The Antlers Release New Free EP Thanks to Pop Tarts and After the Jump Fest

June 6, 2008
By

The Antlers will be appearing at the After the Jump Festival on June 21, an amazing festival produced by the After the Jump blog cooperative and curated by our friends at the Pop Tarts Suck Toasted blog.

In anticipation of that appearance, today The Antlers released a free EP, a three-song collection with two covers and an original song. “Sylvia (An Introduction)” is the new Antlers track that introduces listeners to the theme of Hospice — the album that is currently being recorded and is expected to be released this Fall.

nyctaper shares the enthusiasm for this outstanding band with Pop Tarts, as we have recorded The Antlers twice this year [HERE] and [HERE] and they appeared at the nyctaper Anniversary Concert.

We are particularly excited here at nyctaper for this EP because Sharon Van Etten contributes vocals to the two cover songs. We’ll be recording Sharon tonight at Pianos!

A few short moments ago, it was a nice little knock on the door from the mailman which brought the ticket for the June 16 concert by Sigur Ros at The Grand Ballroom. There have been various expressions of impatience around the web about the arrival of this ticket, but we’re happy to report that they’re in your mailman’s bag or in your hand now. See you there!

In other Sigur Ros news, the band is now accepting pre-orders for the new album in a variety of formats — everything from the $100 deluxe package, to an $8 320mp3 download. Visit the Preorder page [HERE] for details.

We were pleased to receive an email this morning with permission to record the Rooftop Film Concert Series event this Friday night. As we posted a few weeks ago, Dirty on Purpose will open the series with a set this Friday night June 6 at 8:30pm — prior to the screening of a set of excellent independent short films.

Dirty on Purpose

The early set time of this event will also allow us to record Sharon Van Etten‘s set at Pianos at midnight on Friday. As we posted last week, Sharon is also going to be performing at the Rooftop Series later this month on June 21. With Rooftop permission now secured, we’ll be there too.

Finally, we have just emailed John from Deer Tick with a permission request to record their Rooftop set on June 20 which will be early enough for us to record the late night set at Sullivan Hall by Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey.

Pink Floyd Offer to Reunite at Glastonbury Rejected by Promoter!?

June 2, 2008
By

David Gilmour‘s proposal to perform the entire Dark Side of the Moon album as the headlining act at this year’s Glastonbury Festival has apparently been rejected by the Festival’s organizer, it was reported in today’s edition of the British newspaper The Sun.

As Pink Floyd fans are aware, Gilmour has not performed Dark Side since the final Water-less Pink Floyd concerts in 1994. It has been Roger Waters who has performed Dark Side of the Moon in its entirety as the second set of his concerts throughout the 2006, 2007, and 2008 tours. About a month ago, there were reports from insiders that a tour team had been formed to explore future dates for a Pink Floyd reunion, and as a result this Glastonbury offer is widely believed to have been planned as the initial performance by a reunited band.

In other more positive Pink Floyd news, David Gilmour signed on last week to join in Ron Geesin‘s orchestral presentation of the Atom Heart Mother album.

At Antietam’s Brooklyn Public Library performance this afternoon, Ira Kaplan from Yo La Tengo sat in for the entire set on keyboards.

Due to the torrential rain, the performance originally scheduled for the steps of the library was moved indoor to the auditorium. Unfortunately, we were unable to attend, but according to the Antietam MySpace blog, there is video of the performance. Joly?

Awesome Color – New Video and Europe Dates

May 26, 2008
By

We saw the premiere of this video at the Glasslands CD Release party, but today Awesome Color have released the video for “Eyes of Light” from their new CD Electric Aborigines on Ecstatic Peace Records.

The video has the feel of an early 70s BBC music broadcast, which fits the Brit-Prog influence in the song. Awesome Color is in Europe for the next two months, with headlining gigs, and shows opening for Dinosaur Jr. and Black Mountain. Check their MySpace page for dates.

Sharon Van Etten also playing Rooftop Films Series

Sharon Van Etten is the haunting angelic-voiced singer who as we posted yesterday, will appear as a guest vocalist on the upcoming Antlers record. Sharon will be performing several gigs in the NYC area over the next few weeks, including one of the Rooftop Films series gigs. On June 21, her rooftop gig will be on at the The Old American Can Factory in Gowanus [HERE] prior to the screening of the film “The Women of Brukman”.

Sharon’s other upcoming NYC dates include:
May 29 2008 9:00 Zebulon Brooklyn
June 6 2008 8:00 Pianos NYC
June 10 2008 8:00 Union Hall Brooklyn
June 14 2008 8:00 Union Pool Brooklyn

Sharon will tour the East coast in July — check her MySpace page for more dates.

nyctaper has received permission to record the June 25 date at Zebulon.

Deer Tick has 2 Upcoming NYC dates

Deer Tick has just been added to the Rooftop Films concert series where they will perform on June 20. The Rooftop Films series screens independent films in outdoor locations throughout the City in the Summer. Deer Tick will perform at the “romantic short films” night which is listed on the site at “Lower East Side”, but we have learned is actually going to be 350 Grand Street between Essex and Ludlow.

This is the same series that Dirty on Purpose will open on June 6, which we posted about a couple of weeks ago. We have the permission of Dirty on Purpose to record that performance, but we are waiting to learn if the Rooftop people will allow recording. We expect to seek John/Deer Tick’s permission if the Rooftop people will permit, as John permitted our recording at Mercury Lounge in March.

John McCauley of Deer Tick will also perform solo at Bowery Ballroom, opening the Jaymay/AA Bondy show on June 10.
