Sloppy Heads: January 25, 2017 Union Pool

February 28, 2017
By

It might seem to be a self-deprecating band name, but Sloppy Heads gets you pretty close to what this band is about, if you focus a bit more on the heads part of the equation. Theirs is a group of record geeks’ loose-limbed expression of their influences that will attract like-minded music lovers with its unpredictable shifts in style and ability to have fun. After a string of 7″ and CDR releases, the band came to Union Pool to celebrate the release of their first full-length, Useless Smile, an album that is the fullest expression yet of their engaging, unselfconscious sound that draws on strains of garage rock, lo-fi, new wave, noise, and psychedelia. The Heads are a band with a lot of friends (James McNew of Yo La Tengo/Dump both opened the show and played on the album), and the combination of this music and crowd gave this show the vibe of a gathering in a cool kid’s basement in high school, with a better band and a more mature crowd (and band). Sloppy Heads gave us an hour-plus mixed with engaging tunes, good humor, and some quality jamming, most evidently as “I’ll Take My Chances” flowed into the uptempo “Love Is A Disease.” The energy climaxed with the frenetic “Resistance, Baby,” but the more thoughtful “Always Running” (the first song released from Useless Smile) was also a highlight. The Heads join Lambchop at the Bowery Ballroom on March 30, so make a date to hang with them soon.

I recorded this set with a soundboard feed from Union Pool engineer Robert, together with Schoeps MK5c microphones. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Yo La Tengo: December 15, 2013 Bell House – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

Yo La Tengo are such an embarrassment of riches, it is hard to know where to begin, or what to be said that hasn’t been said in our many reviews of them before. As we reached the penultimate night of the band’s four-night stand at Bell House, we had already seen four sets, two encores and over five hours of their music. But that much Yo La Tengo doesn’t get old. There’s always some new trick up their collective sleeve, or something old that they supercharge with added emotion, a new arrangement, or just a flat-out great performance.

For me, on this night, it was the electric-set closer “I Heard You Looking”. The electric set always closes out with one of their guitar freakout sprawlers, and this was the one I most wanted to hear. The version at last year’s Hanukkah show had been outstanding, to the point that I thought it might be impossible to top, but the level of intensity displayed by Ira, writhing as he wrung noise out of his guitar at the peak of the number, might have done it. The wordless song speaks volumes, from its wistful opening chords to the climax that expands in all directions. It never ceases to be a thing of beauty, but this version stood out even still.

We didn’t get any special guests on this snowy Sunday night, save all-purpose band associate Joe Puleo joining on “I Heard You Looking”, but for the encore, in addition to “Moby Octopad”, we got three covers that have only been brought out a few times on this tour. The three songs — the Who’s “Disguises”, the Only One’s “The Whole of the Law” and Sun Ra’s “Somebody’s In Love” — provided a neat survey of the band’s eclecticism. With one night left to close out 2013, we couldn’t wait to see what came next. Stay tuned.

I recorded this set with a soundboard feed provided by longtime engineer Mark Luecke, plus Schoeps MK4V cardiod microphones. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

A couple of years ago, Jesse Jarnow wrote a piece in the Village Voice about NYCTaper. Although I’m obviously not completely unbiased about the writer, I felt it was not a puff piece, and I am certain that it was a well researched and thorough article on the culture of taping and the modern wrinkle that nyctaper represents. So it was a nice bit of news we got last year when we learned that Jesse received a book deal with Penguin Books to write the definitive biography of Yo La Tengo. His research and writing strengths aside, Jesse also happened to be one of the foremost experts in the details of the music of YLT — his yearly annotated Hanukkah setlists have been a great assistance in the compiling of our recordings. Given that Jesse’s book Big Day Coming: Yo La Tengo and the Rise of Indie Rock is due for release this coming June, it was a bittersweet coincidence that this year’s Hanukkah shows have been, in large part because of the Ira’s recent health scare, thoroughly historical retrospective shows. The yearly December shows have always had their fair share of rare numbers, but this year has been special. YLT has broken out multiple songs we’ve never seen before. The guests have included original bassist Dave Rick, and on this Night 7, the incomparable Dave Schramm played the entire set. Dave was an integral part of the development of the band in the early years of Yo La Tengo, and his distinctively sweet guitar tone was the highlight of evening. We are streaming the show’s climax, YLT’s 1987 semi-obscure single “Asparagus Song”. The irony of course is that this show was one of the few over the last several years that Jesse actually missed. Hopefully, this recording can be a partial substitute.

I recorded this show in the same manner as the two previous YLT posts, and the sound quality is superb. Enjoy!
