Dead Stars: July 10, 2015 Rough Trade – Flac/MP3/Streaming

A few months ago, Dead Stars self-released their new single “Calm Punk” to universal praise from some high profile media outlets including Noisey, CMJ, Diffuser and others. It was nice to see this excellent band and trio of good guys finally get some love — we have been onto them for a few years now. They played our CMJ show two years ago and also a criminally under-attended show we put on at Cameo Gallery a few months after that. But truth be told, we had not seen Dead Stars live in over a year and welcomed the chance Friday last at Rough Trade. Although the band was in a supporting slot, the crowd involvement was exceptional — we’d guess a large portion of the audience was actually there to see them. The result was a high energy forty-five minute set of Dead Stars’ 90’s influenced guitar god rock, which also included some fun banter and crowd interaction. We are streaming this set’s performance of “Calm Punk” below. Dead Stars play Rough Trade again on August 1, opening for Lazyeyes.

I recorded this set with the Schoeps cards mounted inside of the soundboard booth and mixed with an excellent feed provided by house FOH Dustin. The sound quality is superb. Enjoy!

Dead Stars: May 6, 2014 Cameo Gallery + October 17, 2013 Cake Shop – Flac/MP3/Streaming

Dead Stars is one of those bands for whom you naturally root. They make excellent music that lacks any posing or pretentiousness, they are superb musicians, and the trio are generally all around good guys. This is the kind of band that you want to hang out with after the show. And thankfully we’ve been able to do that twice, last October at our annual CMJ Day Party at Cake Shop and earlier this month at a show we presented at Cameo Gallery. In the interim months between these two shows, Dead Stars signed with Old Flame Records who will release their new album Slumber, due out on June 17. The recordings of these two shows feature what amounts to most of the new album in a live format. Speaking of which, Dead Stars will play the CD release show for Slumber at Union Pool on June 19. Thereafter, the band heads out on a two week tour through the East coast and Midwest.

I recorded the Cameo show with the Sennheisers mounted high in front of the soundboard and mixed with a fine feed. The Cake Shop show was recorded with the Sennheisers mounted on the low ceiling in front of the stage and again mixed with a board feed. Cameo is deeper and richer sounding, but has some boominess, while Cake Shop is very upfront but perhaps a little thinner than Cameo. Both are excellent recordings in their own right. Enjoy!

Tonight! NYCTaper Presents at Cameo Gallery: The Loom, Dead Stars, Whiskey Bitches, Ghost Punch

We are happy to present a terrific bill of four bands tonight at Cameo Gallery. The Loom are very familiar to readers of this site, as they’ve played NYCTaper Presents shows four times and we’ve recorded them countless other times. Our newer friends Dead Stars played our CMJ show in October, and I’m streaming a track from that show below. Whiskey Bitches very recently played our killer show at Death By Audio last month. Ghost Punch is the show’s opener and although we’ve never hosted them before, we expect they’ll become site regulars like the others.

Dead Stars: September 28, 2013 Glasslands – Flac/MP3/Streaming

Dead Stars are one of those Brooklyn bands that have been on my radar and whose recorded output has impressed, but I’ve never actually seen live. That changed at Glasslands on Wednesday last, and Dead Stars did not disappoint. In a short and tight opening set, the band played all three songs from I Get By their 2012 EP (we’re streaming one below), a couple of songs from their recent EP High Gain (Uninhabitable Mansions), and a couple of new songs. The live Dead Stars sounds quite like Dinosaur Jr., which is certainly a good thing, and overall has a solid 90s-influenced sound. We talked to the guys briefly after the show out near their crazy tour van, and its clear that not only are these guys good, but they really like what they’re doing. That’s refreshing and welcome.

I recorded this set with our installed rig and the sound is superb. Enjoy!
