Acidjack reports:
Godspeed You! Black Emperor returned to New York after a nine-year break from our city. How the world has changed since then. When the band last played here, their music could have been the soundtrack to those times – a soundtrack to an era of real fear – not of something to do with esoteric finance – but a visceral, inescapable apprehension of a decaying world. GYBE are an unabashedly political band, and their music, as well as the intense visuals that their live performances soundtrack, are political in a mostly-abstract way. The visuals are mash-ups that evoke the world’s extremes; majesty and beauty in the midst of nascent dread. Here you see the fires of smoldering factories soundtracked by a plaintive surge of sound, where the sound of even the lowly triangle can take on menace. But there is beauty there, as there is in an unmolested glen; in a snippet of a nostalgic ramble that is both endearing and creepy. During the two and a half hour opus that was this phenomenal return to Brooklyn at the Brooklyn Masonic Temple (which followed a night at Terminal 5, and was followed by another night at the Masonic Temple), we were reminded that out of each paroxysm of suffering and bout of anxiety, there remains the zeal and fervor of hope. As one song flowed seamlessly into the next, it was impossible not to be taken over by it all, consumed by the vision of these masterful Montreal-based players.

When they left the stage the images endured; the fire and the pity and the violence and the hope; the precious and the profane. There are few musical acts that can cause such waves of emotion. Godspeed You Black Emperor! is one of them. Welcome back.

I recorded this set with the Schoeps microphones on a high pole in the center of the room. Thank you to Si for the excellent house mix and her support. Enjoy!”

Thanks to Ronen and the Wordless Music Series for their generosity and support!

All four of the Masonic Temple and St. Paul’s concerts were recorded and will be posted in the coming days.

Harvey Milk: March 15, 2011 Union Pool – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

Harvey Milk has been described as metal, sludge, sludge-core, noise rock, and experimental noise. Labels aside, this is an unabashed rock band — one that plays at an extreme volumes, draws from countless influences, and plays without the slightest pretense. Last night was the closing of their three-show residency at Union Pool, and while the previous shows had featured complete album performances, Tuesday’s set was a representative mix of their material split evenly between the old and new. Harvey Milk reached all the way back to 1994 and the first album (“Merlin is Magic”), and performed four songs from 1997’s The Pleaser, including “Anthem” (streaming below). The newer material included several songs from Special Wishes (2006) and Life (2008), but skipped 2010’s Small Turn, which has been performed in full on the first night of the run. Lead guitarist Creston Spiers was armed with two huge dual guitar amps and his ax filled the small room easily — each song providing ear-splitting chunks of sonic goodness. As the set came to a close, the band dispensed with theatrics and played through the encore songs without leaving the stage. If any single act could encompass the power of this evening, it occurred before the final crush of guitar in the set’s closer (“Death”) when Spiers retreated to his amps and turned the volumes of all the dials up to the max in one fluid motion before returning to the microphone to finish the set. Turn it up, indeed.

We recorded this set from the elevated soundboard area. We attached the Neumann’s to the rail and pointed them at the stage amps and mixed in a slight board feed (75/25). The soundboard mix provides mostly vocals and drums to counteract the high volume of guitars in the room. The final product is a superb balanced mix of this amazing show. Enjoy!

Nicole Atkins: March 11, 2011 Maxwell’s – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

On the final night of her current tour, Nicole Atkins came home to a sold out Maxwell’s on Friday night. The tour in support of the heralded new album Mondo Amore (Razor & Tie) began at Bowery Ballroom more than a month ago and swung cross-country before its triumphant return. The band at Maxwell’s was the core group — not the orchestra-sized outfit at Bowery — and the set’s full throttle energy reflected it. From the opening notes of “Heavy Boots” the band was tight and focused and nicely complimented the main instrument — Nicole’s powerful voice. And she was in fine voice all evening in all modes, whether folk (“Monterey Honey”), ballad (“Hotel Plaster”), honky tonk (“Cry Cry Cry”) or a classic soul cover (“See And Don’t See”, streaming below). Nicole will play several SXSW shows before returning to dates in the Spring, which include Bonnaroo Festival and several dates with the Avett Brothers.

I recorded this set from our usual location and setup in this venue and the sound is outstanding. Nicole’s sound engineer Jeff mixed her vocals prominently and to perfection and the result is a recording that truly reflects of the strengths of this artist. Enjoy!

Akron/Family: March 5, 2011 Bowery Ballroom – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

Akron/Family shows tend to be celebratory affairs, so the end-of-tour sold-out show at Bowery Ballroom on Saturday night was quite likely the ultimate A/F affair. As the band is touring throughout the year behind the superb new album S/T II: The Cosmic Birth and Journey of Shinju TNT, the setlists have been geared primarily towards the new material, but on this night the band took their time and opened smoothly into a sweet version of the older “We All Will”, before launching to an extended “River”. Of the Shinju songs, “So It Goes” was quite electric on this night and we’ve chosen to stream it below. Several drum-oriented jams broke out during the evening, not the least of which closed out the incendiary “Raising the Sparks”, a song which had so impressed at Knitting Factory last month for entirely different reasons. In a true acknowledgment of the collective energy of the crowd, A/F closed the show with a full participatory version of “Love And Space” that extended for a full eight minutes. Akron/Family will start another tour in a few weeks, when they will play the West coast and the Soutwest.

I recorded this set with the four microphone rig from our standard balcony location in this venue and the sound quality is superb. Enjoy!

Fergus & Geronimo: February 23, 2011 285 Kent – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

March 7, 2011
By

[concert poster by Olivia Hu]

They hail from Denton, Texas and their label is based in Seattle, but on Wednesday last, Fergus & Geronimo seemed perfectly at home in a DIY warehouse in Brooklyn. Their eclectic and multi-influenced album Unlearn (Hardly Art) comprised about half their set, but the songs took a decidedly more garage-rock sound in the live setting. This was appropriate, considering that they anchored a five-band late night set at a classic ToddP event. Fergus & Geronimo are currently tour out West, but will play a handful of shows at SXSW before returning to the East coast. They will appear at Death By Audio on April 2.

I recorded this set with with hypercardioid Neumann microphones mixed with a feed from the board. The sound in the warehouse was quite boomy and the board feed was vocal heavy, but the overall mix provides a fine listening experience. Enjoy!

Tristen: February 23, 2011 Knitting Factory – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

Tristen Gaspadarek has been writing and performing her heartfelt country-tinged songs for nearly half of her twenty-six years, and her intrinsic wisdom-beyond-years is evident in the strength of her writing. Tristen and The Ringers performed a tight forty-five minute set at Knitting Factory last night that featured much of the material from her new album Charlatans At The Garden Gate released last week on American Myth Records. It is an album that chronicles the power and destructive nature of love seen through the weary eyes of experienced world traveler. The most stark recitation of the struggle is featured in the relationship-with-an-addict number “Baby Drugs”, which can be streamed below. Tristen is one of those seriously talented artists who we expect big things from in the near future, and Charlatans is the likely conduit to that success. Tristen’s current tour wraps up with three more dates this week, before she heads to SXSW, and then continues throughout the country during April and May.

I recorded this set with the four microphone rig from our standard location in this venue and the sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Delicate Steve: February 17, 2011 Knitting Factory – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

Delicate Steve began as the solo recording project of Steve Marion, but with the release and subsequent success of Wondervisions (Luaka Bop Records), Steve has now become a full touring band. On Thursday at Knitting Factory in an opening set for Akron/Family, Delicate Steve played a short but sweet set of his multi-influenced melodic guitar instrumentals. While Steve cites Ponytail and Dirty Projectors as influences (both of whom are contributors), the influences could also reach back to Mike Oldfield or Carlos Santana. The end result is a rich amalgam that produces something fairly unique in “indie rock” — instrumental songs without irony or pretense. At the Knit, the band performed much of Wondervisions and a few unreleased tracks. Stream a live performance of the title track from the album below.

I recorded this set in the same manner as the Akron/Family recording and the sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Akron/Family: February 17, 2011 Knitting Factory – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

Akron/Family live shows are always tribal full participation events. The band encourages others to become involved with the show, but at Thursday night’s show at Knitting Factory it became part of the performance. After an absolutely raging sixty-minute main set, the forty-minute encore/second set began with artist Aki Sasamote decorating the stage and when the band returned, she rapped them in tape and painted on Seth Olinsky’s back. While the art was performed, the band played an alternatively quiet and noisy jam segment while accompanied by a three-piece horn section. The horn players seemed to be following a choreographed dance around the stage while they played. The set then segued nearly into a four song segment that began quietly (“Fuji II”, “We All Will” and “Dylan Pt. 1”) before crashing into the finale with rousing eight-minute version of “Light Emerges”. Two of those songs appear on the band’s outstanding new album S/T II: The Cosmic Birth and Journey of Shinju TNT (Dead Oceans). The first set of Thursday’s show was dominated by songs from Shinju, including highlights “So It Goes” and “Another Sky” (streaming below). But the peak performance of the first hour was the remarkable A/K staple “Raising The Sparks” which endured for eighteen jam-filled minutes, and presaged the wonderful strangeness to come. The Knitting Factory show was the first date in Akron/Family’s extended tour which returns to NYC for a March 5 date at Bowery Ballroom.

I recorded this set with the four microphone rig from our standard location in the venue, and the sound quality is quite excellent. There are segments when the band is extremely quiet on stage (often off-mic), and during those points the noise in the venue (bar, audience, etc) can be heard. Enjoy!

“Like an old testament prophet, or a Morman elder, or (all right, what do I know about it?) like that guy on Big Love, our favorite openly practicing musical polygamist David Lowery brought both of his bands to NYC for back to back performances at the Highline Ballroom on January 14. I’ve been reading the Keith Richards book, which has me all in a lather for rock and roll tell-all, so I couldn’t help but wonder what the dynamic on the bus is. One big happy family? Hmm. Maybe, but the mind is inevitably drawn to the sordid. Is it Cracker in the front, wearing their greater commercial success like a warm parka, loud and cheerful game of 20 questions, Camper Van Beethoven in the back, sullen and pissy, answering in monosyllables? Or is it CVB the first and truest love, despite Cracker’s headline position on the bill, serenely confident of favor, irritatingly aloof in the face of drunken, bitter Cracker histrionics? I guess we’ll have to wait for the Immergluck book to find out. In the meantime, I marvel at what an absolute delight this pair of shows proved to be. I liked so many things about them I hardly know where to begin. I should say that I was a fan back in the nineties but I’d completely lost touch with this music: all I knew is that I used to like it. As often as not, things you used to love come back to embarrass you (just give me a second to queue up this episode of Lost in Space on Hulu . . . OK, I’m back now), and so I was gratified and relieved to find that in this case my taste was vindicated by strong performances of a jaw droppingly rich musical smorgasbord. It’s a brilliant format, playing consecutively as CVB and Cracker, and it gives the concert goer some real insights into the different approaches taken by these two successful projects. I found myself about to use the word “evolution” back there, but that isn’t it: CVB didn’t evolve into Cracker anymore than the Beatles evolved into Wings. Two bands. Some similarities. Some differences. Both draw on a rich California compost heap of musical influences (the Dead, Bakersfield, Cali ska) and have a sound founded on solid musicianship and terrific guitar work. I was struck by how really well both Greg Lisher and Johnny Hickman played. CVB is fermented longer and a little bit tangier and is in some ways more interesting musically, where Cracker is more buffed up alpha pop, steroids sure, but hits the home runs fair enough. Both bands sounded absolutely fresh: no taint of the nostalgia act here despite playing sets consisting almost wholly of albums recorded 20 years ago.

So, yeah, this show was constructed around the “play the whole album” gimmick, which is becoming increasingly common, and about which I have a certain shallow ambivalence. Upside, you know you’ll hear songs you like. Downside, it panders to a lack of faith in the fanbase. It’s the same impulse that’s turning Broadway into a recycling center for popular middlebrow movies. It seeks to assure the public that even if they are disappointed, at least they won’t be surprised. A concert can be a revelation. A live show allows a band to play their songs reworked in interesting ways, to add intros and codas and fool with the mix of instruments and the tempo, to play covers and obscure tracks. They can petulantly refuse to play their big hit, or play it so flaccidly it’s like a big contemptuous finger to the audience (this I don’t like), or going the other way they can play their big hit twice: once early and once again at the end. I’ve seen all that and every time it makes me glad I didn’t just stay home and listen to the album. Or they can just play the album, which in general teaches me less. Gosh, I’m whining and I don’t like it, and it strikes me that in this case at least, I’m being a bit of a bad sport. Having to listen to Key Lime Pie and Kerosene Hat, both in my top ten list of all time favorites, is really nothing to complain about.

Final interesting tidbit. All the CVB musicians come back onstage to stage to join Cracker for an incendiary, orgasmic “Interstellar Overdrive”, except that Cracker bass player heads backstage. Then it hit me: I’ve never seen a band with two bass players. I actually had never thought about it before, but there it is. Every single other instrument is often doubled or tripled. CVB used four guitars on some songs and southern rock bands have two or three of everything except . . . bass guitar. So it’s my assumption that there must be a reason that two bass guitars simply undoes a rhythm section. There would be no reason in the world not to have everybody in the (OK, the evidence points to it) big happy CVB/Cracker family onstage at the end, no reason to send poor Sal off to a lonely backstage exile with nothing but scads of coked up matchstick model groupies to keep him company (whoa, I think that’s the Keef book talking), except that having two bass players is musical suicide. I’d like to hear peoples thoughts about this.”

Recorded and minimally produced by mrsaureus, standing center floor five feet back from the stage, Core-Sound High End Binaurals to Sony PCM-M10 (48 kHZ, 24 bit), WavePad Sound Editor to chop and FLAC only. Some crowd noise but sounds nice.
