Wilco August 13, 2008 McCarren Pool – Flac and MP3 Downloads

Wilco has spoiled its fans for years — long energetic shows, consistently excellent albums, interesting collaborations — they are the finest working American band. Wednesday night at McCarren Pool, the Brooklyn fans were treated to a special evening of perhaps the most complete Wilco performance NYC has ever seen. After 27 songs, eleven encores, and two-and-a-half hours of music that covered all aspects of their career, there could be no gripe from any of the 5000 guests save for the most petulant, fickle or inexperienced concert-goers.

The setlist was a complete review of Wilco’s music — of the first 12 numbers there was at least one song from 7 different albums. All the classics were performed, along with a nice selection of rare old chestnuts (“Far Far Away”, “Kingpin”) and some obscure tracks (“Blood of the Lamb”, “Pieholden Suite”). The band also added a trio of horns (“Total Pro Horns”) for this tour who added an interesting dimension to several older numbers. Jeff Tweedy’s voice has fully recovered since his surgery two years ago, and it seems to be completely back to its original strength. Jeff threw quite a few playful verbal ribs at the crowd, although he refrained from throwing actual food into the audience.

We recorded from directly in front of the soundboard in the center. While the packed crowd was a bit too chatty around us, the music was expertly mixed by Wilco’s talented sound crew and they provided us with a superb sound capture. Enjoy!

Monotract June 21, 2008 After The Jump – Flac and MP3 Downloads

Monotract were one of the “older” bands at the After The Jump Festival, as they have been recording and performing their compelling experimental “noise-wave” for a decade. In 2006, they caught the attention of Sonic Youth’s Thurston Moore, who signed them to Ecstatic Peace. Thurston also performed with Monotract at SXSW in 2007.

The late afternoon performance at After The Jump seemed a bit rushed due to time constraints, so that Monotract only played for 20 minutes. However, in that time frame they displayed the frenetic energy that has served them well for a decade of accolades. This is the matrix mix from the Galapagos stage and the sound recording is excellent. Enjoy!

Sharon Van Etten August 3, 2008 Cake Shop – Flac and MP3 Downloads

At Cake Shop on Sunday night, Sharon Van Etten opened her headlining set to an enthusiastic crowd with a new song we believe is called “Whoa!”, and contains the refrain “oh, slow down”. Sharon could well be singing about how fast so many aspects of her career are moving. The very next day after Cake Shop, Sharon began another tour, this time with Festival, Bowerbirds and others, that runs through the end of August and covers the South and Midwest. The exciting date on the tour is Sharon’s appearance at the 47th Annual legendary Philadelphia Folk Festival on August 16. She has also booked an appearance at an official CMJ showcase in October, with more details to follow.

We recorded Sharon’s final NYC appearance of the summer from the upfront location at Cake Shop that we have used in the past. Unfortunately, the air conditioning at Cake Shop was broken, and the room was ventilated with two rather loud electric rotating fans. The recording has a consistent hum of the fans in the background. Otherwise, its an intimate recording of a outstanding performer. Enjoy!

The National August 4, 2008 Summerstage – Flac and MP3 Downloads

One night after their excellent gig at Lollapalooza in Chicago, and one day before they will fly to Norway to begin a tour of Europe, The National made a pit stop in the middle of New York City and performed an outstanding set at Central Park Summerstage tonight. Despite all the travel, the show was quite energetic from the start, as “Brainy” and “Secret Meeting” set the tone for a 90-minute set of The National at full power. The middle of the set featured some rare nuggets, including “The Geese Of Beverly Road”, and the set closing was top notch. Matt Berninger was so over the top during “Mr. November” that he pulled his microphone cord out of the jack more than once. The band seemed to be enjoying themselves and expressed disappointment that the set was over at the curfew.

We recorded from the perfect location at Summerstage with our best mobile rig. We thought we had captured an outstanding sound quality performance of The National at BAM in February, but frankly this recording is a significant improvement even over that excellent recording. We “nailed it” tonight. Enjoy!

Fiasco June 21, 2008 After the Jump Fest – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Show Tomorrow and Tour

Fiasco are young, bold, and on the move. In May, the proto-punk/speed-metal kids from Brooklyn signed with Impose Records, in June they headlined the Galapagos stage at After The Jump Fest, this week they are running away with the voting for Deli Magazine band of the month, in August they will tour the East Coast in support of their upcoming release, Native Canadians, which drops this October, and on October 24 Fiasco will play the Panache CMJ showcase at Knitting Factory. Tomorrow night, Tuesday August 5, the Fiasco tour kicks off with a gig at the Market Hotel.

Back in June, we recorded a small portion of the Fiasco set at After the Jump. We offer this ten minute portion to give readers a taste of the intensity of this excellent band. This recording was captured with the same rig as all previous bands from this stage. Enjoy!

The Forms June 21, 2008 After The Jump Fest – Flac and MP3 Downloads

The Forms unique melodic post-shoegaze songs translate well in an outdoor Summer setting. Their performance at the After The Jump Festival in June was well received but unfortunately, they had to split the audience with the concurrent amazing indoor performance by Ponytail. When we last saw and recorded The Forms it was last Summer in an opening slot for The National in the rain at the Seaport. The setlist at After the Jump was primarily material from their excellent Fall of 2007 release of The Forms (Rebel Music), and the band appeared more mature and confident than last year.

We recorded this set from the identical location and equipment as the Pela recording. The quality is quite excellent. Enjoy!

Matmos July 18, 2008 Le Poisson Rouge – Flac and MP3 Downloads

Last night in Chicago, Matmos concluded their tour in support of the new CD Supreme Balloon. Last week, the tour came through NYC for two shows at Le Poisson Rouge, the first night of which we were fortunate to experience. If the virtual pioneers of modern electronic music can be said to have “departed” from their art, then their new CD composed entirely with synthesizers would be Matmos‘ new direction. In the live setting however, our wizards were back together with their gadgetry, as the opening two numbers were “experiments” with a theremin and with a computer-created “psychic”. If there is anything predictable about a Matmos performance — and last Friday was no exception — its that the audience will leave the venue entertained and amazed by the experience.

We recorded this outing at LPR from the floor area below the soundboard. We were centrally located among the many PA speakers strategically placed around the superb sounding venue, and as a result captured a fine full spectrum recording. The only flaw is the noise from the bar and its patrons during quiet moments. Enjoy!

Many thanks to Matmos for permission to record and for the setlist.

Freedy Johnston July 25, 2008 Maxwell’s – Flac and MP3 Downloads

July 28, 2008
By

Freedy Johnston performed his classic album Can You Fly on Friday night at Maxwell’s and brought along a cast of all-star friends in support. The original co-producer of the album, legendary bassist Graham Maby played on about half the songs, and the uber-guitarist Dave Schramm played pedal steel on a handful of numbers. Longtime Freedy collaborator Kevin Salem provided the primary lead guitar work, and the rhythmic backbone was drummer Linda Pitmon (also of the Miracle 3), and versatile bassist Jared Nickerson.

In 1992, Can You Fly established Freedy Johnston as a premiere songwriter and performer. The years have not tarnished his abilities at all, and in fact Freedy is significantly more at ease with the audience than when he first appeared on the scene in the early 90’s. The performance on Friday was a faithful rendition of the album and proved its value in surviving the test of time. For the final two encores, Freedy was joined by Steve Wynn, and while the Blue Oyster Cult cover was fairly goofy and sloppy, the band’s run through Dylan’s “Outlaw Blues” was quite inspired.

We recorded from the exact rig as the Steve Wynn set. The quality of this recording is somewhat compromised by an extremely chatty crowd, which contained a group of rude people at the bar area who were impatiently waiting for the late show. Other than the chatter, this is a superb matrix mix. Enjoy!

Mark Knopfler July 23, 2008 Central Park – Flac Download

July 27, 2008

As the old adage says, without the rain, there would be no rainbow. When we canceled our outing to see Mark Knopfler in Central Park on Wednesday, the forecast called for the skies to open and at least an inch of rain to fall. Two tapers with more courage than I did attend the show and report that the rain held off almost exactly for the period of the concert. Knopfler went on a little early (before 8 p.m.), and the skies literally opened five minutes after his performance was over.

While we are extremely disappointed to have missed this show, we are quite fortunate to have a recording to offer our readers — the legendary taper Scott Brown has generously offered to permit nyctaper to host the 16-bit flac files of his superb recording. Odds are that if you have collected the highest quality unofficial live recordings offered in the NYC area in the last 10 years, you have more than one Scott Brown recording in your collection.

Scott’s mobile recording rig contains the same microphones as nyctaper (DPA 402X series) but his recorder is superior, as he captured with the pro-quality Sound Devices 722 digital recorder. He recorded Knopfler from the prime location and the quality of this recording is absolutely phenomenal. Enjoy!

Steve Wynn & The Miracle 3 July 25, 2008 Maxwell’s – Flac and MP3 Downloads

July 27, 2008
By

The Dream Syndicate

“Welcome to 1983!” was Steve Wynn‘s facetious introduction last night before he and his current band The Miracle 3 performed the entire classic album The Days of Wine and Roses from Steve’s previous band The Dream Syndicate. Ultimately, the return to 1983 was not entirely accurate. The twenty-five years have given Wynn the maturity and perspective to perform the album — the title of which refers to the fleeting nature of time — with a sense of purpose and direction. Technically the performance was top notch, with all instruments tight and focused at the proper moments and loose and relaxed when the band opened up to flesh out the songs. Of particular note was the jam in “Halloween” that reached an energetic crescendo, and the closing title track where Steve brought the band down to silence before ending the song with a fury. We anticipated that this performance would be special, but Steve Wynn & The Miracle 3 exceeded all of our expectations.

We recorded with the matrix mix we have used for each of our recordings at Maxwell’s this year. The Neumann microphones were mounted at the front of the soundboard booth and raised to eight feet, and were mixed with a feed from the board. The results are absolutely outstanding. We are extremely pleased to have captured this historical performance with a special recording. Enjoy!

Many thanks to Steve Wynn for permission to record this performance and for his invitation to the soundcheck. The quality of this recording is a tribute to this artist.
