This Wavves concert was already three days ago, which means that the “comeback” story is old news. In the atomic-speed Behind The Music career time of Nathan Williams, he’s undoubtedly moved on to the next chapter of the story. We are not sure whether by now he’s found Jesus, gone country, or written a symphony. What we do know is that on Wednesday at Bowery Ballroom with the reverb at full throttle, Wavves delivered a fifty-minute set of 15 songs, both old and new, to a crowd of bouncing, slamming and crowd-surfing fans all with a cast from a broken wrist on Nathan’s right arm.

Acidjack recorded this set from the middle of the floor, which was crowded and crazy. There’s quite a bit of crowd noise on this recording which rather than distracting the listener, actually adds authenticity to the capture. Enjoy!

Yo La Tengo has stayed fresh for over two decades by consistently keeping fans on their toes with the unpredictable. On Monday night, in an opening slot for 12,000 Wilco fans, one might have expected a fairly straightforward accessible set from YLT. Instead the band delivered an hour of fuzz and crackle anchored by the complete madness of the twenty minute closer “The Story of Yo La Tango”. While the set left casual listeners with raised eyebrows, those who listened closely were treated to an hour of what makes Yo La Tengo special. Also featured in the set were three songs from Popular Songs, the new album due in September.

We recorded from the same location as the Wilco recording, but the wind was heavier during this set. While there was also more chatter during the YLT opening, there were significantly fewer people in the venue so that the crowd din is also lower. Overall, this is certainly a fine recording although not of the quality of our several YLT Hannukah Maxwell’s recordings. Enjoy!

Coyote Eyes were one of the two local band to perform at the NYCTaper event at Monster Island two Fridays ago. We found this excellent band through the work of others — most notably the Ear Farm music blog. Their recorded songs are angular but melodic, and mix a variety of interesting influences. But live, Coyote Eyes are three fluent players with a ferocious stage energy. As I told Manny after the show, I knew they were good, I just didn’t know they were this good. I expect to hear a lot more from Coyote Eyes in the future — here and on other music blogs.
