Truck America Festival: Overview and Photos (Recordings Coming Soon!)

The Truck America Festival this past weekend in Big Indian, New York, was not so much a festival as a summer camp for like-minded musicians. In an age when “festival” has come to mean a glut of unrelated bands playing an uninspired set and moving on, Truck America was a leap back in time. We arrived on Friday and were immediately greeted by friendly faces, many of whom would later entertain us. In the Roadhouse, Tim Easton’s Friday late night set was witnessed by Gary Louris, Jason Russo (Hopewell), and Cat Martino, all of whom would play together on stage for Gary’s set on Saturday. We saw Jonathan Donahue of Mercury Rev watching a set by Spouse early on Saturday, while we realized that the band on stage were folks we’d chatted with on Friday. It was that kind of weekend. At the center of it all were the brothers Bennett, Joe and Robin, who made everyone welcome. On Saturday, Joe personified the spirit of musical community. He played bass with Gary Louris, violin with Neil Halstead, trumpet with Mercury Rev, scored the orchestra for Mercury Rev, and conducted the band. Similarly, Robin played with a series of bands throughout the weekend, and both emceed.

Friday night’s highlights included the amazing set by The Joy Formidable in the main tent, who by happenstance stayed the night in the room next to mine in the main house of the resort (pictured above). After a very long day, I literally began to nod out on top of my equipment when I was jolted awake by a phenomenal 3 a.m. set in the roadhouse by Hopewell.

Saturday was relaxing day, and we stayed primarily in the main stage tent (pictured above), while enjoying five different bands. Gary Louris, Mercury Rev and Neil Halstead (who spent the day chasing his toddler) were all highlights. Throughout the weekend, the scenic beauty of the Catskills provided an ideal setting for what was a thoroughly enjoyable weekend of the best indie-folk that the world has to offer.

With the great assitance of the Festival’s excellent sound crew, we captured nine separate sets. We expect to post these individually over the next couple of weeks, along with more details from the Fest, and sincerely hope that our readers will support the bands and next year’s Truck America Fest.

Special Announcement: NYCTaper 3rd Anniversary Concert!

[poster created by Fumi at Miniminiaturemouse.com]

In May, NYCTaper celebrates its third year in existence. In May of 2007, we opened the site with a recording I made in Iceland of the Sugarcubes reunion. It was an odd choice for a site dedicated to new music in NYC, but we have never been predictable. In the next three years, we have posted nearly five hundred recordings of a littany of bands from a multitude of genres, with the goal of introducing our readers to artists who we believe deserve the attention and support. These three years have been an incredibly rewarding experience, and despite a few pitfalls, its been almost universally positive. Frankly, the highlights are too many to list.

In recognition of this anniversary, we are presenting a very special concert featuring four outstanding bands who have graced the pages of NYCTaper over the last year. The show is on Saturday May 15 at Pianos. Doors are at 8 p.m. and admission is $10.

Here are the details:
NYCTaper 3rd Anniversary Concert
Saturday May 15, 2010
Pianos
158 Ludlow Street (MAP)
Lower East Side NYC
$10

8 p.m. Doors

9 p.m. Natureboy
We were so impressed with Sara Kerminshahi’s recording project (accompanied by Masterface) when she performed at Union Pool in November, that her set was in our list of Top 10 Concerts of 2009. Sara combines her rich vocals with acoustic instruments and electronic beats to present her atmospheric melodic songs in an irresistable package. Not to be missed.

10 p.m. Uninhabitable Mansions
The Brooklyn “supergroup” is an art collective of musicians from bands such as Au Revoir Simone, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Radical Dads, and Dirty on Purpose. The abundance of talent combines for an outstanding indie-pop unit who we adored at Bowery in December.

11 p.m. Dinosaur Feathers
In the wake of the release of acclaimed new album Fantasy Memorial, The Feathers are on the verge of becoming an indie sensation. They appeared on NYCTaper in March, and shortly thereafter we booked them for this show. Recently, the band were invited to play some major shows including Sasquatch Festival and Pier 54 (with the Antlers). This show at Pianos may be the smallest venue DF play before the buzz takes over.

12 p.m. ArpLine
Its just a matter of time with ArpLine. Their intense psychedelic synth rock has appeared twice on NYCTaper, in March from Glasslands and in January from Mercury Lounge. ArpLine’s new album Travel Book is already on our friend Jonny Leather’s best albums of 2010.

Let us know that you’re coming on the Facebook Invite Page for this event.

Here is the Pianos listing.

Hope to see our readers there!

Mon Khmer: April 21, 2010 Mercury Lounge – Flac and MP3 Downloads

When acidjack last captured Mon Khmer for NYCTaper, the band’s debut album had not yet been released. In the intervening months, the band’s debut has garnered some well deserved glowing reviews. Last week at Mercury Lounge, Mon Khmer’s distinctive take on prog-style indie rock was on display and the results were impressive. On stage the band is tight and while the focus is clearly on bandleader Hammarsing, we were also particularly impressed with drum and pedal steel work. On this night, they worked through several of the album tracks and also introduced a few unreleased numbers.

Mon Khmer has two upcoming local shows, May 3 at Santos Party House, and May 13 at Brooklyn Bowl.

Titus Andronicus: April 24, 2010 Maxwell’s – Flac and MP3 Downloads

Titus Andronicus capped off their 53-day “Moni-tour” with an epic show at Maxwell’s that those in the know were calling “the best they’ve ever played”. When I ran into Patrick before the show he greeted me with “I’m glad you’re here” and told me that he expected this show would be a good one to record — he was right. As the band opened with the crowd singalong “A More Perfect Union”, it was obvious that the energy in the room was crackling. Titus sold out venues many times the size of Maxwell’s this tour, so that Friday’s small crowd was all diehards anxious to vocalize their support. The band played much of The Monitor material, with a few older numbers (“Joset” and “Mahwah” were notable), and performed a Spider Bags cover with Spider Dan on vocals. By the time the band reached the end of the set, Patrick gave a nice little speech about the tour, and concluded the show with a powerful “Four Score and Seven”. This set presents the perfect bookend for the early March tour-opener at Bowery Ballroom, which we also recorded.

I recorded this set in the usual location in this venue, with the microphones mounted high inside the soundboard booth mixed with a feed from the board. The sound quality is outstanding. Enjoy!

Health: April 24, 2010 Solar One – Flac and MP3 Downloads

This Health gig was announced less than twenty-four hours before it happened. Solar One is a “green energy arts and entertainment center” that is literally located at the East River, on the pier at 23rd Street. As a result, this may be the most spur of the moment recording in the history of this site. I read about the show a few hours before it took place, found myself with some time before heading over to Hoboken for Titus, and got wired and walked 10 minutes to the park in time to capture the gig. Health is not much different stylistically from when we last saw them two years ago — high energy noise rock with a lot of action on stage — but the music is more mature and the band has clearly grown into their sound. Although this set was played through a modest system with city noise all around (the river, the FDR Drive above us, and some nasty wind), the band’s sound pierced through the distractions and their set was short but solid. Highlights included “We Are Water” from Health’s 2009 release Get Color, and an excellent throbbing-beat new song “USA Boys”, which is the only new track on their forthcoming (June release) Disco2 Remix album.

I recorded this set with the DPAs in a mobile rig, but the sound quality is definitely limited by the system and the elements. Enjoy!

Owen Pallett: April 22, 2010 Webster Hall – Flac and MP3 Downloads

[Owen at Webster Hall in December photo by Kate Ehle]

While I watched Owen Pallett perform his magic from the front of the crowd at Webster Hall last night, I puzzled with an attempt to remember a performer who is capable of creating such a beautiful depth of sound with so few instruments. “This is harder than it looks”, he joked with the crowd after hitting a rare off-note. And indeed, while Owen makes it seem so effortless — as he sings, plays violin and keyboard over quad-layered samples in perfect sync — I could think of no other artist with such gifts capable of making such complicated music so accessible. The outstanding new album on Domino Records, Heartland, is one of the year’s best releases, but Owen performed just five of the twelve songs from the album last night. Instead, supported by multi-instrumentalist Thomas Gill for about half the set, he drew from all three full-lengths, from several singles/EPs, and one new song to compile a representative setlist. The show closed with a goofy Mariah Carey cover which proved that even this most serious artist retains his sense of humor.

I recorded this set from upfront in the crowd with my best mobile rig and the sound is outstanding. Enjoy!

The Hold Steady: April 17, 2010 Bowery Ballroom – Flac and MP3 Downloads

The Hold Steady will release their fourth studio album Heaven Is Whenever in a couple of weeks. The band is set to embark on a two-month tour to support the album. On Saturday night as a tour send-off, the Hold Steady took on the ambitious task of playing two shows in two boroughs on the same night. We sort of figured the late show at Music Hall would be a bit of a messy and drunken affair so we decided to grab a ticket to the early Bowery show. It felt strange entering Bowery Ballroom during daylight hours and setting up the equipment with the assistance of the natural light from the back window. By the time the Hold Steady took the stage at 8:30, the place was packed and all seemed right again. The band roared through an eighty-minute set which featured five of the ten new songs, and a heavy dose of Steady classics — we enjoyed “Chips Ahoy!” and “You Can Make Him Like You” in particular. Craig Finn was his usual animated self, and the addition of a new guitarist added some muscle to the band, while the loss of Franz Nicolay seemed to create a more guitar-heavy stage sound, as the new keyboardist was definitely low in the mix. At the close the set the band returned for two crowd-participation-heavy encores, and although the band still had another show to play, the Bowery performance did not seem perfunctory or rushed and we left quite satisfied.

This set was recorded from our standard position at this venue with just the Neumann hypercardioid microphones and the sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Wussy: April 16, 2010 Cake Shop – Flac and MP3 Downloads

I saw the Ass Ponys thirteen or fourteen years ago play at the late lamented club Brownie’s on Avenue A. The most lasting memory of the night was the hilarious between-song banter, primarily from Chuck Cleaver. When the Ass Ponys just sort of stopped playing in 2005-6, Chuck took up full time with his latest band Wussy. And while Wussy plays a similar intelligent americana-rock as Ass Ponys, and have inherited the gift of entertaining banter, what separates the two bands is Chuck’s new co-frontperson. Lisa Walker writes lyrics as compelling as Chuck’s and on stage, she is a tighly-wound bundle of energy uncoiling to deliver three-minute bursts of sonic goodness. At Cake Shop last night, we saw up close why the followers of this puzzlingly-obscure Cincinnati quartet are so dedicated — one fan came all the way from Canada for the show. In their seventy-five minute set, the band drew from their three excellent albums, played one new song and an Eddie Hinton cover, and returned twice for four encores.

I recorded this set from upfront, six feet from the PA. The sound quality of the recording is rich in clarity and limited sonically only by the modest system in the venue. Enjoy!

Members of Crystal Stilts have finished recording an album, Cinema Red & Blue, on which several of the band members joined with David Feck of Comet Gain. This project is due for a Spring release. In the meantime, Slumberland Records recording artists Crystal Stilts continue to work on the band’s new record. Several of those new songs poised for inclusion on the new record are captured during this set opening at Maxwell’s a few weeks back.

Obits: April 9, 2010 Irving Plaza – Flac and MP3 Downloads

You can tell much about the quality of a band by their ability to play different sizes of venues with equal success. Back in February, we saw Obits at the tiny basement-like Cake Shop — a show that featured much new material and a very intimate vibe. At Irving Plaza on Friday, Obits faced a more difficult task as the band performed middle-bill to a decidedly Jersey-centric weekend crowd there primarily to see Ted Leo’s homecoming. But there is something universal about Obits’ gritty garage guitar roots-rock, and when its delivered by four pros with impressive veteran resumes, its irresistible. And with the exception of one loud buffoon, Obits managed to convert the crowd with a set that steered mostly clear of the new material played in February and stuck to the bulk of their 2009 Subpop debut, I Blame You.

I recorded this same from the same location as the Ted Leo set and the sound is excellent. Enjoy!
