which are invariably eclectic covers. While Night 3 of this year’s Hanukkah was a tremendous show for a variety of reasons, it was one cover that stole the show. This night will forever be known as the “Sister Ray” show. I asked YLT’s long-time superb FOH Mark if he’d ever seen them play the song — they have done a ton of VU covers over the years — and he only remembered one other performance of “Sister Ray”. Perhaps fueled by the guest performances of various members of the Feelies, the band’s set was a scortcher from the get-go. On any other night, the band’s new cover of Neil Young’s “Time Fades Away” would have been the story, it was the night’s last song where the magic reached its peak. This wasn’t a simple walk through one of the Velvet Underground’s most compelling songs, it was a full-on seventeen-minute immersion into the song. Glenn Mercer and Bill Million joined and the noisy axe trio with Ira was a breathtaking display of authentic garage style guitar.

I recorded this show in the same manner at the other nights and the sound is superb. Enjoy!

These are killer setlists and the band hardly repeats a song from the previous nights. It will take time to digest the shows but many thanks for sharing these recordings.

Thanks for getting these great YLT shows out so quickly.

2 questions about tonights show :-

Which charity was this show in aid of?

Will you be posting the Feelies set?

and one question about last years Hanukkah – will you be uploading the Trypes set?

    Thanks again.

    jb-

I recorded the Trypes set last year. Whether that and The Feelies were going to get posted was up to Glenn Mercer. In the past, the Feelies have allowed us to post recordings, but in certain instances that attitude has changed lately. The Trypes is one that they do not want posted. As to their most recent set, Dan will have to confirm, but my suspicion is no.

    Thanks for letting me know.

I remembered last year you were waiting for approval. Sorry they said no – its not as if its going to hit their record sales.

What are the chances of a European tour!

Thanks! Too bad the Feelies aren’t as into letting their shows be posted here, but you guys have gotten plenty of great shows of theirs already. And Feelies setlists are generally pretty static.

Thank you so much for these awesome recordings. Night 2 is especially great. I am definitely going to donate to your site, and I already spend way too much on YLT, but I will of course be getting the new album on vinyl at my local record store the day it comes out.

As always, thanks so much for taping and sharing these shows. For those of us on the West Coast who are treated to a YLT tour every year or tour but don’t get to partake of the Hanukkah gigs, this is a lifeline of sorts. I share the sentiments above that it would be nice if the Feelies would let their set be shared — since in their reformed incarnation they never leave the Tri-State Area, we Californians are left begging for crumbs.

As always, thanks so much for taping and sharing these shows. For those of us on the West Coast who religiously see YLT every year or two when their tour takes them out here, but never get a chance to see a Hanukkah gig, this is the next best thing to being there. I echo the sentiments above that it would be nice if the Feelies would similarly authorize their shows to be shared (especially since the reformed band has yet to make their way west so we’re particularly deprived of the real thing!).

Pretty sure I saw you guys taping on Friday. Any chance you were able to tape the Titus set. I thought they were terrific.

Yes, Titus was recorded. I spoke to the band before the show and they said they’d be OK with being on the site, so I should post that some time before the end of the year (for obvious reasons, the YLT sets are the first priority).

As a member of The Trypes, I’d sure love to hear last year’s show. Did someone specifically deny permission to post?
