If there’s a band we hope that people associate with what nyctaper stands for, its Wilco. They have appeared so many times on this site that its often difficult to invent new superlatives to describe the Wilco concert experience. Last night at Summerstage, the band again delivered to its fans another epic NYC show, on par with the legendary Irving Plaza or Hammerstein or McCarren Pool shows of previous years. On tour in support of their latest release, The Whole Love (due on September 27), the band again delivered a two-plus hour high-energy set that dug deep into their catalog (an A.M. cut streaming below) while it also featured eight songs from the new album. The title track has already earned encore status, and we’re streaming it below. Of special note was Jeff Tweedy’s remembrance of the Wilco sets at Town Hall almost exactly ten years to the day, when a still-shocked NYC found some comfort in superbly delivered and heartfelt two nights of music. Ten years later, Wilco is still providing the City with the same gifts.

The entire NYCTaper crew was on hand to record this set. While we feared the worst of the elements, fortunately the rain held off and the winds were minimal. We set up near the back of the floor because our original advantageous position was actually an obstruction to the lighting projections. The crew ran 3 separate rigs, featuring twelve high-end microphones. This particular recording is my standard Neumann + DPA 4021 rig, and its a surprisingly excellent recording, all things considered. We will likely feature some of the other captures in the coming weeks. Enjoy!

    Hi Dan:

Well done – your recording sound terrific, to judge from the samples. Setlist is similar to (although longer than) the Wang Theatre show they played two days earlier, which I heard. I thought the new stuff sounded terrific. Are you guys thinking of doing a matrix?

One minor typo: I think you want “2011-09-23” instead of 2010.

Again, thanks and great job. Can’t wait to hear Night 2.

    David

Amazing, thank you SO much! I think I saw you guys set up back there. Pretty intense rig. Are we to assume this is the best capture of the ones you got? I know it’s a matter of opinion and all that, but I trust your experienced ears. Just want to make sure I’m listening to the top version when I go back in the months to come.

Thanks again Dan for providing this. It was a pleasure discussing the Dean G500 show also. It’s still one of my favorites and up there with your recording of SY in Williamsburg. Maybe we’ll catch you at the Lemonheads. Keep up the splendid work. It’s a treat to get to a show and see you setting up knowing that there’s a great recording to follow..

Honestly, you could record Wilco’s entire tour and I would still download and listen to them all. This bands simply one of the best if not the best live bands out there today. Nels Cline in particular, is an absolutely sick guitarist. And as always, the recording itself was terrific.

    Thank you so much.

Thanks Dan, as always, for capturing these beautiful shows in such high quality for all of us to hear. Your consistent Wilco taping probably helped me become the Wilco fan that i am now, haha

Did you manage to capture either of Nick Lowe’s sets?

As great as Wilco was on Friday night –and they never disappoint, the highlight of the evening for me was getting to meet NYCTaper and his crew right after the show and getting a chance to thank them for all of their hard work… In the digital age of music, our heroes should not only be the musicians who make the music but the people who give their time and effort to allow us to hear the artists we love and introduce us to the artists that we will grow to love. NYCTaper, AcidJack and the rest of the crew are not only rock stars of the highest order, they couldn’t possibly be nicer more gracious people. As I went over to thank them, they couldn’t stop thanking me for coming over to acknowledge their efforts.

BTW, the show sounds great, rain and all … Thanks again guys… You never disappoint either…

Thanks for the download!! The mix of classics and new stuff made for a great show. However, the rain and the puddles made for soggy feet. I made it through the whole thing standing on a bit of dry ground the size of a slice of pizza! Cheers!
