Dommengang: May 31, 2018 Union Pool

L.A.’s Dommengang have returned after a three-year absence with a new record and accompanying live dates. On their second record, Love Jail, the band trades in the instrumental psych typified on Everybody’s Boogie for their own brand of mustache rock. Moreso even than the Sunset Strip vibes Dommengang channel throughout the LP, Love Jail conjures the aura of the 1975 private press LP from Minnesota band Highway. Most of all, Love Jail is a lot of fun, something you can roll down the windows and blast. If you find yourself in southwest next month (or just feel like you need a road trip), be sure to catch the band opening a few dates for Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks.

Rhyton: April 27, 2018 Wonders of Nature

Here’s a wild one from New York’s masters of improvised psych, Rhyton, opening up for fellow heads Wet Tuna at Wonders of Nature. This set captures the trio—Dave Shuford, Jimy SeiTang, and Rob Smith—in full-on improvisational mode. The direction on these jams tends more to their recent easy-going Redshift material, which just so happens to be my favorite side of Rhyton. While their earlier, heavier stuff first caught my attention, it’s Redshift that I pull out most frequently when searching for the sound. In particular, it’s the set-ending and mind-bending closer of “The Owl’s Octave” into “Pharaonic Crosstalk” that scratches that itch for exploratory rock thats meanders and grooves. Rhyt-on!

Jackie Lynn: April 27, 2017 Rough Trade NYC

On the run from the law and those outside it, Jackie Lynn nevertheless found her way to do some touring behind last year’s self-titled Thrill Jockey record. Jackie’s tale of crime, love, escape, and revenge is painted across eight tracks with synths, electronic drum tracks, twelve-string acoustic guitar, and an unmistakeable voice. The entirety of the album is performed live. Come for the thrills of “Alien Love” and “Franlkin, TN” —stay for Jackie’s catharsis (and redemption?) in “Jackie.”

I recorded this from the soundboard cage with the AKG’s set up in DIN stereo configuration, combined with a board feed courtesy of FOH Terry Mattson. The sound is terrific. Enjoy!

Brokeback: May 4, 2017 Union Pool

It doesn’t take too much digging to trace the cartography of Americana in Brokeback or their new album, Illinois River Valley Blues. For it’s in Illinois that Doug McCombs finds a microcosm of the American west and there the influence of the Spanish countryside. Outside Murphysboro, IL is home to the Little Grand Canyon; meanwhile, “Andalusia, IL,” the song, would clearly have you recall both the south of Spain and its like-named Illinois counterpart. Within the songs, the map gets folded in ways that bring the two Grand Canyons together, that position Andalusia, IL somewhere in the Spanish region. Roads are traced on guitar strings; routes and motifs are circuitous and repeating. Brokeback always take the back roads.

I recorded this from our usual outpost at Union Pool, combined with a board feed courtesy of the venue’s FOH, Doug, and touring engineer, Nick. The sound is excellent. Enjoy!

Tortoise: March 15, 2017 (Le) Poisson Rouge

Almost exactly a year since we last saw Tortoise, the band rolled back into town for a two-night stand at (le) Poisson Rouge and the Hall at MP. The great thing about seeing Tortoise—and it’s why I come back year after year—is that they’ve got such a vast catalog that there’s always new material to hear along with a revolving cast of deep cuts the band brings out on tour. Like last year’s setlist, this one from (le) Poisson Rouge airs a batch of newer songs off last year’s The Catastrophist, including the title track, “Hot Coffee,” “Shake Hands With Danger,” and again brings out Georgia Hubley to sing on “Yonder Blue.” Adding a few songs we hadn’t heard last year like “Ten-Day Interval,” “Crest,” and “Dot/Eyes,” the band also goes super-deep with “Tin Cans & Twine” from the very first Tortoise album.

I recorded this set with the AKG hypercards clamped in front of the soundboard, combined with a board feed courtesy of the LPR crew. The sound quality is outstanding. Enjoy!

People of the North: August 10, 2016 Secret Project Robot

Our lovefest with all things Oneida and Oneida-related continued earlier this month when, on the heels of the final Oneida set at Secret Project Robot, we caught People of the North in the same venue. While POTN shares personnel with Oneida (regulars Kid Millions and Bobby Matador, plus Barry London for this set), the band’s vibe is distinct, with an even-more fluid and keyboard-driven approach. The band has a new album, The Caul, on its way from Thrill Jockey, but who knows whether this material is reflective of that, or just the bandmembers’ mind-state at showtime. Whatever the reason, this 45-minute improv was yet another reminder that with this group of musicians, you can always count on an interesting trip.

I recorded this set with a pair of Schoeps MK4V microphones at the stage lip. The sound quality is outstanding. Enjoy!

Fox Millions Duo: November 21, 2015 Trans Pecos

Fox Millions Duo is in many ways an inevitable joining of talent. Greg Fox and Kid Millions are undoubtedly two of the most talented and ingenious percussionists alive today — and they also happen to both be incredibly prodigious and work within the same general musical circles. Both have appeared on the pages of this site dozens of times in many different configurations. Indeed, it was the 2012 NYCTaper 5th Anniversary concert where Greg Fox joined Millions and Oneida onstage for the first and, until later on this evening of this show, the last time. But it wasn’t until the 2014 recording sessions and the 2015 release of Lost Time (Thrill Jockey Records) that the Fox Millions Duo became a reality. Lost Time was released this Summer, but an actual live performance of the Duo is a rare event. So this past weekend, a recently booked afternoon show at Trans Pecos gave us the opportunity to catch the two together. Interestingly, the performance did not include any of the album’s material but was instead a single piece that is essentially a work in progress. The two were seated at a single snare drum in a similar configuration to Millions’ Man Forever project, but with an added wrinkle. Fox attached what appeared to be a guitar E-bow to the outside of the drum and thereafter through a cable to his laptop. The result was the activation of a sound sample upon each beat. I’ve titled this interesting number “E-bow Piece”, but in reality it is an untitled work that gives us great anticipation of a future Fox Millions release.

I recorded this set with the Schoeps cards at the front of the stage and mixed with a fine board feed. The interesting aspect of this recording is that the mics were primarily the drum beats while the board is primarily the E-bow samples. I’ve mixed the two sources to capture the music as it sounded in the center of the room. The result is quite excellent. Enjoy!

Holy Sons: August 27, 2015 Saint Vitus – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

Holy Sons

Holy Sons is the seventies-inspired heavy rock solo project from Om/Grails drummer Emil Amos. If you’ve ever seen either of those bands live, you’ll have surely noted Amos’ irrepressible energy behind the kit. It’s clear that in his free time that energy translates into some incredibly prolific songwriting—since 2000, he’s released eleven albums as Holy Sons. The most recent two, this year’s Fall of Man and last years’s The Fact Facer, were both released on Thrill Jockey, always an indicator of high quality. For his touring in support of Fall of Man, Amos has tapped Dommengang‘s rhythm section of Brian Markham and Adam Bulgasem. To say this trio rocks is an understatement—these guys could break concrete using only guitar, bass, and drums.

Holy Sons will be back in NYC on October 30 at City Winery as part of a tour with Jay Farrar. That show is sold out, but if you’re lucky enough to have gotten tickets, be sure to show up early for Holy Sons. The full listing of tour dates is over at Thrill Jockey.

Eleventh Dream Day: August 21, 2015 Mercury Lounge – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

Eleventh Dream Day is one of those bands that you can’t believe never became more famous. The Chicago stalwarts — whose core includes singer/guitarist Rick Rizzo, bassist Doug McCombs (also of Tortoise and Brokeback) and drummer/singer Janet Bean (also of Freakwater), now joined by guitarist Jim Elkington (Tweedy) and keyboardist Mark Greenberg — have been at this since the 1980s, and are often hailed as the Midwest’s answer to Yo La Tengo. There’s some truth to that, to be sure, in terms of what their musical choices suggest about their record collections, as well as the more obvious female drummer comparison, but EDD put forth a harder-edged, more blue collar aesthetic than their NYC counterparts. Nobody ever tags the oft-heralded YLT as “underrated,” either. Like a lot of bands that got swept up in the post-Nirvana gold rush, Eleventh Dream Day weren’t so much “underrated” as “screwed over by major label incompetence,” but nobody is denying that they belonged on bigger stages. Unlike the majority of their peers who found themselves in the same spot they persevered, and even thrived, as part of the underground where they belonged in the first place.

EDD’s tour this year consisted of a scant four dates built around the members’ other commitments, and we were lucky enough to get one of them at Mercury Lounge. The vets are out flogging their latest release, Works For Tomorrow, which also has the distinction of being one of the very best among their deep catalog. The band came out swinging with the the album’s title track, followed by the new (and arguably album-defining) “Vanishing Point” and “Go Tell It” before heading into the hyper-political “The People’s History.” Bean and Rizzo’s interplay as vocalists works well, such as on the new “The Unknowing.” After that, we got one of the band’s older tracks, “Bagdad’s Last Ride” from 1989’s Beet. Before heading back into new material, the band treated us to one of the night’s two covers, this one the Wiper’s “Taking Too Long.” Fans of the old-school material had plenty to love in “Orange Moon” from 1994’s Ursa Major, whose dark lyrics seemed more deeply felt on this go than on the album original. The second cover, an rocked-up version of Judy Henske’s damaged-folk jam “Snowblind,” might well have been the night’s culminating moment, letting Bean match Henske’s gasoline-drinking vocals as the guitarists got some room to shred. It’s not really fair to call a band of this impact “Chicago’s Yo La Tengo.” Eleventh Dream Day are Chicago’s Eleventh Dream Day, and they did their home city and their fans proud with this one.

Dommengang is the latest addition to Thrill Jockey’s roster of some of the finest hard psych bands out there, including Eternal Tapestry, Pontiak, White Hills, Rhyton, and Arbouretum—just to name a few. Celebrating the release of their new record, Everybody’s Boogie, Dommengang stopped by Union Pool this past weekend for a one-off gig to air tracks off that record. Despite frontman Sig Wilson’s insistence that the band hasn’t played together in a year, it doesn’t show as the band immediately syncs into a lockstep groove that doesn’t waver during their thirty-plus-minute set. Underpinning Wilson’s guitar riffage are bassist Brian Markham and drummer Adam Bulgasem. The three are clearly comfortable playing together and after seeing their live set I get the impression that Everybody’s Boogie is one of those albums born of extensive jamming that’s then honed into an album. Favorites here include the chugging “CC,” “Her Blues” (for which the band made a video), and the twangy “Hats Off to Magic.” So far no more live dates have been announced but east and west coast dates are promised in support of Everybody’s Boogie.

I recorded this set with the AKGs clamped to the balcony. Though I got a board feed from Union Pool FOH Kevin, I set the levels a little high and ended up with some distortion so this recording only uses the room mics. However, Kevin’s expertise behind the board and Union Pool’s excellent sound system make for a terrific recording that captures all of Dommegang’s heaviness. I’m sure you’ll enjoy it!
