Wormburner: August 10, 2011 Wantagh NY – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

A couple of weeks ago, Wantagh witnessed an embarrassment of riches, as Deer Tick played a massive two-hour set late into the night. When we posted that set, our review did not mention another highlight of the evening, the outstanding opening set by Wormburner. When we recorded Wormburner in December, their set clued us into the fact that this is a band to be reckoned with — strong instrumentation, excellent songwriting, and the indefatigable stage presence of lead singer Steve “Hank” Henry. The Wantagh show also proved one other thing — they are really generous guys. As we’ve reported before, this event at Mulcahy’s was a benefit concert for the Tommy Brull Foundation. Two weeks later, we learned that the show raised a phenomenal $12,000, all of which was donated directly to Camp Anchor, a recreation program for disabled children in Nassau County. And as Deer Tick would follow, Wormburner played their hearts out for this show. Their 45-minute set began with a bang and never let up. The band also featured two outstanding covers, including Guided By Voices, and the Decemberists (streaming below). Other highlights included “Pike City Proper” and “The Interstate” (also streaming below) from their Spring 2011 release Placed By The Gideons. Wormburner return to NYC and will be playing Mercury Lounge on September 9.

I recorded this set in the same manner as the Deer Tick show and the sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Woods: August 13, 2011 Bowery Ballroom – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Full Set

We caught Woods this summer in the unlikely Northside Festival venue of St. Cecilia’s Roman Catholic Church (that recording here), but it was an equally special treat to see them play the best-sounding venue in Manhattan, Bowery Ballroom. Although the set hewed fairly closely to what we saw back in June, no two Woods shows are alike, and indeed, the jam-heavy favorites “Bend Beyond” and “I Was Gone” took different directions than they did back at St. Cecilia’s. We also got a huge treat in the form of the band’s cover of the Graham Nash tune “Military Madness” as their final song. As at St. Cecilia’s, the band added an organ player to give them a bigger, more psychedelic sound, and the Bowery’s sound system was mixed to perfection.

Befitting the high quality sound in the room, we came out with a lot of high quality gear to record this show, including a soundboard feed and two sets of mics. The result is undoubtedly our best recording of Woods to date. Enjoy!

The War On Drugs released Slave Ambient this past week. Its an album that’s been in the works for a couple of years, since the 2008 release of their excellent Secretly Canadian Records debut Wagonwheel Blues. But in a way, its an album that’s been waiting much longer for its release. The band’s leader Adam Granduciel incorporated some older songs into the album and spent many months tweaking the mixes, reworking arrangements, and perfecting what will undoubtedly become one of 2011’s best albums. When we recorded The War On Drugs in January, the new songs were beginning to take shape, but when the album versions were released, the positive developments were striking. On Friday at Cameo Gallery, The War On Drugs performed a superb ninety-minute set that consisted primarily of Slave Ambient material — eight of the album’s twelve songs were played. Of the new songs, the second-slotted “Baby Missiles” was particularly tight and focused and we’re streaming it below. Other highlights included the jammed transition from “It’s Your Destiny” into “I Was There”, and the eighteen-minute encore of “A Needle In Your Eye #16” with an extended guitar and sampled-driven ambient jam. The War On Drugs will be touring throughout the Fall. While they are on a current East and Midwest swing, they will tour Europe in September, and return to the US in October.

I recorded this set with the Neumann microphones mounted in the center of the room in front of the soundboard booth and raised to 12 feet. The room mics were mixed with a mono board feed to accentuate the vocals, and the sound quality is superb. Enjoy!

Implodes: August 10, 2011 Mercury Lounge – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

Implodes, it must be said, aren’t a very “summer-y” band, so it’s a good thing I caught their opening set for Joan of Arc in the dark, air-conditioned confines of Mercury Lounge. Hot on the heels of their debut release on Kranky Records, Black Earth, the band appeared to be eager to move past that new material into even more uncharted musical territory. This set boasted a number of brand-new songs, but the Black Earth material made for a good jumping-off point, as the band opened with that album’s three leadoff tracks. Implodes tunes have a cosmic sweep to them, with airy lead guitar riffs soaring above a foreboding, dense backbeat. Vocals, where used, are sung with the reverb on high, adding to the ghostly, atmospheric quality of the songs. Some songs abandon traditional melodic structure entirely and shift into ambient territory, echoing some of the band Mogwai’s more subtle interludes. That said, Implodes are not toying with the loud-soft dynamic in the way that some other successful post-rock acts do; their songs focus more on sustaining a level of tension throughout, without the cataclysmic release of, say, an Explosions in the Sky tune. Several of the new songs, none of which I knew the titles to, were particularly strong, indicating that the promise of Black Earth is only the beginning for this young band.

I recorded this set with a soundboard feed of the usual high-quality house mix from Kevin of Mercury Lounge, coupled with the Schoeps supercardiod microphones. The recording is outstanding. Enjoy!

Joan of Arc was recorded and will be posted in the next few days.

Teletextile: August 7, 2011 BBS at the Richardson – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

The Backyard Brunch Sessions made a rare move indoors on a recent Saturday for this excellent performance by Brooklyn’s own Teletextile, due to the threat of rain. We couldn’t have asked for a better indoor setting (or one with better drinks) than Williamsburg’s best cocktail bar, The Richardson, in its intimate downstairs parlor. As light shined through windowed glass doors to the street and attendees ate white gazpacho, Teletextile showed off the avant-pop chops of frontwoman Pamela Martinez (wearing some unmistakable headwear) and her band. Mixing in unusual instruments like a full-sized harp and an accordion, this mostly-acoustic set focused on the band’s recent EP, Reflector. Martinez led off with a solo number, “Heartquake” which had her voice trilling to the upper registers at its peak, then sinking effortlessly back to a whisper. After that head-turning beginning, the band continued with strong material, including “What If You” and its companion song, “What If I” from Reflector, that showed off their basic chops as well as their unique perspective.

hi and lo recorded this set with a variety of high-end microphones placed around the room. The results are excellent. Enjoy!

Its been an eventful Summer, and the Fall season continues unabated albeit with a fairly modest schedule. Fall highlights include two outdoor Wilco shows, our CMJ party, and the sad and crazy day that will be the “farewell” to Monster Island. I do expect to add some shows to this list since there are some noticeable gaps. Feel free to give us a kick in the right direction.

[Caveat: Below is the updated schedule. We expect to attend and record these events. However, circumstances will prevent some of these from being done, and others will be added in the meantime.]

If you want nyctaper to record your band, a band you represent, a show you’re promoting, or even your favorite band in the world, get us in the door and make sure everyone who needs to approve of the recording gives permission. Also, remember each person on the nyctaper crew does this all for free — the recordings, the post-production, the reviews, the links, etc. — so treat us fairly.
