Acidjack’s Top Ten Musical Moments of 2009

January 2, 2010

Acidjack Reports:
Before I delve into this further, I want to thank the host of this site for allowing me to share my recordings here and contribute to the nyctaper mission. I started taping shows back when I was 15 years old with a cheap Aiwa analog recorder and fell in love with this hobby right away. Various life events intruded, so I took a hiatus starting in 2000, which I am happy to say ended this year. If it were not for the encouragement of nyctaper and other veteran tapers who encouraged me to get back into this despite the new technological hurdles, I would have missed out on what has been a fantastic experience for me since I started back. The music industry has seen a ton of setbacks this decade. Sites like nyctaper are changing the way that fans think about music, helping to promote live shows and the venues that bring out good bands, and hopefully, drawing attention to rising and underappreciated local artists.

On to my top 10. Just a quick caveat, since nothing on tape (even an nyctaper recording) quite compares to the live experience, I am mostly focusing on shows that I actually attended (or at least, tried to)!

10. Thee Oh Sees, “Enemy Destruct” Mercury Lounge, New York, 10/8/2009.
One of the greatest pleasures for me as a taper is going to see a band I know very little about, discovering they are freaking great and coming home to congratulate myself that I recorded the proceedings. Thee Oh Sees are a west coast band that doesn’t see as much print time out here, but if they keep opening performances the way they did back in October at Mercury, that will change. This is one of those songs that gets your body moving, that puts you in fifth gear, that reminds you that one of rock’s greatest gifts to us is its ability to provoke unbridled exuberance. Listen to this thing. I dare you to sit still.

9. Vivian Girls, “Damaged” Bowery Ballroom, New York, 5/11/2009.
“After a complete cycle through the hype machine,” as this site eloquently put it, the Girls put on a clutch performance at Bowery that ended with the band members switching roles for a nine minute version of this song. If anything else needed to be said, this performance proved that this band was a lot more than just hype.

8. Mogwai, “Mogwai Fear Satan” Music Hall of Williamsburg, Brooklyn 4/29/2009.
Besides being one of my favorite recordings of the year, this song in particular shows Mogwai’s soft/loud dynamic at its peak, an eleven-minute opus of tension and release. Fans should take note that a compilation of these MHOW performances are being released as a live DVD set. I am honored that the band actually asked to hear my recordings to help them decide what to include!

7. The Meat Puppets, “Oh Me” Mercury Lounge, New York 6/11/2009.
The only reason I ever got into taping was the band Nirvana. They will always be my favorite band, and, as I never recorded them, they will always matter to me more than any band I record. As with a lot of fans, Nirvana introduced me to the Meat Puppets, and in particular, this beautiful song (it even played at my wedding). Seeing this performed live, by the original artists, a band that has battled addiction problems and prevailed, showed me exactly what caused Kurt Cobain to select this song for Nirvana’s famous “MTV Unplugged” performance and made me wish that he, too, had prevailed.

6. Polvo, “Beggar’s Bowl” Bell House, Brooklyn, 9/24/2009.
Sadly, Polvo did not allow us to release this stellar soundboard/audience matrix recording because they did not feel their performance was good enough. I respectfully disagree. Polvo’s return was one of many welcome developments this year. Their sound continues to evolve and expand (one buddy of mine even went so far as to call them a “jam band”), and this song, from their new record, In Prism is my favorite of all of their new material. We hope that Polvo will consider allowing nyctaper to actually record and post a future show!

5. The Mountain Goats, “1 Samuel 15:23” Webster Hall, New York 12/1/2009.
I had planned to record this show as well, but work intervened (funny how it can do that). Of course, my non-presence was totally irrelevant as nyctaper captured an amazing recording. Something about this song is really special to me as much as any Darnielle song can be, its a bit epic in its way, and this searing performance blows away the recorded version.

4. Maserati, “Show Me the Season”Bowery Ballroom, New York 9/28/2009.
By the third song in their opening set for Mono, I had come to grips with the fact that, holy s—, this band Maserati has a really fantastic drummer. That man, Jerry Fuchs, who also worked the kit for the Juan Maclean, died earlier this year in a highly publicized freak accident. His death is a great loss for the New York music scene. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends.

3. Dirty Projectors, “Stillness is the Move” Bowery Ballroom, New York, 11/22/2009.
I feel somewhat bad choosing the band’s “hit” for this rather than the night’s also-stellar closer of “Knotty Pine” with a surprise guest appearance by David Byrne. But, I think this live performance of this band’s best-known song sealed it for me as to why they will continue to be important for a long time — their musicality is simply unparalleled among current indie artists. Watching this difficult track performed so effortlessly at the band’s tour-closing show was a special moment.

2. Nine Inch Nails, “Pinion/Somewhat Damaged” Terminal 5, New York, 8/26/2009.
I will be the first to admit, I was basically done with NIN when The Fragile came out. As with so many projects during that era (see, e.g., Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness) the 2-disc album had too much filler and too many poorly directed ideas. Seeing NIN open two of their “farewell” NYC shows with this song, I became a believer again. It was hot and crowded as hell at T5 this night, and nyctaper and I were recording side by side. As soon as this song began, the crowd went nuts. At times, we weren’t sure if we were going to be crushed. For what its worth, the Bowery Ballroom performance was better, but to be honest, my recording of that show was not nearly up to the quality of this one. Here you can hear the fury, feel the energy, and get a reminder of why these guys were one of the most important bands of the past 20 years.

1. The Secret Machines, “The Road Leads Where Its Led” Knitting Factory, Brooklyn, 12/23/2009. I felt like I had to pick this song because it embodies so much of what 2009 was about. This was a very, very hard year for a lot of people, including many of our readers. This song closed out a show where a three-man band’s guitarist could not make the show due to inclement weather in Chicago. Rather than bail on the fans that came out to see them on a freezing night two days before Christmas, the remaining two members of TSM improvised, with bassist/vocalist Brandon Curtis taking on guitar duties, leaving Josh Garza, the drummer, as the entire backbeat. Not only did they not bitch and moan about it, but they treated it as an opportunity to rework new material and present it in a new way. Well, it worked. This type of attitud — of putting the people first and persevering despite setbacks — is exactly what I believe will bring this country and New York, a brighter, happier 2010.

Happy New Year to all,
acidjack

NYCTaper Top 10 Concerts of 2009

December 25, 2009
By

[photo courtesy of Mike at 50Showsat50 blog]

Today we present the annual NYCTaper Top 10 Concerts of the Year, a totally subjective list of the shows we saw in 2009 that we felt were the highest quality performances of the many we saw. I estimate that I attended approximately 120 shows this year, up quite a bit from last year.

1. Wilco: July 15, 2009 Dutchess County Stadium, Wappingers Falls NY
That NYCTaper’s concert of the year actually took place a couple of hours north of NYC should say something about this show. One of the world’s best bands on a wonderful summer evening in the country played over two and half hours of superb music. This is also one of the most popular downloads on the site this year.

2. Animal Collective: January 21, 2009 Bowery Ballroom NYC
The day after Merriweather Post Pavillion was released, AC performed an intimate show at one of NYC’s best venues. The sound and performance were quite amazing, and based on the number of downloads (more than 23,000) of this recording, I guess we did pretty well too.

3. The Antlers: December 15, 2009 Bowery Ballroom NYC
This was a very special night for the band and they delivered the performance of their lives (thus far), with absolutely breathtaking versions of the Hospice material. As the culmination of years of hopes and dreams and expectations, this night was perhaps the most rewarding experience of the year for nyctaper.

4. The Feelies: September 13, 2009 Southpaw Brooklyn
This Sunday night show was the third show of the Feelies three-show “tour” in support of the re-issues of their first two classic albums. On this night, after a lukewarm first set, the Feelies returned to the stage and delivered one of the most remarkable sets we saw all year — one that included an unprecedented five returns to the stage for the performance of ten encores.

5. The Mountain Goats: December 2, 2009 Bell House Brooklyn
On the final night of yet another highly successful tour, the Mountain Goats performed at the outstanding and intimate venue Bell House. John delivered the goods, too, with a ton of older material, a rare cover, and three returns to the stage for five encores.

6. Iron and Wine: May 19, 2009 Abrons Arts Center NYC
A solo Sam Beam show is a special event. A solo Sam show in a classic 100-seat capacity theatre on the Lower East Side is yet another. This night was special for all the right reasons — an intimate performance of fan-chosen material by an artist of unique gifts, including his better-than-the-original cover of the Flaming Lips “Waiting for Superman”.

7. The Rest: June 19, 2009 Monster Island Basement Brooklyn
The superb young Canadian band made its first trip to NYC and absolutely floored the entire crowd lucky enough to be in the basement that night. As they performed primarily material from the album of the year candidate Everyone All at Once, the musical proficiency and songwriting skills of this soon-to-be-huge band were breathtaking.

8. Steve Wynn and The Miracle Three: June 27, 2009 Bell House Brooklyn
On this special night, Steve took a look back twenty years and performed the classic Dream Syndicate album The Medicine Show from start to finish. The performance was remarkable for its energy and commitment. The band carried the energy into a raging encore set that was only completed due to a curfew.

9. The Decemberists: June 10, 2009 Radio City Music Hall NYC
It was not enough for the Decemberist to perform their excellent new album The Hazards of Love in its entirety at this show. The band then returned for a second set of career-spanning material before giving the crowd the truly wonderful gift of a dead-on cover of REM’s “Begin the Begin” with Peter Buck on guitar.

10. Natureboy: November 7, 2009 Union Pool Brooklyn
Sara Kermanshahi is a singer-songwriter of immense talents. I expect we’ll hear a lot from her in 2010. On this particular night, she shined with such intensity that we were literally moved to emotion — and in particular by her cover of Nico’s “I’ll Keep It With Mine”.

Coming soon, NYCTaper’s top five NYC venues of 2009 and our top ten individual live performances of 2009.

I am floored by this particular award. PC Magazine has selected its Top 50 blogs of 2009 and NYCTaper has been recognized among that group. What makes this really special is that the group is not just music blogs, but all blogs on the web. PC Magazine is arguably the most influential publication ever to cover computers, having existed since 1982.

Sharon Van Etten and Natureboy at Union Pool on Saturday (Nov 7)

November 4, 2009
By

Its been far too long since we last saw the amazing Sharon Van Etten perform live. Our readers will remember that she absolutely awed the packed upstairs room at Cake Shop for our 2008 CMJ show. Sharon has been riding a wave of success since the Spring release of her debut album Because I Was in Love, and has been touring around the world with the likes of Kyp Malone, Beirut and Great Lake Swimmers. On Saturday night (Nov 7), she will headline Union Pool for a show presented by the excellent website Kevchino. Also on the bill is a performer who we have been meaning to see for quite some time, the singer-songwriter Sara Kermanshahi who performs under the moniker Natureboy.

Tickets are still on sale for this show and are available [here].

If you have ever gone to an all-ages concert in Brooklyn, you know Showpaper. Its the newpaper that basically lists for you every all-ages show that is scheduled in our area. The paper is free, the staff are all volunteers, and the service provided is incredibly helpful. I had the pleasure of working with the Showpaper staff at their benefit this past Saturday and recording all 10 bands that played the event. Real Estate was posted yesterday, and over the next week or so, all of the music will become available to our readers.

Now is our chance to thank Showpaper for the wonderful music that they are responsible for bringing here and all over NYC.

CMJ Day One – Live Blog

[Greycoats]
I am upstairs at Pianos watching the Greycoats to start. They are a jangle-pop band from Minneapolis, under the same umbrella as our old friend Jeremy Messersmith. The guys are also completely without attitude and have the wonderfully fresh midwest charm. A definite see-again band, they are playing a few more shows this week, including a night time showcase at Spike Hill tonight at 10 pm. Greycoats go on directly before Unicycle Loves You, who are also playing the NYCTaper CMJ Show on Thursday.

[Home Video]
Next up downstairs at Pianos is Home Video, a Brooklyn band whose heavily 80’s-influenced music recalls New Order and Pet Shop Boys later material. Off to Cake Shop.

[Sisters]
At Cake Shop, the Brooklyn lo-fi band Sisters is a guitar/drums duo who make up for the lack of other instruments with a ton of energy and a very conspicuous stack of multiple Fender amps. Fun and loud.

[Motel Motel]
Next up downstairs at Cake Shop was nyctaper-favorite Motel Motel who attracted the first large crowd of the day for their unique brand of urban alt-country that blew me away in April. We will see them next on Thursday at the NYCTaper CMJ Show.

[Fanfarlo]
This photo is grainy and distant because that’s as far up as I could get for Fanfarlo at Pianos. The downstairs room was completely packed, some people did not even make it in the door. I believe that this band has now been crowned as the first official buzz band of CMJ ’09. We’ll see them again tonight at Music Hall under less packed conditions.

[Blood Warrior]
The final band I saw at today’s afternoon shows is the relatively new band of O’Death’s Greg Jamie, Blood Warrior, a band that impressed us so much at the After The Jump Fest in August. We are excited to see them again at the NYCTaper CMJ show on Thursday.

…more to come…this week…
