We are old enough to remember when “Whip It” was a hit, and certainly remember the sheer joy hearing “Genius of Love” for the first time. We first witnessed the Tom Tom Club live during their mini-set in the middle of the Talking Heads 1983 show at Forest Hills Tennis Stadium.  So it was a real exciting surprise to see the listing for Devo and Tom Tom Club performing together at the McCarren Pool. The concert is this Thursday June 26, and we will be there, having purchased a ticket months ago.

Devo has permitted the free share of unofficial live recordings at their site for quite some time. The excellent Booji Boy site organizes the free trading among the fans, and provides a wealth of information about Devo live recordings. However, today we were doubly excited to receive an email directly from Chris Frantz that will permit our recording of the Tom Tom Club set. Thanks, Chris!

There are still tickets available for this show, which can be purchased through the Devo site [HERE].

Sharon Van Etten – New Dates and a New Song

June 23, 2008
By

As we decided to stay for the evening session of the After The Jump Fest, we missed Sharon Van Etten‘s performance at the Rooftop Films Concert on Saturday night. The good news is that we learned that Sharon has added two more NYC dates, including a Summer Party show at “42 Jefferson”. Google maps tells us that this location is about a block away from the Market Hotel.

The two more accessible dates to see Sharon Van Etten live are:
June 25 Zebulon 9pm
Aug 3 Cake Shop

Next weekend, Sharon begins a July tour of the East Coast with Noa Babayof, and then an August tour in the Midwest. See the MySpace page for tour details.

And finally, Sharon’s new CD will be entitled “Because I Was in Love” and will be released in the next couple of months. Today she is streaming a new song (“Strong”) on her MySpace music player.

Deer Tick June 20, 2008 Rooftop Films – Flac and MP3 Downloads

I did not recognize John McCauley standing by the soundboard booth as I set up to record the Deer Tick performance at tonight’s Rooftop Films concert. He has shaved his mustache and looks younger — a reminder that this enormously talented and poised performer with the world-weary voice is merely twenty-four years old. On the roof, Deer Tick performed the standard 30-minute pre-film set. Despite the inattentive movie crowd John managed to pull in quite a few of the restless throng with the opening Faron Young cover, the Deer Tick “MySpace hit” (“Art Isn’t Real”), and a strong “Baltimore Blues” closer.

We recorded from 10 feet in front of the PA and as a result there is no crowd noise or wind on this recording. The basic sound system has some over-modulated vocals, but overall we are extremely happy with this recording. Enjoy!

Marco Benevento Trio at Le Poisson Rouge June 24

June 20, 2008
By

The Marco Benevento Trio will perform at the newly opened venue Le Poisson Rouge on Tuesday June 24th as part of the JVC Jazz Fest. When we saw the final night of Marco’s residency at Sullivan Hall in January, the trio that performed eventually went on the road for several dates. That group included Andrew Barr on drums, and the amazing Reed Mathis on Bass. Unfortunately, this version of the group will not include Reed, as he will be on tour with Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey (in Cleveland that night).

Le Poisson Rouge is the new venue on the same location (Sullivan & Bleeker) as the legendary Village Gate, and which has received the blessing of Gate owner Art D’Lugoff. One of the proprietors of LPR is Ronen Givony, whose work with the brilliant Wordless Music Series has been renowned.

While we will miss Reed Mathis on Tuesday, we will in fact see Jacob Fred tonight at Sullivan Hall for the midnight show!

Oh! Custer June 12, 2008 Cake Shop – Flac and MP3 Downloads

Oh! Custer is one of those rare bands who immediately caught our ear when we first heard them in a promotional email. Their CDs are released in the US through an independent label called Series Two Records. When we learned that Oh! Custer would play the NYC Popfest, we reached out to Series Two and the Popfest and received permission to record the performance.

The duo play a unique lo-fi guitar-oriented Swedish pop with Josef providing melodic electric guitar lines to Esbjörn’s vocals and rhythm guitar, and backed by laptop beats and ambient sounds. As the middle band in a 5-band bill on the opening night of the NYC Popfest, Oh! Custer had the unenviable task of keeping the momentum. With a persistent beat, strong songs and funny/friendly banter, Oh! Custer kept the crowd into the show and earned some new fans.

We recorded from the identical location as the Love Is All recording from later in the evening, but during Oh! Custer we moved the microphones to avoid the draft from the air conditioning duct. There is a some rumble from the air in the first 3 songs, but that is greatly decreased when the mics were moved. Enjoy!

Antietam May 31, 2008 Brooklyn Public Library – Flac and MP3 Downloads

As we reported a couple of weeks ago, on May 31 Antietam played in a library with a special guest and a setlist organized by the Dewey Decimal System. Our intrepid nyctaper correspondent Neil d was there to witness the event and recorded it for the site. As we learned that night, due to thunderstorms the show was moved inside at the last moment, and the bands (Ladybug Transistor opened) performed in the Brooklyn Public Library‘s new auditorium.

The multi-generational and multi-ethnic crowd witnessed the “expanded five-piece Antietam,” with Josh Clark on second guitar and Ira Kaplan on keyboards. Guests also included Mark Howell on trumpet and Ladybug bassist Julia Rydholm on violin. The unique setlist idea featured a sketch pad mounted on the stage that included the name of each song, where to find its topic in the Dewey Decimal System, and a couple of Brooklyn neighborhoods for which each song was dedicated.

Neil recorded from upfront with a stereo Griffin I-Talk microphone into an I-Pod at lossless 16-bit. The quality of this recording is surprisingly good considering the basic nature of the equipment and the acoustics of a library auditorium not built for post-punk rock music. Enjoy!
