Eugene Chadbourne: April 25, 2017 Union Pool

May 17, 2017
By

Eugene Chadbourne—Doc Chad for the familiar—is likely the only musician living who could (would?) play you a Woody Guthrie song on the banjo and also destroy your eardrums with the electric rake. With literally zillions of releases over the last forty years, he’s done folk, jazz, rock, noise, and everything in between. In fact, it’s those in betweens where Doc Chad spends most of his time, never stagnating on one genre, one band, one collaborator, or even one instrument—as if any of those things could claim to define his music. Yes, Doc Chad is a national treasure.

This set from Union Pool a few weeks back has got all the goods: covers of Guthrie and Beefheart, an ode to Conway Twitty, a medly of Johnny Paycheck tunes, and some Chadbourne originals. No electric rake, but you can’t have everything can you?

I recorded this from our usual location at Union Pool with a board feed courtesy of our bud Doug. The sound is excellent. Enjoy!

Meat Puppets: May 10, 2017 Brooklyn Bowl

May 15, 2017

Thirty-five years ago when the Meat Puppets released their first album they were the punk band that was also into the Grateful Dead. To save you from doing the math, that was wayyyyyy before it was cool to like both punk rock and the Dead. That’s all to say the Meat Puppets have always been ahead of their time. And they’ve seen it all: SST in the early eighties when it was the independent record label; performing their songs on perhaps the most beloved MTV Unplugged of all time; a massive hit song with “Backwater” and the Gold Record to match. But there’s no better testament to their lasting vitality than a packed Brooklyn Bowl for a Wednesday night show. Dig the fiery “Touchdown King” and a sixteen-minute “Up on the Sun” and you’ll see what I mean.

The Tour Tour Two with Mike Watt continues. Check here for dates.

I recorded this from the right side of the room with the AKG’s flown high. The sound is excellent. Enjoy!

Mike Watt + The Jom and Terry Show: May 10, 2017 Brooklyn Bowl

May 14, 2017

It’s an absolute shame it took me this long to see Mike Watt live. I recall as a teenager hearing about the epic Watt/Foo Fighters/Hovercraft tour of 1995—recently documented on Ring Spiel Tour ’95—and not quite knowing who this guy was except for “Against the 70s.” A few years later I would learn of the Minutemen and fIREHOSE, but still it never seemed to work out to catch Watt live. Last week I rectified that in the best way possible. Watt has been playing off and on with Tom Watson (guitar) and Jerry Trebotic (drums) since 2001 and they’ve got the whole spiel down pat. Twenty-seven songs in under an hour with a whole bunch of Minutemen favorites thrown in—pure joy.

The Tour Tour Two with the Meat Puppets continues. Check here for dates.

Jackie Lynn: April 27, 2017 Rough Trade NYC

May 11, 2017
By

On the run from the law and those outside it, Jackie Lynn nevertheless found her way to do some touring behind last year’s self-titled Thrill Jockey record. Jackie’s tale of crime, love, escape, and revenge is painted across eight tracks with synths, electronic drum tracks, twelve-string acoustic guitar, and an unmistakeable voice. The entirety of the album is performed live. Come for the thrills of “Alien Love” and “Franlkin, TN” —stay for Jackie’s catharsis (and redemption?) in “Jackie.”

I recorded this from the soundboard cage with the AKG’s set up in DIN stereo configuration, combined with a board feed courtesy of FOH Terry Mattson. The sound is terrific. Enjoy!

Mind Over Mirrors: May 4, 2017 Union Pool

May 10, 2017
By

Mind Over Mirrors contains multitudes. We’ve seen Jaime Fennelly’s Indian pedal harmonium-based project evolve over the past few years, from a 2015 set at Union Pool with Haley Fohr for The Voice Calling, to a solo set at Littlefield last year, and now a dramatic full-band celebration of the Mirrors’ Paradise of Bachelors debut, Undying Color. Squeezing themselves onto Union Pool’s modestly-sized stage, Fennelly and crew performed a few tracks off Undying Color, vividly recreating the album’s complexity live, while adding an untitled synth piece and the self-explanatory “Gongs.” For the record, that’s Janet Beveridge Bean on drums, gong, and vocals; Jim Becker on violin, vocals, and percussion, and Jon Mueller also on drums and gong. While you may be wondering where Mind Over Mirrors will go next, Fennelly already has an answer for you: this lineup has just announced a two-night performance of a new piece titled “Bellowing Sun” at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago for next April. In the meantime, Undying Color is one of the most compelling albums released this year and this live set will make a nice companion to it.

I recorded this from our usual outpost at Union Pool, combined with a board feed courtesy of the venue’s FOH, Doug, and touring engineer, Nick. This represents one of our finest pulls from Union Pool. Enjoy!

Brokeback: May 4, 2017 Union Pool

May 9, 2017
By

It doesn’t take too much digging to trace the cartography of Americana in Brokeback or their new album, Illinois River Valley Blues. For it’s in Illinois that Doug McCombs finds a microcosm of the American west and there the influence of the Spanish countryside. Outside Murphysboro, IL is home to the Little Grand Canyon; meanwhile, “Andalusia, IL,” the song, would clearly have you recall both the south of Spain and its like-named Illinois counterpart. Within the songs, the map gets folded in ways that bring the two Grand Canyons together, that position Andalusia, IL somewhere in the Spanish region. Roads are traced on guitar strings; routes and motifs are circuitous and repeating. Brokeback always take the back roads.

I recorded this from our usual outpost at Union Pool, combined with a board feed courtesy of the venue’s FOH, Doug, and touring engineer, Nick. The sound is excellent. Enjoy!

Brokeback continue their tour with a Chicago gig later this month and then off to the west coast. Check tour dates via Thrill Jockey.

Moon Duo: April 27, 2017 Rough Trade NYC

May 7, 2017
By

If psychedelic music aims to be transportive, then Moon Duo’s destination looks something like a Village nightclub featuring the Exploding Plastic Inevitable. Sanae Yamada’s synths swirl together with Riply Johnson’s guitar while drummer John Jeffrey plays with motorik precision. Hypnotic visuals play a game of hiding and showing the musicians. Moon Duo play songs for the dark and urban, and naming their recent two-volume album Occult Architecture underscores the time and place of their music. Song titles like “The Death Set,” “Creepin’,” and “Cult of Moloch” tell you this setting shouldn’t be comforting. Capping off the set is a cover of those most-sinister Stooges: “No Fun” gets washed in synth flourishes while Johnson does his best Iggy. The psychedelic sixties are here.

I recorded this from the soundboard cage with the AKG’s set up in DIN stereo configuration, combined with a board feed courtesy of FOH Terry Mattson and Moon Duo’s touring engineer. The sound is spectacular. Enjoy!

Moon Duo will be back on May 20th to celebrate Sacred Bones’ 10 Anniversary at Greenpoint Terminal Warehouse.

Acid Mothers Temple: April 22, 2017 Knitting Factory

April 27, 2017
By

It’s April and that means cosmic travelers Acid Mothers Temple have reappeared in our North American dimension for their yearly psych ritual, this one dubbed the Hallelujah Mystic tour. Kawabata & co. are awfully prolific so for those of us who might have lost track of their recorded freakouts, these outings make for a nice catchup. This set from the Knitting Factory captures some old favorites like “Pink Lady Lemonade” and “Cometary Orbital Drive,” plus a couple more recent additions like the band’s extended takes on Black Sabbath’s “The Wizard” and Gong’s “Flying Teapot.”

I recorded this from our usual location at Knitting Factory, to the right of the soundboard. The sound is excellent. Enjoy!

The Hallelujah Mystic Tour 2017 continues in this and other dimensions! Check here for the remaining dates.

Pile: April 7, 2017 Sunnyvale

April 10, 2017
By

“Thank God for Pile”—if you listen closely, you’ll hear one zealous audience member with an enthusiasm you don’t often see for such a young band. But people really love Pile—and everyone in-the-know knows Pile are damn great. Their comparatively small but dedicated following gets bigger with each album and I daresay if you missed out on Pile this time around, I’m afraid you’ve missed the last of their shows in a small room.

On Friday, we squeezed ourselves into a packed Sunnyvale for the band’s second of two sold-out Brooklyn shows (the first was at Baby’s All Right). The thing about bands on Exploding in Sound Records is that where there’s one there’s bound to be more. Pile headlined a stacked bill featuring some current and future EIS greats: Gnarwhal, Big Ups, and Stove. Their set gets cut a bit short due to time constraints, but that only served to increase the intensity as their finale of “Rock and Roll Forever With the Customer in Mind” will attest. That tune is from 2015’s You’re Better Than This, while the rest of the set is comprised of songs off their latest album, A Hairshirt of Purpose, and their first EIS record, Dripping. Whether you’re new to the band or a longtime fan, listen to this cracking performance and be thankful for Pile.

Pile is touring the U.S. and Europe through June. Check dates here and go see Pile!

Acidjack and I recorded this from our usual location at Sunnyvale right up at the stage lip, plus a board feed from Sunnyvale’s engineer Dave. The sound is excellent. Enjoy!
