Kevin Morby: September 9, 2017 Hopscotch Music Festival, King’s (Raleigh, NC)

Kevin Morby’s star continues to rise, and deservedly so, with his latest album City Music continuing the confident vein of his previous work. Like most of Kevin’s recent shows that I’ve attended, this headlining night at King’s during Hopscotch Music Festival was packed. I’m not sure how much of a contribution the Volvo commercial has made to Kevin’s popularity, but anything that gets more people in the door for him, I’ll take it. Certainly, Morby is now far beyond the “formerly of Woods” label; he’s a big deal in his own right.

This being the end of the night, the crowd was fired up and rowdy, and Morby and his band handled that gamely, putting on a loose-but-rocking set to go with the overall mood. Morby kept the set focused on the new record, while sprinkling it with some of his best-loved songs, including “Harlem River” from Kevin’s first album, of the same name, plus “I Have Been to the Mountain,” “Dorothy,” and “Destroyer” from Singing Saw. But it was the “encore” portion of this show that will probably be best remembered, as Morby took us through his version of reggae-rockers Sublime’s mid-90s classic, “What I Got,” followed by his special version of the Velvet Underground’s “Rock & Roll.” It was the perfect kind of end-of-festival show, with a meeting of the minds between performer and audience that benefited both.

I recorded this set with our friend Randy’s installed AKG 460 microphones in the “FOB/DFC” position, plus a feed of Evan Lamb’s house mix. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Dean and Britta: December 15, 2016 Philadephia

In 2010, Dean and Britta released 13 Most Beautiful: Songs for Andy Warhol’s Screen Tests, a soundtrack for the pop artist’s black and white film clips of his “superstars” that was commissioned by the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh. The selection of subjects vary from the well-known (Lou Reed, Dennis Hopper) to the iconic (Edie Sedgwick, Nico) to the obsure (Paul America, Freddie Herko) but all are connected by their work with Warhol. The album incorporates Wareham/Phillips original compositions, one unreleased Luna track, a lost Velvet Underground cover and several other covers in a project that provides emotionally apposite tributes for these historical figures.

In December of 1966, the Velvet Underground and the Exploding Plastic Inevitable first appeared in concert in Philadelphia at the Y as part of the Philadelphia Art Festival. Many of the subjects of 13 Most Beautiful were in attendance and captured for history via photographs that were displayed at the Y’s 50th anniversary of this pivotal moment in the City’s art and musical history. The ultimate celebration of the half-century anniversary occurred in mid-December with a performance by Dean and Britta of their tribute album.

The set began with a pre-recorded intro of the ambient “Richard Rheem Theme” as the band entered the room. Thereafter, the 13 album was performed in its natural order. This was not however a strictly album-order performance but rather featured in-between song descriptions of the characters and history of the subjects — the funny, sad and often tragic lives of Warhol’s iconic subjects. Dean and Britta clearly have connected personally with this material and the result was a concert of great emotion that is one of my favorite ever performances by the couple.

The recording was captured by Kubacheck from a very advantageous position with his best mobile rig and the sound quality is superb. Enjoy!

Yo La Tengo: December 10, 2012 Maxwell’s (Hanukkah Night 3) – Flac/MP3/Streaming

While Hanukkah at Maxwell’s is a long-time Yo La Tengo tradition, another of the band’s regular gigs is the WFMU Marathon where YLT plays requests which are invariably eclectic covers. While Night 3 of this year’s Hanukkah was a tremendous show for a variety of reasons, it was one cover that stole the show. This night will forever be known as the “Sister Ray” show. I asked YLT’s long-time superb FOH Mark if he’d ever seen them play the song — they have done a ton of VU covers over the years — and he only remembered one other performance of “Sister Ray”. Perhaps fueled by the guest performances of various members of the Feelies, the band’s set was a scortcher from the get-go. On any other night, the band’s new cover of Neil Young’s “Time Fades Away” would have been the story, it was the night’s last song where the magic reached its peak. This wasn’t a simple walk through one of the Velvet Underground’s most compelling songs, it was a full-on seventeen-minute immersion into the song. Glenn Mercer and Bill Million joined and the noisy axe trio with Ira was a breathtaking display of authentic garage style guitar.

I recorded this show in the same manner at the other nights and the sound is superb. Enjoy!
