A lot can be learned about Brooklyn’s Wakey Wakey! by considering the following anecdote from last Wednesday’s show at Rock Shop. It was the third song in their headlining set, following an outstanding set from tourmates Jukebox the Ghost. Keyboardist/vocalist/frontman Mike Grubbs dismisses the band from the stage and launches into a quiet solo number. As he sings the first line, peals of laughter erupt – he is covering Madonna’s Cyndi Lauper’s “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun.” But what is more surprising and refreshing about this tour staple is the fact that Mike completely transforms the song, finding a sad, wistful undercurrent to what has to be one of the most bouncy, ridiculous songs of the 1980s. Plus, he just sings the hell out of it. With folk/pop music like this that can at times veer into melancholy territory, that very lack of self-seriousness, and the willingness to have fun, are essential ingredients. This set – a homecoming for the band after a long tour – was strong throughout, with Grubbs and his bandmates on-point musically and loose with the crowd, having fun with this intimate group before their big night at Bowery Ballroom the following evening. This show was so intimate, in fact, that one couple got a chance to talk to Mike about how they got engaged just before the show!

I recorded this set from our usual location in the venue with the DPA microphones and an outstanding soundboard feed from the house engineer, Shane. The quality is outstanding. Enjoy!

The Antlers: May 6, 2011 Knitting Factory – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

On Friday night, The Antlers played a surprise midnight show at Knitting Factory. The show was a brooklynvegan-presented impromptu CD release show for Burst Apart (Frenchkiss), which will be released on Tuesday. The Antlers treated their fans who missed SXSW to a encore of the show they presented in March — Burst Apart from start to finish. The Brooklyn crowd also got a very special bonus in superb renditions of two Hospice songs as encores, including a powerful “Wake” set closer. But the real focus of this evening was the new material. Burst Apart is perhaps the best album you will purchase this year. The album’s production is flawless and the strength of the songs are apparent from start to finish. From the opening “I Don’t Want Love” through standout tracks (and future singles) “French Exit”, “No Widows” and “Every Night My Teeth Are Falling Out”, the album reaches its climax with the future song of the year, the hopeful-but-guarded “Putting the Dog to Sleep”. The live version of “Dog” (streaming below) is an affirmation and was a exclamation point for this incredible evening, as the band extended the closing section to a powerful finish.

Burst Apart can still be pre-ordered online and the special packages offer bonuses [HERE].

I recorded this set with the warmer DPA microphones set up at the soundboard area and mixed them with an excellent feed from the board. The Antlers FOH Dan did an excellent job on the mix this evening and the result is a recording with superb sound quality. Enjoy!

Lyonnais: April 15, 2011 Glasslands – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

I fully admit to knowing next to nothing about the Atlanta band Lyonnais – except that they rock. The four piece began in 2008 as a project between two WRAL-Atlanta music directors, Farbod Kokabi and Farzad Moghaddam, and the two clearly have an affinity for drone, psychedelic and post-rock, as they layer on the heavy reverb and distortion without apology. Their music has become increasingly experimental, focusing on longer compositions that defy the traditional 3-to-6 minute format.

This show at Glasslands, opening for Eternal Summers (that recording here), gave Lyonnais a chance to thrive in what might be a more natural environment for a band of their style – Williamsburg. These five songs – mostly longer-form compositions – showcased their ability to combine dense, reverb-heavy guitar jams with surprisingly accessible hooks. Although all of the material was new to me, I hope it will become more familiar as the band progresses to the album release stage in the (hopefully) near future (their debt album is being shopped to labels at present).

I recorded this set from the same location as the Eternal Summers recording, and the sound is excellent. Enjoy!

Please help out with the setlist – as the band does not appear to have any releases, the only source of song info I could find was their MySpace page.

Celebration: April 22, 2011 Union Pool – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

While the soul of music is fueled by a panoply of human emotions, some measure of distance is necessary for the artist to maintain a perspective on those emotions. Katrina Ford was not given an opportunity to have that distance on Thursday last at Union Pool. Celebration had booked this show months ago, but it was a cruel and tragic coincidence that her good friend and fellow performer Gerard Smith passed away a few short days before. Katrina dedicated the band’s set to Gerard and all three of the bands who played on this evening selflessly donated the show’s proceeds to Gerard’s family. While the raw emotions of a recent and painful loss is evident throughout the set, Celebration powerful performance is also fueled by those same feelings. We are streaming “Heartbreak” below, which closed the show with a peak version, and also encapsulated the band’s loss.

I recorded this set with the Neumanns mounted on the balcony rail and mixed it with an excellent board feed. The sound quality is superb. Enjoy!

…And You Will Know Us By the Trail of Dead: April 29, 2011 Bowery Ballroom – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

May 3, 2011

Starting with their band name, Austin’s …And You Will Know Us By the Trail of Dead have never been concerned with doing things the way that other bands do them. They are the kind of band that opens a co-headlining (yet nonetheless, technically opening) set at the Bowery Ballroom on a Friday night with a fifteen minute song (“Strange News From Another Planet”) from a new record (2011’s Tao of the Dead) that likely even the fans in attendance knew less well than their classic material. They are also the kind of band who, when they do that, cause the crowd to go apeshit.

Indeed, for the younger generation that was there to see the co-headliner Surfer Blood, this intense hour of no-compromise punk/art-rock may have been a departure from their usual Friday night fare. Surfer Blood is a great band, but Trail of Dead is many things they are not: loud, audacious, and visceral. But whether you came for Trail of Dead or not, they had to have won you over by the time they left the stage; frontman Conrad Keely bounced and pogo’d all over the stage while Jason Reece and Jamie Miller traded turns playing guitar and hammering the skins. With Autry Fulbright, also of Midnight Masses, joining on bass, the band has a killer lineup, even compared to the many variously-sized ones they have had. They were clearly enjoying themselves, as well as the energy from the crowd, which peaked in size during their set. The set covered a wide range of the band’s material, from the new material to classics such as “It Was There That I Saw You”, the leadoff track to their Pitchfork “perfect 10” album, Source Tags & Codes. The soaring song about intoxicating, damaged love is both jubilant and sad, a classic whether you’re hearing it for the first or fiftieth time. It also made for a tight under-four-minute contrast to some of the more epic numbers that bookended the set (including a 7+ minute “Perfect Teenhood” from Madonna to close out the set) …And You Will Know Us By the Trail of Dead don’t just defy expectations – they exceed them.

I recorded this set with the DPA microphones and a handmade analog preamp from my usual spot in the venue. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Please note that the Surfer Blood set was recorded, but per our agreement with Kanine Records, will not be posted until the release of Surfer Blood’s forthcoming EP.

Buffalo Tom: April 28, 2011 Bowery Ballroom – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

The conventional wisdom about Buffalo Tom is that they are a quintessential “90s sound” band forever interwoven with the cultural milieu of that period — specifically, their connection to the short-lived but iconic tv show “My So Called Life”. The problem with boxing in the Tom with a sound or with a decade is that those relationships are almost entirely anecedotal. Buffalo Tom is a trio with a universal guitar/bass/drums/earnest-vocals “roots rock” sound with influences from any of the last five decades, and which retains substantial relevance to this day. In that spirit, the band released Skins in March and that album is as strong as anything the band has released in the last twenty years. At Bowery Ballroom on Thursday, the Skins tracks were interwoven with the band’s most classic tracks in a strong well-paced ninety-minute set. The band even reserved “Don’t Forget Me” for the first encore slot. Bill Janovitz has also never shied away from difficult covers — the band played a Gun Club song at the Mercury Lounge show in November. At the Bowery, the Van Morrison classic “Into The Mystic” flowed naturally from the Tom’s “Larry”, and we’re streaming that set highlight below.

I recorded this set with the four microphone rig from our standard balcony location in this venue and the sound quality is superb. Enjoy!
