Love is All at Bowery Ballroom June 16, 2008 (Review)

Love is All was so impressive at Cake Shop that we just had to see them again before they left NYC for Sweden. We missed the Market Hotel show, but luckily managed to catch the last half of the Bowery set last night after taking a cab downtown right after Sigur Ros let out.

Arriving right before the “I Ran” cover, we heard a good thirty minutes of energy which included two encores (“Felt Tip” and “Spinning and Scratching” not on the written setlist below). The crowd was significantly more sedate than the Cake Shop crazies, and seemed to include more casual fans — those who weren’t involved enough to get a hard ticket (Cake Shop) or travel to a diy venue in Bushwick. Although she couldn’t jump into and sing among crowd from an elevated stage, Josephine nevertheless strutted and shimmied her way through the set.

Love is All will be back. They have new songs and are working on a new CD. We can’t wait.

The Weekend – What Happened and What’s Coming

June 16, 2008
By

So, after Death Cab and a near death experience on Tuesday and the long and late night with the amazing opening of the NYC Popfest on Thursday, we decided to rest on Friday the 13th.

We woke up on Saturday morning to find an email from Nick Hallett who conceived and directed the performance of Oneida‘s The Wedding at The Kitchen. He offered us an opportunity to record the Saturday night performance.

When the details were worked out, we arrived at the Kitchen early to set-up and beat the rain. The venue is this amazing art/performance space in far west Chelsea and it has an excellent sound system and crew. We recorded Oneida’s Wedding as a four-channel soundboard/Neumann mix, and the audio is so good that we have offered the master to the participants for possible release. Its that good. More details to follow.

When Oneida was over, we raced back home, changed rigs and out of the wet clothes and took the L Train over the Music Hall and Ladybug Transistor, offered now on nyctaper [HERE]. Unfortunately, the show lasted quite late and when we exited the venue our text message to ToddP was returned with a “show is over” response — in other words, sadly we missed Love is All at the Market Hotel.

Yesterday we spent the day on Governor’s Island recording over three hours of moe. Expect that recording in the next few days. Tonight we’re at Sigur Ros. Whew!

In the following days, we’ll be posting the Oh! Custer recording, Antietam at Brooklyn Public Library, moe. and Sigur Ros. Oneida will be posted if the participants do not use the master for an official release.

These days, the active NYC live music scene often offers two or three shows in a single night that I would like to experience. On Saturday night June 14, there are no less than ten events that would be great to see.

We’re going to Brooklyn to see:
Ladybug Transistor at Music Hall of Williamsburg as part of the NYC Popfest

We may make it out to Bushwick to see:
Love Is All at the Market Hotel, a ToddP concert

These excellent events we will miss:
Mission of Burma at Bowery Ballroom, performing the complete Signals Calls and Marches start to finish
REM, Modest Mouse and The National at Jones Beach
Sharon Von Etten at Union Pool
Evangelista (Carla Bozulich) at Mercury Lounge
Vampire Weekend at Central Park Summerstage
Oneida at The Kitchen, performing The Wedding start to finish
The Music Slut 3rd Anniversary Party at Pianos with Drink Up Buttercup
Rock The Harbor Festival on Staten Island

or we could just stay home and watch the Bonnaroo Webcast!

The second show is the Rooftop Concert Series on June 20 that nyctaper will record.

Today we learned of two more NYC dates for Deer Tick:
June 21 Location TBA (ToddP) with Ponytail
June 30 Southpaw Brooklyn

Ponytail is also playing the After the Jump Festival on the afternoon of June 21.

Market Hotel Legal Woes Completely Over

June 11, 2008
By

This morning in a Brooklyn courtroom, the remaining four charges against the Market Hotel were dismissed by motion of the attorney for all of the defendants. The cases arose out of the legal troubles encountered at the Showpaper benefit in February.

The first four cases were dismissed in Manhattan in May. Today’s victory closes the entire matter in favor of the Market Hotel.

Death Cab show Ends Abruptly from Death Winds!

June 10, 2008
By

We were out in Brooklyn tonight for the Death Cab For Cutie show at McCarren Pool when a massive thunder and lightning storm with intense winds came in quickly from the south. As the band worked through “The Sound of Settling”, the winds whipped up the stage backdrop and lighting stands and nearly caused a disaster. The show organizers rushed the stage and pulled the band off, and frantically asked the sellout crowd to leave the venue.  The southern skies flashed with a spectacular lightning display, and the skies opened with a massive downpour about 10 minutes later.

We captured the entire concert (slightly over an hour of music), and the ensuing mayhem at the show’s abrupt end.  Expect a recording of the music and some of the craziness on nyctaper within the next few hours.
