Daniel Bachman: August 19, 2018 Trans-Pecos

November 12, 2018
By

Daniel Bachman’s latest album, The Morning Star, opens with the side-long “Invocation” (wonderfully captured live at Hopscotch back in September) and weaves its way through two LPs worth of solo guitar, drones, field recordings, and found sounds. It’s an expansion of the palette he’s been mining since Orange County Serenade, but here Bachman’s style tips more towards ambient/drone music than he has in the past. However aside from that Hopscotch performance, Bachman is very much still doing solo guitar performances. This set recorded at Trans-Pecos back in August finds Bachman playing “Sycamore City,” “Song For the Setting Sun IV,” and “New Moon” from The Morning Star, plus “The Flower Tree” and “Wine and Peanuts” from his 2016 self-titled LP. He rounds out the originals with a few deep covers you may know: “Beautiful Eyes of Virgina” by Lemuel Turner, “Steamboat Gwine Round Da Bend” by John Fahey, and “Weary Lonesome Blues” by Roy Harvey and Leonard Copeland.

Watery Love: September 9, 2016 Three Lobed / WXDU Day Show, Hopscotch Music Festival, King’s (Raleigh, NC)

“We’ve arrived at the volume plateau of the day” Three Lobed‘s Cory Rayborn said as he introduced the Philly “supergroup” Watery Love, taking the stage at the annual Three Lobed / WXDU Day Show at King’s during Hopscotch Music Festival. Rayborn wasn’t lying–the band came out of the gate with the loud-as-fuck blast of “Ned’s Dreamcatcher” and didn’t let up from there. As we were streaming the show live on Duke University radio station WXDU, the team handling that end of the business had to work overtime to “bleep” vocalist Richie Charles’ (of Richie Records) dirty words back to PG-13. Indeed, this was dirty, cuss-spitting, fire-breathing, bad-ass scuzz rock and it was not to be stopped, by outdoor sunshine or otherwise. But while any group of yahoos can stand up and make noise, what sets Watery Love, and this particular performance, apart is that these guys hang together so well, playing well and turning all of that energy into something deceptively cohesive.

This was a perfect wake-up call on a day with a very wide palette of artists, and regulars Charles and Max Milgram (guitar) had arrived equipped with extra firepower in the form of Purling Hiss‘ Mike Polizze and Ben Leaphart, together with harplist/multi-instrumentalist Mary Lattimore (possibly the day’s MVP, or at least, the person who played with the most different bands) on bass, drums and keys, respectively. Watery Love has been a band since 2008, but their performances, especially outside of Philly, have been sporadic, and their recorded output is equally limited. Seeing them is a treat, and the energy they expect is equal to the moments they inhabit. There were many very, very fine performances on this day, but this might be the only one that had even the people in the back howling with glee like teenagers. Whatever it is these guys have, make sure you try to catch some of it.

I recorded this set with King’s engineer Brad Womack’s house mix, plus an additional soundboard channel, and Schoeps MK4V microphones onstage. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Bardo Pond: November 19, 2011 Death By Audio – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

Bardo Pond belongs to a select group of contemporary bands that are beyond categorization. Arguably their nearest contemporaries are Godspeed, but even that is an imperfect comparison. Bardo performs sweeping guitar based soundscapes, but within a song structure. At Death By Audio last weekend, the band performed a representative hour-long set to a modest but enthusiastic crowd. Along with 285 Kent, DBA has become a primary Brooklyn DIY venue with an upgraded sound system and excellent staff. The atmosphere was perfect for the Bardo show, as the relaxed approach and positive energy in the venue seemed to motivate the band. In fact, lead singer/flutist Isobel Sollenberger thanked the venue several times throughout the show. The highlight of the set was the finale, a thirteen minute version of “The Stars Behind”, which seems to encapsulate all that makes Bardo so compelling — melodic guitar intro, sweet vocals, and a slow-building powerful crescendo that crashes into an electronic outro. Its streaming below.

acidjack and I recorded this set by attaching a pair of DPA 4061 omnidirectional microphones to the low ceiling about ten feet in front of the stage, and mixed with a fine soundboard feed. The results are outstanding. Enjoy!
