The Mekons returned to NYC this weekend after a nearly two year absence and proved that while the band and the fans are older and a little more grey, the sense of humor and musical spirit have not changed. At Mercury Lounge last night, for nearly two hours the between-song banter between Sally Timms and Jon Langford was nearly as entertaining as the multi-decade span of the 24 song setlist. Although the absence of Tom Greenhalgh was noted, his stage presence was compensated by the emergence of multi-talented Lu Edmonds. While the setlist leaned heavily towards 2007’s Natural, the band also reached back for three songs from the classic 1985 release Fear and Whiskey.

I arrived late to the venue without a ticket but was able to get in at the last minute and set up the microphones eight feet up on the wall next to the soundboard. The sound quality in the venue was excellent, but the very vocal and boisterous crowd adds some “local color” to the recording. Enjoy!

This recording is now available to download in FLAC and MP3 at Archive.org [HERE].

Oneida: July 24, 2009 Market Hotel – Flac and MP3 Downloads

We will leave the review of this show to the professionals — Rob Harvilla did a piece on the new Oneida album Rated O and this performance in today’s Village Voice. What the article did not mention was the serious upgrades to the Market Hotel and the pro-quality sound system that ToddP rented for this particular night. We were pleased with the vast improvement in sound quality, as was the band to whom we spoke after the show. The system had a significant bass presence which can be felt in this recording, and a clarity not heard at this venue before.

We recorded from the center of the floor with the four microphones and we are extremely pleased with the quality of this recording. Enjoy!

Oneida Exclusive: There will be another OneidaFest this year, most likely in December and it will be at a ToddP venue that we are not at liberty to name. We recorded last year’s OneidaFest [here].

Conor Oberst: July 18, 2009 Dutchess County Stadium – Flac and MP3 Downloads

Conor Oberst and The Mystic Valley Band opened for Wilco at Dutchess County Stadium last weekend and achieved an uncommon feat — the rapt attention of the majority of the crowd, which by the end of their set was “won over”. Its a difficult task to open for a band of such popularity and reverence, but Conor’s engaging stage presence and the outstanding play of the band members contributed to their success. The setlist consisted primarily of material from the band’s latest release Outer South and from Conor’s self-titled 2008 solo album, and was highlighted by the wild closing “I Don’t Want To Die (In the Hospital)”.

We recorded from the identical location and equipment as the Wilco recording, so that the quality is absolutely superb. Enjoy!

Built to Spill: July 19, 2009 Maxwell’s – Flac and MP3 Downloads (Soundboard!)

July 25, 2009

“Feel about the same but I’m 10 years older” sings Doug Martsch in the Built to Spill classic “Three Years Ago Today”. It was ten years ago when Built to Spill last played at Maxwell’s, on a unseasonably balmy night in late October of 1998. I recorded that show (the early set) by patching into the soundboard along with another guy who I knew from seeing around at shows. Ten years later that same guy (Erik) and I are friends, and he thankfully repeated history and brought to nyctaper a recording of this week’s return of Built to Spill to Maxwell’s.

This week’s show contains other eerie similarities a decade removed, particularly in the setlist. “Three Years” performed second on the list on Sunday, was the opener of the 1998 show, and “Kicked it in the Sun”, now a BTS classic, was performed as an untitled “new song” in 1998. As he did 10 years ago, Doug also opened up the floor for requests, which led this week to some of the older material rarely played these days, including “Virginia Reel Around the Fountain” and “Nowhere Nothin’ F Up”, both also repeats 10 years later.

As Built to Spill gear up to release There Is No Enemy this fall, expect to see much more of this band on nyctaper. Preliminarily, we plan to record each of the four NYC shows in October (Webster Hall and Music Hall of Williamsburg).

This recording would not have been possible with the contributions of many people, but primary thanks to Erik for recording and to Doug Martsch, who agreed in an extremely friendly and generous email to permit this recording to be posted here. Its a soundboard feed from Maxwell’s, which is an excellent venue with talented staff. The sound is quite excellent if a tad bit high in vocals as are all board recordings. Enjoy!

Tortoise: July 21, 2009 Le Poisson Rouge – Flac and MP3 Downloads

Post-rock pioneers Tortoise are back with a vengeance. Their June 2009 release Beacons of Ancestorship is easily their most powerful album since 2001’s Standard. The recent reports from the 2009 shows have been glowing, and on Tuesday night at Le Poisson Rouge, those reports were confirmed and more. Tortoise performed a stunning seventeen songs, including an unheard-of two encore segments of five total songs. The set consisted primarily of Beacons material with a nice selection of older material towards the end of the set.

We seriously acknowledge the continued excellence of Le Poisson Rouge as a venue. Their diverse and eclectic artist bookings continue to impress, and their sound system has continued to improve in quality. Additionally, the venue has been incredibly nice and cooperative to the nyctaper site in many ways, including permitting Acidjack to enter the venue early for this show to set up. The result is perhaps his finest recorded contribution to this site, a recording of outstanding balance and clarity with a remarkable bass response. Thanks again to all involved in the production of this superb listen. Enjoy!
