New Fiery Furnaces Live Album Features NYCTAPER Recordings

May 19, 2008
By

We spoke today via email with Jason Lowenstein from the Fiery Furnaces. There was a rumor floating around the official Furnaces forum (temporarily offline for upgrades) that the new Furnaces live album Remember was culled entirely from “bootlegs”. This rumor is not completely true. The recordings that provide the raw material for Remember include over a dozen recorded by Jason himself, three multitrack recordings and five recordings from nyctaper.

Obviously, we are thrilled to have contributed material to an official release for one of our favorite bands. This kind of news makes all the hard work worthwhile.

Remember will be released in August by Thrill Jockey, but the album is finished and pressed and copies will be available at Fiery Furnaces merch tables at concerts this summer.

Visit Fiery Furnaces website or MySpace page for more concert dates.

More information about times and tickets is available at the Webster Hall site [HERE].

Mountain Goats May 16, 2008 Brooklyn Masonic Temple – Flac and MP3 Downloads

The Mountain Goats stepped back in time last night at the Masonic Temple in Brooklyn. In 90s fashion, John Darnielle performed solo as bassist Peter Hughes and drummer Jon Wurster did not make the trip to NYC for this Aids Walk Benefit. John performed no songs from the Mountain Goats 2008 release Heretic Pride, dipping into the older catalog for such early chestnuts as “Young Caesar 2000”, “Going to Scotland” “The Last Day of Jimi Hendrix’s Life” and “Baboon”. The result was an extraordinary and unique Mountain Goats concert for the year 2008.

We recorded from literally 10 feet in front of the right PA stacks with the hyper-directional DPA microphones. The recording is very clear and contains almost no crowd noise during songs. The only “flaws” are the two songs where John sang in the front of the crowd and away from the vocal microphone and we were able to capture very little vocal audio. Other than those two numbers, this is a recording of outstanding clarity and balance. Enjoy!

This recording is now available for Download in FLAC and MP3 at Archive.org [HERE].

Steve Wynn to Perform “Days of Wine and Roses” in Entirety

May 16, 2008
By

Steve Wynn was the frontman for the early 80’s post-punk band The Dream Syndicate. Their first full album, 1982’s Days of Wine and Roses is one of the best albums from this period and was influential in the west coast music that followed in the late 80s and early 90s.

Steve Wynn & The Miracle 3 will perform Days of Wine and Roses from start to finish at Maxwell’s on July 25, 2008. As Steve Wynn has an open taping policy, we will be there to record this excellent event.

Steve Wynn has pursued a solo career since the Dream Syndicate ended in 1989, garnering enough cred to merit a tribute album (From a Man of Mysteries) with covers by bands such as The Silos, Minus 5, Chuck Prophet, and Sid Griffin of The Long Riders.

Please support Steve Wynn and purchase his official releases from the store at his website.

The Loom May 11, 2008 Pianos – Flac and MP3 Downloads

Of the four bands who performed at the nyctaper Anniversary Concert last Sunday, The Loom was the band with whom we were the least familiar. To say that The Loom’s performance was a revelation would be to understate the significance of this unit. They combine musical talent, strong writing, and an abundant amount of band camaraderie into an intense amalgam of folk, americana, bluegrass and alt-country. The Loom are releasing their debut EP in the next month, and as we told vocalist/guitarist John Fanning after show the not-yet-finished recordings on their site do not do them justice. We hope that the final product captures the spirit we experienced on Sunday.

As this was an nyctaper-produced event, we were not in a position to run microphones for this recording. We patched out of the soundboard into a digital pre-amp and captured the raw board feed. The soundboard mixes in small clubs tend to be quite heavy in vocals and kick drum, and this recording tends towards that mix but also contains acceptable amounts of the other instruments in this six-piece band. Enjoy!

Chris Difford May 13, 2008 Maxwell’s – Flac and MP3 Downloads

On some level, it has to be quite disconcerting to play a room the size of Maxwell’s and have literally every single person in the room singing along with every classic song. At Maxwell’s Tuesday night, Chris Difford seemed relaxed and slightly amused at the fan participation, and indeed borrowed the crowd to help him through some of the harder Squeeze vocals normally assigned to Glen Tilbrook’s tenor. Difford’s new album The Last Temptation of Chris features several strong numbers that were performed, including the poignant “Battersea Boys”, but the intimate setting was most powerful during the crowd’s many singalongs.

There is a story behind my permission to record this show. My initial email to Chris was during the Squeeze tour last year, and he wondered whether I meant taping “like the deadhead way”. Later, when I explained the interactive and promotional aspects of the site, he was for the idea. So thanks to Mr. Difford and to the Maxwell’s crew. The recording is a fine mix of the very boisterous audience and the very well-mixed soundboard. Enjoy!

Antietam and Ladybug Transistor — Free Concert in front of Brooklyn Public Library

May 14, 2008
By

I guess this gig makes perfect sense, since Tara Key from Antietam is in fact a librarian, but we find this one pretty interesting and slightly amusing. The Saturday afternoon readers’ attempts to “shh” the noise will be futile, as Antietam’s powerful post-punk will be on display across the Plaza.

Who: Antietam and Ladybug Transistor
Where: Brooklyn Public Library — Grand Army Plaza Branch [MAP]
When: Saturday May 31, 2008

Market Hotel Cases Dismissed

May 13, 2008
By

Today in a Manhattan courtroom, four of the eight charges against the Market Hotel arising from the legal problems encountered in February were dismissed outright. The other four matters were given an administrative adjournment to a date in June, and are expected to follow the same course.

A judge ruled that the Showpaper benefit held on February 28, 2008 did not violate the “bottle club” statute, and granted the attorney’s motion to dismiss the cases on both technical and legal grounds.
