Radiohead – In Rainbows Preview – Bonus Lossless Download June 14, 2006

Radiohead. Somehow you knew it had to be them. The band to ultimately drive the last nail into the coffin of the old-model record companies. The brilliant simplicity of the promotion model for In Rainbows is something to behold. The user can buy the digital download for any price the user believes to be appropriate. I decided to order last night, and paid what amounted to $11 US. There is also a deluxe box set with extra songs, a double vinyl disc, a book, eight bonus tracks and two CDs which requires purchase and will be delivered in December.

Oh yes, and there is no record company or any other entity involved in the download. Its Radiohead and us. The ramifications of this grand experiment are huge. Here at nyctaper, we believe that Radiohead’s model represents a validation of the mission of this site–free downloads as a means to promote a positive relationship directly between artists and fans. A new paradigm indeed.

Bob Lefsetz blog contains an excellent discussion of In Rainbows.

The download will be available on October 10. Pre-Order In Rainbows here.

In 2006, Radiohead toured and performed several songs that will appear on In Rainbows. I recorded one of the Theatre at Madison Square Garden shows. This is a nice clear recording, and is the last recording I made with my old condenser microphones before upgrading the Neumann rig and the DPA rig. Enjoy!

What format will Radiohead make available for the download? I ordered the box..82 bucks…Great job by a great band. Hope the “number” of downloads sends record companies onto the ledge

    1. Nyctaper, thank you for this! I was at this show and it was *awesome.* (Thanks for all your other recordings too.)

    2. My site TheMusic.FM is throwing a party (part listening party) tomorrow (Wed 10/10) downstairs at The Annex to celebrate the release of In Rainbows. It’s free with RSVP. Please check out the info & rsvp here: http://going.com/InRainbows.

    Thanks

The band’s merchandise arm W.A.S.T.E. announced today that the download is a 48.4 MB zip file. Any Radiohead-fan mathematicians in the house want to take a guess at an MP3 bitrate?

Also, I was at both Theater shows last year & this one was superior — just an awesome performance. Thanks, nyctaper.

Btw, I think my last comment was blocked due to use of 2 URLs? Check out my unofficial Radiohead release party if interested @ going.com/InRainbows

Here’s the answer from a MusicWeek interview with the band’s managers Chris Hufford and Bryce Edge:

“As many as 50 percent of fans are choosing to pay something for the download, which will comprise a DRM-free 160kb version of the album.”

Here’s a scan of the first page of the article.

Just wanted to say thanks for this excellent recording. I downloaded it to get a flavour of recent Radiohead output and you’ve done a brilliant job of capturing them live here. I’ve downloaded a couple of other shows from your site and see you’re take donations but is there any other way than PayPal to do this?

    Cheers

  7. October 10, 2007 at 7:31 am

Yes, you can buy me a Neil Young ticket ;p

Seriously, the only means by which to donate is by Paypal. I had a grand total of two $5 donations in September, so maybe I need to come up with some other option. Bleeding money is starting to become old very quickly.

CAN NOT FIND THIS SHOW ‘OUT THERE’ ON THE WEB … NO ONE HAS A COPY OR CAN EMAIL ME THE FILES … WHAT’S THE POINT OF ARCHIVES IF YOU CAN NOT ACCESS? nycTAPER DOESNT KEEP COPIES FOR THEIR OWN COLLECTION THAT CAN BE RELOADED???

any hints on how to obtain?

  17. March 1, 2014 at 1:10 pm

That’s funny. We have archived over 1200 shows here, some for as long as seven years. This recording and a handful of other are not archived for a variety of reasons — mostly permission issues and sound quality issues. In this situation, there is a FAR superior recording of this show done by Scott Brown. I would suggest seeking out that recording. Best place to find anything Radiohead related is the Radiohead DC++ hub. http://radiohub.wikidot.com/
