CMJ Begins! Live Blogging, NYCTaper CMJ Show News

October 20, 2009
By

In a few minutes I’ll be off to pick up the badge and begin the week of 1000 shows. This afternoon, I’ll be at the Music Slut CMJ Party at Pianos and the Pop Tarts CMJ Show at Cake Shop and live blogging from both. No recordings (that will be tonight) but plenty of photos, reviews and updates — if it all works out.

The NYCTaper CMJ show, at Bruar Falls all day Thursday afternoon (Oct 22) is getting some nice press and blog recognition. We told you about the Village Voice, OhMyRockness, 27/Seven Brooklyn and last.fm recommendations/listings. Today Ear Farm posted their comprehensive CMJ Guide, and the NYCTaper show is listed on the Thursday schedule. Also, Deli Magazine this year returns with their “marathon runners“, and one of this year’s runners Nancy will spend much of her Thursday afternoon with us at Bruar Falls.

Finally, I set up an Invite page on Facebook for our CMJ show, with all the details and all the fancy interactive stuff that Facebook offers [HERE].

Unicycle Loves You: Venus Zine Band of the Month + Playing CMJ

September 30, 2009
By

Unicycle Loves You is an eclectic psychedelic pop band from Chicago. Their self-titled debut on Highwheel Records gained the band quite a bit of buzz and resulted in gigs opening for the likes of Fiery Furnaces, Cymbals Eat Guitars, and Awesome Color. This week Unicycle Loves You was awarded Venus Zine’s Band of The Month with a neat cover story and band bio.

We are extremely happy to have Unicycle Loves You as the opening band for the NYCTaper 2009 CMJ Day Party at Bruar Falls on Thursday Oct 22. They will start the show with a set at 12:30pm. Get out early and don’t miss this outstanding band.

The new video for their song “Justine”:

Of Montreal: “Fashun Weak” Video + Upcoming Tour Documentary with NYCTaper Audio

September 29, 2009
By

This video is produced by the excellent people over at Eikon Productions and captures the crazy night at Santos Party House when Of Montreal performed an intimate late night set (Fluxblog review here). NYCTaper provided live Of Montreal audio for this video short. We also recorded Of Montreal at Terminal 5 on the next night [here].

Eikon is also the production company behind the soon-to-be-released Of Montreal Tour Documentary which captures the wild performances on their Fall 2008 tour — including the infamous Roseland show. NYCTaper audio is also used in that tour DVD for which we will receive an audio credit. Thanks Eikon!

Odds & Ends: Feelies T-Shirt Concert Winner, Upcoming Recordings, CMJ

September 24, 2009
By

The NYCTaper/In Sound contest to win a Feelies shirt is over, and the winner of the t-shirt is nyctaper reader Jordan Jackson. In Sound will mail out the t-shirt this week.

We have many recordings to post this week, along with many to attend. The Decemberists show at Terminal 5 was recorded by two correspondents and I am in the process of editing the raw wav files to offer the best possible recording. I recorded The Baseball Project/Minus 5/Steve Wynn IV show last night at Bowery and will post it as soon as I can get time with the computer! It was about two and half hours of music. But I will be at Polvo tonight, Yo La Tengo tomorrow, and The Rest on Saturday, so the earliest to be able to expect some new recordings is Saturday afternoon (earliest) to Sunday night.

We are also in the process of adding a ton of new Fall show to the schedule, so expect a new “Upcoming Events” post very soon.

Finally, the NYCTaper CMJ show is completely confirmed. Eight bands are on the bill, and every single one of them is fantastic. We are incredibly excited about the quality of this bill and will formally announce it in the next few days!

In celebration of the 10th Anniversary of InSound, designer Mike Perry created ten different t-shirt images for 10 different classic bands. The Feelies are one of the ten bands, and nyctaper was selected exclusively to give away one free t-shirt to one of our lucky readers.

The winner will be announced here at nyctaper on September 24.

Emanuel and The Fear at Joe’s Pub – Tomorrow (Friday) Night!

September 3, 2009
By

We posted about this in our Upcoming section, but didn’t give this show the attention it deserves. We have been meaning to catch Emanuel and The Fear for a while, and this Friday (Sept 4) at Joe’s Pub we’ll finally get the chance. Emanuel Ayvas has an amazingly rich baritone and he has surrounded himself (“The Fear”) with 10 excellent musicians on guitar/bass/drums, along with horns and strings — what L Magazine described as a “rock orchestra” when they awarded Emanuel and The Fear with one of these year’s “8 NYC Bands You Need to Hear“.

Charity Concert at Bell House on Wednesday

August 10, 2009
By

Jonny Leather offers another benefit concert on Wednesday night August 12 at Bell House. This event is a charity show to benefit the Ronald McDonald House — specifically the funds raised by this concert will be used to purchase musical instruments for the children at the local McDonald House.

We will not be in NYC to record this event, as we had Jonny’s last benefit show with My Teenage Stride and The Drums. However, the band who we are most disappointed to miss at this show — Hooray For Earth — we hope to catch in September at Southpaw.

Along with their performance at this show, Hooray For Earth offers a new mp3 download for the cause:
Hooray For Earth – Surrounded By Your Friends (Miádis Remix)
“This is a brand new, never-before-heard track”
