Gov’t Mule: June 7, 2014 Mountain Jam (Hunter, NY)

Guitarist Warren Haynes is a busy man, playing in multiple iterations of Grateful Dead-related bands (including the recent Phil Lesh and Friends that we documented), The Allman Brothers, and of course, Gov’t Mule. On top of all that, Warren continues to play an integral role in the Mountain Jam festival that he founded, where Mule can be counted on for a spectacle of a Saturday set. This year’s version was three and half hours of guitar pyrotechnics and a host of especially inspired covers. Along with an encore of three consecutive Doors songs, we got to see Mule’s version of the song that made Radiohead famous, “Creep”. Even if Haynes’ vocals and persona don’t convey the sense of self-loathing and alienation that Thom Yorke does so effortlessly, Mule’s version was nonetheless a notable one. The set also echoed recent Mule Mountain Jam successes, with a fiery rendition of “Brighter Days”, which kicked off Mountain Jam VIII (that set here), and last year’s set opener, “Broke Down On the Brazos” (that set here). As is also a Mule tradition, the band was joined by a slew of special guests, including Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi, who played their own set just before this one, along with Jackie Greene and Soulive’s Eric Krasno. No Mountain Jam is complete without the Mule, and this one was yet another winner.

I recorded this set with MBHO microphones and an extra-warm Aerco custom preamp. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

GOASTT (The Ghost of a Saber Tooth Tiger): June 8, 2014 Mountain Jam (Hunter, NY) – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

“This is the most people we’ve ever played to. That’s fuckin’ awesome” – Sean Ono Lennon

We had nothing but good things to say about The GOASTT’s performance at SXSW this year, and I’m pleased to report that their Mountain Jam debut was even more well-received. If Sean Ono Lennon and Charlotte Kemp Muhl, together with their crack band, didn’t gain some new followers out of the thousands teeming the Hunter Mountain Ski Area on this gorgeous Sunday afternoon, it wasn’t for lack of trying.

The band tore through a set focused primarily on their 2014 release, Midnight Sun, a blast of modern, Beatlesque pop that has taken the band’s sound further in the rock direction than it has ever been. These are perfect songs for this kind of afternoon, with swirling chords and dreamy choruses, all suffused with the sweetness of Ono Lennon’s voice and Kemp Muhl’s harmonies behind them. The set followed the SXSW set fairly closely, kicking off with three of the album’s strongest and hardest-hitting tracks, “Too Deep”, “Xanadu” and “Animals” before hitting a nice mid-set jam of the album’s title track into “Jardin du Luxembourg” from the Le Carotte Bleu EP. By the time The GOASTT closed things out with Syd Barrett’s “Long Gone”, the mountain was full, the sun was high, and hardly anybody wasn’t on their feet. My suspicion is that The GOASTT have many more large audiences in their future.

I recorded this set with MBHO microphones and a high-end EAA PSP-2 preamp on loan from hi and lo. The sound quality is outstanding. Enjoy!

It says quite a bit that out of the many sets by well-known “jam band” luminaries and others at this tenth annual Mountain Jam, one of my very favorite was by my hometown band (and decidedly non-“jam”) band Lucius, who we first got acquainted with playing as a duo in a humble backyard, before the crowds and the record and the festival circuit. The ladies who played Backyard Brunch Sessions that day weren’t anything close to a well-known act at that point — they had one EP to their name — but what they already had was what would carry them to where they are today: talent, great songs and humility. Back then, we hoped for, but never could have predicted, the way this band has blown up, to the point that on this past weekend alone, they were scheduled for both Mountain Jam and the much larger Governor’s Ball back in the city.

Compared with my last outing with the band at Webster Hall (and another set I didn’t record at SXSW) this Mountain Jam set was revelatory. Simply put, this always-promising band has upped their game to where it needs to be to play these kinds of stages. Vocalists Holly Laessig and Jess Wolfe have mastered their sound, their harmonies carrying well across Hunter Mountain’s wide-open space, and the band, consisting of percussionists/instrumentalists Andrew Burri, Peter Lalish, and Dan Molad is similarly able to play big, loud, and dialed-in. Lucius manage the difficult feat of sounding modern without coming across corny or derivative, while offering some of the same arena-filling fire that great female-fronted 80s groups like Heart used to be able to without sounding retro. They even served up a few bars of Whitney Houston’s “I Wanna Dance With Somebody” during “Turn It Around” (streaming below) just to put an exclamation point on that notion. Fittingly, I’m streaming “Nothing Ordinary” from this set below, because there is nothing ordinary about Lucius. This was by far the best set of theirs that I’ve seen, and they’re just getting started. Please support them — they’re on the festival and otherwise U.S., UK and Europe tour circuit until the fall, and their album Wildewoman is out there for purchase.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK4V microphones from an optimal spot at the festival, and the sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Blitzen Trapper: June 7, 2014 Mountain Jam X (Hunter, NY) – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

Mistakes have been made. I first caught Blitzen Trapper at Music Hall of Williamsburg way back in 2009, dug what they were about, but then managed to miss every single one of their NYC shows for the next five years (though the site covered them as recently as 2012 at the Stuyvesant Oval). When Trapper took the stage at Mountain Jam this year, I expected the same good-time band I’d seen back in 2009. Instead, what I witnessed was a far more robust performance that featured some amazing covers (including the set closer of Led Zep’s classic “Ramble On”), killer improvisations, and excellent new work from their latest record, VIIThe Portland band hadn’t played Mountain Jam before, and they obviously decided to make the most of the opportunity, bringing their A game for the full hour allotted. Highlights for me included the jammed-out “Thirsty Man” from VII, “God & Suicide” from 2008’s Furr, and “Black River Killer” from the 2009 EP of the same name. The big stage has a way of proving a band’s mettle, and given the opportunity, Trapper proved that they’re more than a great club band. Give them the chance, and they’re a juggernaut.

I recorded this set from a location to the immediate right of the soundboard with MBHO microphones. There is a bit of phasing caused by the higher winds during this set, but the vocals and instruments are clear and the sound quality is overall excellent. Enjoy!

Look for more Mountain Jam sets soon.

Jeff Tweedy: June 7, 2014 Mountain Jam X (Hunter, NY) – FLAC/MP3/Streaming Full Set

June 9, 2014

[photos by acidjack — they’re not very good, but you wanted this post up fast, right?]

We’ve written about Wilco and Jeff Tweedy a lot in the years of this site, in part because Wilco continue to be supportive of what we tapers do, but more importantly because they’ve continued to refine and expand their live show, making for something worth recording. For Jeff Tweedy’s inaugural Mountain Jam, Tweedy decided to serve up a slew of new songs (twelve, to be exact) , as well as some of the best-loved Wilco classics including “Jesus, Etc.” and “I Am Trying To Break Your Heart”, as well as the always-poignant “California Stars” from the band’s collaboration with Billy Bragg. The new tunes will appear on Tweedy’s forthcoming album with his son, Spencer, entitled Sukierae, which drops on September 16.

While the Wilco classics are always welcome, the new material was this set’s standout. Tweedy managed to get the audience to sing along to “Slow Love” despite that none of us had heard it before, and “Diamond Light” already looks like another great “jam” song, with a fiery guitar outro that begs for improvisation. There’s plenty more we could say about the set, but for Tweedy fans, the reason to hear this will be clear, and we want to get it out there as quickly as possible. Without further ado, here you go.

I recorded this set with MBHO microphones from an area to the immediate right of the soundboard. Despite this being a wide-open outdoor show at a decent distance from the stage, the vocals and general PA sound is clear and direct, and an excellent representation of this performance. Enjoy!

Lee Ranaldo and the Dust: April 24, 2014 Union Pool – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

We like to think we have a special relationship to Lee Ranaldo’s solo career here at NYCTaper. We recorded the first few of his local solo shows back in 2011, and have been there for many more NYC-area gigs moving forward. We have captured live versions of pretty much all of his two excellent solo albums, some really neat covers, and an occasional look back at his Sonic Youth material. But through it all, the quality has been consistent — Lee is a pro with a fertile musical imagination, a penchant for picking superb collaborators, and unique guitar skills. At this Union Pool show a few weeks back, we were fortunate to catch all of this and more. Lee worked through most of the latest album Last Night on Earth (Matador Records) of which we streaming show-stopper “Ambulancer”, and from his eclectic bag of covers, Lee played a faithful cover of proto post-punk legends Wire, this one from their debut album Pink Flag. “Mannequin” is streaming below.

This set was recorded in our usual manner in this venue, this time with the AKG’s attached to the balcony rail and mixed with an excellent board feed. The sound quality is superb. Enjoy!
