65daysofstatic: November 24, 2013 Bowery Ballroom – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

The Sheffield, UK band 65daysofstatic are among the leading lights of Great Britain’s post-rock movement. Almost thirteen years after their formation and ten after their debut EP, Stumble.Stop.Repeat, the band showed this crowd at Bowery Ballroom why they’ve endured. Even going back to their first album, The Fall of Math, 65daysofstatic were ahead of the times, adding glitchy electronic noises over the top of their cinematic compositions. The band strikes me as less guitar-driven than many of their peers generally; the cresting waves of guitar are still very much there, but they feel more of a component to the sound rather than the band’s reason for being. Consider, for example, “Prism”, the band’s latest single, from their 2013 album Wild Light, or the piano-driven “Taipei”. Most of this set was drawn from Wild Light, but we also got a taste of the band’s earlier material, such as a sweeping version of The Fall of Math’s “Install A Beak In the Heart that Clucks Time in Arabic”. Considering that the band chose a New York live set for their 2009 live record Escape From New York, I can’t say I was surprised by the outpouring of love from this crowd, who treated 65daysofstatic as enthusiastically as the headliner, Caspian (that recording here).

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK5 microphones and a flawless soundboard feed from the house engineer, Kenny. The sound quality is outstanding. Enjoy!

The Numbers Band (15.60.75): December 6, 2013 Bowery Electric – Flac/MP3/Streaming

The Numbers Band (aka 15.60.75) is the fount from which much of the great Ohio-based music of the last four decades emanates. If that’s too big a statement, then let’s look at the facts. The Numbers Band debut album Jimmy Bell’s Still in Town was once described by Pere Ubu’s David Thomas as “one of the great moments of our culture”, and another time as “the only good album ever recorded by anyone”. The band’s members have included Gerald Casale (Devo), Chris Butler (The Waitresses, Tin Huey), and Terry Hynde (Chrissy Hynde’s brother). The band’s leader Robert Kidney has played with Anton Fier in the Golden Palominos, and along with his brother Jack with Ubu’s David Thomas. In 2012 Robert was awarded the Cleveland Arts Prize Lifetime Achievement Award. Locally in Ohio the band is a legend, but outside the midwest The Numbers Band is woefully under-appreciated and has never quite eclipsed cult status. On Friday night, the band returned to NYC for their first show here in many years to promote the re-issue of Jimmy Bell’s by the excellent Brooklyn-based but Ohio-centric record label Exit Stencil. It was very satisfying that Bowery Electric was packed to the rafters and the band both acknowledged and played off the energy of the crowd. Robert in particular, even given his age and recent health woes, seemed to be in great spirits and in prime form. The set began as the album does, with “Animal Speaks” and this version was on fire — we’re streaming it below. The energy never let up as the band worked through many Jimmy Bell’s tracks and a few deep cuts before they played essentially two encores. In the end it was really an honor to capture this set and gratifying to see a legendary band capable of an epic set and still around to receive the crowd adoration they deserve.

I recorded this set with the Sennheiser Cards mounted about 15 feet from the stage and mixed with a fine board feed. There was some crowd yapping at the back bar that can be heard during quieter moments, and a tad bit of peak static in the vocal mics at high volumes, but those are fairly minor flaws to an otherwise superb recording. Eagulls: October 16, 2013 Glasslands – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

The Leeds, UK punks Eagulls aren’t one of your pretty sort of “punk” bands. Having taken a rather bizarre and uncompromising posture from the get-go (they hate “beach bands” and those that incorporate “Afrobeat” among other easy targets), Eagulls bear the burden justifying the attitude in the live setting. Happily, this CMJ New Music Marathon showcase at Glasslands showed off the harder-edged side of the band in a way that suggests they can back the smack talk up. Frontman George Mitchell brings more heat on his own than most entire bands, yowling into the mic like he’s screaming his argument at a long-hated relative in the back of the room. Their short burst of a set wasn’t filled with a lot of conventionally pretty moments, but it made its point. The band has put out an EP on Canadian-based Deranged, a suitable space to share with such acts as Fucked Up and White Lung, but their U.S. full-length comes your way by longtime friends of the site Partisan Records, whose generous eclecticism makes their catalog as unpredictable as it is enjoyable. Look for that release on March 4 here in the U.S. Until then, put these guys on your calendar.

I recorded this set with our usual setup for the venue, with Naiant X-R microphones and a soundboard feed. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

The Notekillers: November 5, 2013 Trans Pecos – Flac/MP3/Streaming

The Notekillers are one of the more interesting and unique stories in music, an history that we outlined when we recorded the band nearly two years ago at a benefit for Jonathan Toubin. The Notekillers have not played an NYC show since that night in 2012, but the band came together for another special night on Thursday. The space at 915 Wyckoff has been dormant since the Summer of 2011 when the Silent Barn was closed. In the interim, the building has been brought up to code and ToddP has now opened the new fully legal venue Trans Pecos on the site. Thursday was the debut show for the venue and we were fortunate to be there and get a good look at the place. The venue will continue to evolve in terms of physical layout and site upgrades (including outdoor patio) and the music and entertainment aspect will be produced by a series of excellent curators. The fine Brooklyn boutique label Northern Spy Records will curate every Thursday and their first event was a eclectic mix of genres. The Notekillers set was forty minutes of their proficient instrumental avant punk/prog/jazz and it was engaging from start to finish. From up close, it was a treat to watch a musician of such accomplishment as David First, but the band is truly a trio of equals as bassist Stephen Bilenky and drummer/saxophonist Barry Halkin certainly held their own. The band played songs from both their 77-81 Compilation and their 2011 comeback album We’re Here To Help, including “Eyelash” that we are streaming below.

I recorded this set with the Sennheiser cardioids mounted on-stage in the middle of the three performers, and mixed with a slight bit of soundboard feed as enhancement and volume for the sax. The mix is primarily the onstage mics, which captured the sound superbly. Enjoy!

The Blind Shake: October 27, 2013 285 Kent – Flac/MP3/Streaming

When Thee Oh Sees toured last month, John Dwyer brought Minnesota’s The Blind Shake on the road with them. Last month, we saw Blind Shake twice in NYC, but much preferred the more intimate 285 Kent set. The band plays an angular brand of garage punk, not dissimilar from Thee Oh Sees, but with a decidedly less 60s feel and perhaps a bit of a post-punk edge. Their set at 285 was fast and furious — the band literally took no significant breaks in between songs, so that they played 13 songs in barely 30 minutes. The Blind Shake have two full albums, an EP and several singles and their most recent record Key To A False Door is on Dwyer’s Castle Face Records. The setlist drew from their releases and also seems to include some unreleased tracks. The band just completed a lengthy US tour, so there are currently no dates but we’ll be sure the catch The Blink Shake when they return to NYC.

I recorded this set in the same manner as the Thee Oh Sees set and the sound is excellent. Enjoy!

The Complete Last Waltz: November 27, 2013 Capitol Theatre Portchester – Flac/MP3/Streaming

It took place on Thanksgiving night 1976, and it is perhaps the greatest rock and roll concert ever — certainly in the top ten. As a concert, The Band’s The Last Waltz featured one of the premiere acts in the history of rock music retiring from touring in their prime and playing their greatest material accompanied by a who’s-who of guests. This isn’t just a few cameos from some big names — these are all-time performances from the greatest of the great. Dylan, Clapton, Neil, Van, Joni, and many others including everyone from Neil Diamond to Muddy Waters. The movie was directed by Scorcese is also perhaps the best concert film ever recorded. As a tribute to this remarkable and historical event in music history, The Complete Last Waltz is a project of tremendous ambition and respect for the history of the event. Last year the project was performed in San Francisco, but this year it moved East to the Capitol Theatre in Portchester on Thanksgiving Eve. The house band presented a bookend of sorts for this year for me personally, as the musicians were in large part the same group that had performed so admirably for Joe Russo’s Almost Dead at Brooklyn Bowl in January. On this night, the band lead was taken by Sam Cohen and he did an extraordinary job both performing the songs to which he was assigned and passing the spotlight to the queue of outstanding guests. For this four-hour event it would be unwise to summarize every highlight, as there were plenty. I’ve chosen to stream four tracks from this event, which were personal favorites. Eric D. Johnson of the Fruit Bats (RIP) performed Van Morrison’s “Caravan” with Van’s 70s energy and his clothing outfit, including the bell bottom jeans. Eric Earley, from nyctaper-faves Blitzen Trapper, performed the entire Dylan suite impeccably with “I Don’t Believe You” echoing the career highlight of the Dylan & The Band collaboration, the 1966 tour. Another site favorite Cass McCombs played three Band songs, of which we thought he completely nailed “Stage Fright”. Finally, Kenny Siegel of whom we were not previously familiar summoned the ghost of Richard Manuel for a perfect rendition of “The Shape I’m In”. But those four songs are just a sample of the amazing music made that night. I recorded this set with the four-mic rig from the unfortunate official taping location in this venue, which is situated behind the soundboard and about 30 feet back from the balcony overhang. The other unfortunate circumstance at this show was the outrageous persistent yapping from much of the crowd — I mean people just would not stop talking. This despite a very nicely worded request on page two of the official Program asking people to refrain from talking or move the lobby. With those two very big caveats, please enjoy this recording!
