By

This just went up on the Sonic Youth MySpace page. No Fun Fest will take place on May 15, 16 and 17, 2009 at Music Hall of Williamsburg and the preliminary lineup includes Merzbow, Sonic Youth, Bardo Pond, Blank Dogs and Chris Corsano. Complete list at No Fun Fest 2009 website [here].

Blank Dogs‘ appearance is a rare live performance by this elusive but prodigious artist. Blank Dogs is also performing on February 6 and February 7 at ToddP events, venue TBA. NYCTaper will be recording the two live appearances in February.

Oneida Fest! December 13 at Knitting Factory

December 7, 2008
By

Oneida Fest is all night show at the Knitting Factory featuring a series of like-minded bands and friends of Brooklyn’s great psych-rock band Oneida. We know tickets are still available for this show since we bought one on Friday.

Today Oneida posted the set times. Oneida is going on at 1:45 am, which is still not the latest we have seen them start a show. In March, we recorded Oneida at the Market Hotel when their set started at 2 a.m. NYCTaper captured Oneida three other times this year, at Knitting Factory in February, at the Kitchen in June, and at South Street Seaport in August.

Here are the details:

“Sat Dec 13th – 8pm
Ticket – $10 (wow cheap!)

Main Space:
Mighty Robot Visuals
DJ Knox Overstreet – all night

9pm – Brava Spectre – nuts CT balls out psych hardcore
10:30pm – Parts and Labor – brutal squelch anthems of da highest order
12 – Sightings – Ever-flowin’ inspirational Kali-style punk (the goddess dudes – look it up)
1:45am – Oneida

Tap Bar
10 – Pterodactyl – breakneck choirboys
11:30 – Dirty Faces – a train that leaves the rails in order to destroy its destination
1am – Neptune – home-made instruments, amazing songs/performers – never seen a bad show by these dudes.

Old Office
9:30pm – Cave – pristine chaos, motorik crystals
11pm – Knyfe Hyts – musical Rube Goldberg face punches
12:30 – Oakley Hall – craft, songs, singing, energy, soul – what else is there? Well – they aren’t Zeppelin – that’s the only criticism I can think of.”

We also captured Oakley Hall twice this year, at the Knit in February and Glasslands in March.

New Orleans to New York: Hurray For The Riff Raff in NYC for 4 Shows This Week

December 4, 2008
By

Hurray For The Riff Raff is an outstanding band from New Orleans well versed in the ways of Americana and Appalachian folk music. Their CD It Don’t Mean I Don’t Love You is on constant rotation here at NYCTaper, as we are aficionados of this genre when its done correctly (i.e. Wilco, The Loom). Hurray For The Riff Raff is centered around the rich melodic vocals of Alynda Lee and a series of classic folk instruments played with understated proficiency.

Originally booked for Monday, December 8 at Pianos, Hurray For The Riff Raff now has a series of four gigs scheduled this week, beginning with a loft gig tonight.

Dec 4 2008 1087 Loft NYC
Dec 5 2008 Pete’s Candy Store Brooklyn
Dec 6 2008 Silent Barn Brooklyn
Dec 8 2008 Pianos NYC (with Sharon Van Etten)

The Pianos gig on Monday night is a free show, and nyctaper will be there to capture a recording.

Mike Doughty Kicked Out Drunks from the Stage at Woodstock

December 2, 2008
By

We have seemingly complained on a regular basis about chatting, drunks and overall rudeness at shows recently. Obviously, these types of behaviors hinder our ability to capture a recording, but the rudeness also inhibits our enjoyment of the show itself. In what is pretty much our passive fantasy, this weekend outstanding singer-songwriter Mike Doughty literally kicked some drunk fans out of his show in Woodstock NY. The youtube video imbedded above captures the moment. I am not sure if Mike maybe went over the edge, or if the drunks truly deserved the ejection, but at least the performers are beginning to fight back against the annoying end of basic concert civility.

Mike Doughty has two upcoming gigs in the NYC area:
December 09, 2008 Blender Theatre NYC (WRXP Holiday Show)
December 31, 2008 Maxwell’s Hoboken NJ

NYCTaper Updates: Happy Thanksgiving!

November 26, 2008
By

The NYCTaper schedule is still on the front page if you scroll down or click [here]. We still plan to attend and record those events. We also have new NYCTaper photographers who will capture several of the events listed below. More photographers are needed!

Additionally, we have added several new dates since that was posted (even more will be added — still not certain about New Year’s week). Here are the new additions:

Pylon:
December 15, 2008 Knitting Factory NYC

Of Montreal:
December 16, 2008 Music Hall of Williamsburg

The Antlers / Sharon Van Etten / Pet Ghost Project:
January 3, 2009 Cake Shop

Jonathan Segel (of Camper Van Beethoven) / Victor Krummenacher (of Camper Van Beethoven) / Sharon Van Etten / and Special Guests:
January 11, 2009 NYCTaper Presents Sunday Night at Pianos

The Annuals:
January 28, 2009 Bowery Ballroom NYC

There is also a bit of backlog on recordings captured in the recent past. These artists were recorded by NYCTaper and will appear on the site in the weeks after Thanksgiving — Naked Hearts, The Secret Life of Sofia, Treasure, and Olof Arnalds.

We also received two packages of DAT masters captured in NYC by two other tapers over the last decade. Those recordings will also appear on this site and include Belle and Sebastian, Dismemberment Plan, Neil Halstead and Iron and Wine. Those recordings should be posted on the site by the end of the year.

We will be away until Sunday. Happy Thanksgiving!

Pylon Return to NYC on December 15

November 23, 2008

Today we received great news from Pylon — an unexpected and just-announced performance in NYC in a few weeks. Pylon recently played a couple of dates on the West coast and did not have plans to return North — until now.

Pylon were so unbelievably tight when we saw them at the Mercury Lounge in November of last year, that it is not surprising that they will continue to perform.

Here are the details:

NYCTaper Back Up!

November 22, 2008
By

Apologies to our readers for the downtime yesterday, which was somewhere in the range of about 18 hours. Our host server had some kind of huge crash and took way too long to fix it.

In the interim, we kept busy. We recorded Hot Buttered Rum at Sullivan Hall on Wednesday, attended the Antlers (the recording was not usable) on Thursday, and last night we recorded The Loom and most of Rafter‘s set at Cake Shop. I will try to post at least two of those recordings today.

Tonight its off to Union Hall for an amazing bill — The Secret Life of Sofia, Jeremy Messersmith, and Naked Hearts.

Sharon Van Etten – Good News and Bad News — Village Voice, Stolen Laptop, and More Shows

Sharon Van Etten at NYCTaper CMJ Show [photo by subinev blog]

The news was bad and good for Sharon Van Etten this week. On the same day we clicked on the excellent Hooves on the Turf music blog to find that Sharon Van Etten’s laptop (with new songs!) had been stolen, we picked up the Village Voice to find Sharon glowingly and prominently featured in the profile of one of NYC’s best and most underappreciated venues — Brooklyn’s Zebulon. We spoke to Sharon about Zebulon in the NYCTaper Interview last month.

Today the good news wins out. Sharon has booked a series of upcoming gigs (tonight!), including the next NYCTaper Presents show — January 11, 2009 at Pianos. We will have a lot to report out that NYCTaper show in the near future.

Sharon Van Etten will perform the following shows:
November 20, 2008 Cornelia Street Cafe NYC
November 25, 2008 Glasslands Brooklyn
December 8, 2008 Pianos NYC
January 11, 2009 Pianos NYC (NYCTaper Presents)
