Blitzen Trapper announced earlier today a series of US tour dates that covers much of October. The tour will bring the band East for the first time since this past February, when they performed at Bowery Ballroom and Music Hall of Williamsburg on back to back nights. We recorded both of those shows.

On October 11, Blitzen Trapper returns to the Bowery Ballroom. Tickets go on sale for that show on Friday, August 14.

Forest Fire CD Release Show at Union Hall on August 10

August 5, 2009
By

Last year we posted about Forest Fire’s excellent new self-released album. In the interim, the album was picked up and will be released by Infinite Best Recordings on August 18. There will be a release party this Monday night, August 10 at Union Hall hosted by our friends at the Chocolate Bobka music blog.

Here’s what Forest Fire has to say about the show:

Infinite Best Record Release Party
hey all,
we are hitting the road soon In honor of our record Survival out August 18th on the brand new Infinite Best label! we’ve got a few in the flesh dates lined up, the most important of which is our Chocolate Bobka presents record release party at Union Hall on August 10th which we are doing our best to make as crazy as possible. Apparently there will be cookies, Survival on Vinyl and an overall sense of danger in the air. Not to mention HOLOGRAM and Shilpa Ray. Be there or be square.

We have added this show as our last recording venture before the nyctaper vacation (August 11-25), so we will be there!

Anniversary Celebration of “Double Nickels” at Bowery Poetry Club with Mike Watt

July 22, 2009
By

This year marks the 25th Anniversary of one of rock music’s undoubtedly greatest albums, the Minutemen’s double lp Double Nickels on The Dime. In the tragically short career of the Minutemen, this release stands as the high water mark. Bowery Poetry Club is having a celebration of the album’s anniversary with a special concert this Saturday night. Mike Watt, bass player extraordinaire of the Minutemen, will be the special guest.

Here are the details from Bowery Poetry Club:

On Saturday, July 25, 2009, at 8 pm, we celebrate the 25th anniversary of the release of this incredible album. Be prepared for the extreme unusual, with spoken word renditions of songs on the album, musical tributes, rare videos and recordings, and special musical guest stars, including the bassist for the Minutemen, Mike Watt.
Performers include Michael T. Fournier (author of Double Nickels on the Dime (33-1/3 press), New Jersey experimental indie rock band Tweede Kamer, Minutemen cover band Pillowman (from Worcester, MA), Corndogs (from Bethpage, PA), mystery punk bassist The Bass Player from Hand Job, electro-poetic mistress Jackie Sheeler, Jazz piano cabaret duo Peter Carlaftes & Kayo, and punkster poet Kat Georges (author of Punk Rock Journal).

Wilco at Coney Island – Written Setlist and Show Recording Coming Soon

July 14, 2009
By

Above is the actual setlist for tonight’s Wilco show, donated by Wilco’s soundman Stan — who did a superb job at tonight’s baseball stadium show at Coney Island’s Keyspan Park.

What is not noted on the setlist is the mindbending joining-forces of Wilco and Yo La Tengo for the most out there version of “Spiders” we have ever seen.

We recorded the show with the four-microphone rig from inside the soundboard area. The long train ride home offered an opportunity to listen on headphones and it really came out quite excellent, despite the pitfalls (wind and distance) of an outdoor event. The recording is coming to nyctaper ASAP. We also recorded Yo La Tengo’s opening set and that will follow shortly thereafter.

The Feelies at Southpaw Sept 13 – Tickets on Sale

July 11, 2009
By

Unlike last year’s July 4th run of shows, this year we missed the Feelies at Maxwell’s due to holiday travel. Fortunately, again like last year’s September shows, the Feelies will perform in NYC on September 13 at the relatively small Brooklyn venue Southpaw.

Tickets are now on sale for this show [here] and will likely go quickly.

Benefit Concert at Bell House on July 22 with The Drums and My Teenage Stride

July 8, 2009
By

This show is yet another benefit concert produced by Jonny Leather with an excellent bill of bands. My Teenage Stride have been burning up NYC for two years now, and we have somehow had the misfortune of missing them each time. That will be cured on July 22 at Bell House.

The Drums are a brand new band who has come roaring out of the gate, having received rave reviews from their recent NYC Popfest and Annex residency shows from the likes of Oh My Rockness and NY Press. This show is a benefit for Empty Cages, a primarily feline-oriented NYC animal rescue organization.

Benefit Show for Jon Wiley of Spacecamp – July 9 at The Shank

June 22, 2009
By

WE ARE THE WILEY: A Benefit for Jon Wiley

A circle of Brooklyn-based friends have joined together to throw a benefit for beloved, local musician, Jon Wiley. We Are the Wiley: A Benefit Concert for Jon Wiley will feature Adam Green, Lightspeed Champion, DJ Johnny Tropical, and Chairlift at The Shank an art space and concert venue in Williamsburg, Brooklyn on Thursday, July 9, 2009 at 8PM.

On March 5, 2009, professional guitarist, bassist, and keyboardist, Jon Wiley awoke without feeling or mobility in his arms and legs. He was subsequently diagnosed with multiple sclerosis and incurred more than $30,000 worth of medical bills for his week-long hospital stay. After a lengthy recovery process, Jon has regained most feeling in his limbs and has gone on in recent months to record and perform with Lightspeed Champion, Adam Green, and his solo project, SpaceCamp. However, he is still without the means to afford his own healthcare.

Join us to celebrate the extraordinary talent of Jon Wiley, and raise funds to cover the expenses of a musician in need. This is a concrete opportunity to help a friend who, like so many artists and musicians in the United States, lack affordable healthcare. Jon’s story highlights the importance of healthcare for every person and the value of living each day to the fullest.
