Its been quite a Summer for recordings, and we have quite a few left to capture. The recording of Wilco at Dutchess County has become one of the most popular downloads in the history of this site, and our show at Monster Island in June was an excellent night. The Fall schedule is coming together and its huge — with more to come!

If you want nyctaper to record your band, a band you represent, a show you’re promoting, or even your favorite band in the world, get me on the list and make sure everyone who needs to approve of the recording gives permission. Also, remember I’m doing this all for free — the recordings, the post-production, the reviews, the links, etc. — so treat me fairly.

Conor Oberst: July 18, 2009 Dutchess County Stadium – Flac and MP3 Downloads

Conor Oberst and The Mystic Valley Band opened for Wilco at Dutchess County Stadium last weekend and achieved an uncommon feat — the rapt attention of the majority of the crowd, which by the end of their set was “won over”. Its a difficult task to open for a band of such popularity and reverence, but Conor’s engaging stage presence and the outstanding play of the band members contributed to their success. The setlist consisted primarily of material from the band’s latest release Outer South and from Conor’s self-titled 2008 solo album, and was highlighted by the wild closing “I Don’t Want To Die (In the Hospital)”.

We recorded from the identical location and equipment as the Wilco recording, so that the quality is absolutely superb. Enjoy!

Built to Spill: July 19, 2009 Maxwell’s – Flac and MP3 Downloads (Soundboard!)

July 25, 2009

“Feel about the same but I’m 10 years older” sings Doug Martsch in the Built to Spill classic “Three Years Ago Today”. It was ten years ago when Built to Spill last played at Maxwell’s, on a unseasonably balmy night in late October of 1998. I recorded that show (the early set) by patching into the soundboard along with another guy who I knew from seeing around at shows. Ten years later that same guy (Erik) and I are friends, and he thankfully repeated history and brought to nyctaper a recording of this week’s return of Built to Spill to Maxwell’s.

This week’s show contains other eerie similarities a decade removed, particularly in the setlist. “Three Years” performed second on the list on Sunday, was the opener of the 1998 show, and “Kicked it in the Sun”, now a BTS classic, was performed as an untitled “new song” in 1998. As he did 10 years ago, Doug also opened up the floor for requests, which led this week to some of the older material rarely played these days, including “Virginia Reel Around the Fountain” and “Nowhere Nothin’ F Up”, both also repeats 10 years later.

As Built to Spill gear up to release There Is No Enemy this fall, expect to see much more of this band on nyctaper. Preliminarily, we plan to record each of the four NYC shows in October (Webster Hall and Music Hall of Williamsburg).

This recording would not have been possible with the contributions of many people, but primary thanks to Erik for recording and to Doug Martsch, who agreed in an extremely friendly and generous email to permit this recording to be posted here. Its a soundboard feed from Maxwell’s, which is an excellent venue with talented staff. The sound is quite excellent if a tad bit high in vocals as are all board recordings. Enjoy!

Tortoise: July 21, 2009 Le Poisson Rouge – Flac and MP3 Downloads

Post-rock pioneers Tortoise are back with a vengeance. Their June 2009 release Beacons of Ancestorship is easily their most powerful album since 2001’s Standard. The recent reports from the 2009 shows have been glowing, and on Tuesday night at Le Poisson Rouge, those reports were confirmed and more. Tortoise performed a stunning seventeen songs, including an unheard-of two encore segments of five total songs. The set consisted primarily of Beacons material with a nice selection of older material towards the end of the set.

We seriously acknowledge the continued excellence of Le Poisson Rouge as a venue. Their diverse and eclectic artist bookings continue to impress, and their sound system has continued to improve in quality. Additionally, the venue has been incredibly nice and cooperative to the nyctaper site in many ways, including permitting Acidjack to enter the venue early for this show to set up. The result is perhaps his finest recorded contribution to this site, a recording of outstanding balance and clarity with a remarkable bass response. Thanks again to all involved in the production of this superb listen. Enjoy!

Woods: July 15, 2009 Bowery Ballroom – Flac and MP3 Downloads

We have seen Woods on four prior occasions, but they have never sounded as good as they did Wednesday last at Bowery. While their electric “freak folk” certainly has a distinct lo-fi element that fits well with the DIY shows where we had previously seen them, the superb sound system at the Bowery clarifies the songs and gives us a different light within which to see this excellent group. As their new album Songs of Shame has received very favorable reviews, we expect that Woods will play through high-end systems often in the near future.

Acidjack recorded this set from the center of the floor, where the crowd was significantly more sedate than the Wavves set later in the evening. The sound quality is superb. Enjoy!

Anniversary Celebration of “Double Nickels” at Bowery Poetry Club with Mike Watt

July 22, 2009
By

This year marks the 25th Anniversary of one of rock music’s undoubtedly greatest albums, the Minutemen’s double lp Double Nickels on The Dime. In the tragically short career of the Minutemen, this release stands as the high water mark. Bowery Poetry Club is having a celebration of the album’s anniversary with a special concert this Saturday night. Mike Watt, bass player extraordinaire of the Minutemen, will be the special guest.

Here are the details from Bowery Poetry Club:

On Saturday, July 25, 2009, at 8 pm, we celebrate the 25th anniversary of the release of this incredible album. Be prepared for the extreme unusual, with spoken word renditions of songs on the album, musical tributes, rare videos and recordings, and special musical guest stars, including the bassist for the Minutemen, Mike Watt.
Performers include Michael T. Fournier (author of Double Nickels on the Dime (33-1/3 press), New Jersey experimental indie rock band Tweede Kamer, Minutemen cover band Pillowman (from Worcester, MA), Corndogs (from Bethpage, PA), mystery punk bassist The Bass Player from Hand Job, electro-poetic mistress Jackie Sheeler, Jazz piano cabaret duo Peter Carlaftes & Kayo, and punkster poet Kat Georges (author of Punk Rock Journal).

Miracles of Modern Science: July 16, 2009 Pianos – Flac and MP3 Downloads

July 21, 2009
By

These days its a challenge within the “indie/rock/pop” realm to actually produce music that is “original” either in its presentation, production or writing. Miracles of Modern Science have mastered that challenge. The band consists of a cello, violin, stand-up bass, mandolin and drums, and writes and performs songs that sound equally of rock, pop, opera and Broadway. MOMS have in their brief career established a unique identity. On Wednesday at Pianos, MOMS played a forty-minute set of 7 numbers, including three from their debut EP, one single (“Didit”), and three newer songs. The packed room also included another rarity in the fledgling indie band scene — several rows of rabid fans who danced, sang along and demanded an encore that the venue would not permit.

Miracles of Modern Science have two gigs left this Summer in NYC:
Jul 25 2009 Le Poisson Rouge NYC
Aug 8 2009 NYCTaper Presents @ Shea Stadium Brooklyn

We recorded from directly in front of the soundboard where we have set up for all of our Pianos recordings. Other than some distortion on the vocal microphones in the first song, the set was mixed well and this recording is an excellent listen. Enjoy!

Wilco: July 18, 2009 Dutchess County Stadium – Flac and MP3 Downloads

July 20, 2009

[photo courtesy of Mike at 50Showsat50 blog – more here]

A road trip to see Wilco — after Monday’s Coney Island excellence it seemed like a fine idea, and in the end it was infinitely worth it. On a beautiful Saturday afternoon, the two-hour ride north in fine company along the banks of the Hudson was quick and pleasant. While Dutchess County Stadium has the same general minor league field construction as Keyspan Park, its setting was a world away from Brooklyn. The vibe in the venue was friendly, relaxed, and without a scene-maker in in sight. The band seemed to understand its surroundings, as their play was deliberate though focused, and Jeff’s banter was playful and good-natured. The setlist was similar to Monday’s show but with seven different songs out of the 29 played. This show featured two early “rare” numbers — “Far Far Away” (Being There) and “Too Far Apart” (AM), the latter of which I had never before seen Wilco perform live. The show length was again approaching two and a half hours, and at 2:27 is the longest Wilco show I have ever seen.

This recording was made under absolutely ideal conditions. The location of the “section” of tapers was quite close to the stage at approximately 40 feet deep. The stand raised the microphones to an unobstructed fifteen feet, with a straight shot at the huge stacks and minimal crowd noise. The four-microphone rig captured a clear recording of such exquisite detail that we seriously recommend that readers listen to this recording on the best possible speakers available. Do the recording, the band and yourselves justice and don’t limit listen to computer speakers or an ipod. Enjoy!

Conor Oberst & The Mystic Valley Band was also recorded and will be posted here soon.

Wavves: July 15, 2009 Bowery Ballroom – Flac and MP3 Downloads

July 18, 2009

[photo by Ryan Muir courtesy of Stereogum]

This Wavves concert was already three days ago, which means that the “comeback” story is old news. In the atomic-speed Behind The Music career time of Nathan Williams, he’s undoubtedly moved on to the next chapter of the story. We are not sure whether by now he’s found Jesus, gone country, or written a symphony. What we do know is that on Wednesday at Bowery Ballroom with the reverb at full throttle, Wavves delivered a fifty-minute set of 15 songs, both old and new, to a crowd of bouncing, slamming and crowd-surfing fans all with a cast from a broken wrist on Nathan’s right arm.

Acidjack recorded this set from the middle of the floor, which was crowded and crazy. There’s quite a bit of crowd noise on this recording which rather than distracting the listener, actually adds authenticity to the capture. Enjoy!
