Camper Van Beethoven: January 10, 2009 Bowery – Flac and MP3 Downloads

As if Friday night’s thorough two-hour career retrospective was not enough, Camper Van Beethoven returned to the Bowery Ballroom on Saturday and delivered a similarly energetic show with sixteen different songs in the setlist. The band dug deep into the catalog for such rare gems as “Joe Stalin’s Cadillac”, “Where the Hell is Bill?”, and “Abundance” among the 33 songs performed. Although we would have preferred to see “Interstellar Overdrive” again, it seemed fairly clear that CVB consciously aimed to provide a completely different and yet equally compelling show on the second night of the stand.

We recorded from the same location as Friday night’s recording, but the mix in the room was slightly better on Saturday. Although the large crowd and more rambunctious fans attended Saturday’s show, our location avoided any significant noise and ultimately this is likely the superior recording of the two nights. Enjoy!

Victor Krummenacher: January 9, 2009 Bowery – Flac and MP3 Downloads

When Victor Krummenacher and Alison Faith Levy perform together as “McCabe and Mrs. Miller” the chemistry between the two is obvious. At Bowery Ballroom on Friday night, the duo opened for Camper Van Beethoven and provided a compelling fifty-minute set of bluesy-americana backed by a band of superb musicians. The setlist consisted primarily of material from Krummenacher’s solo albums, including the recently released Patriarch Blues.

We recorded from the identical location as the Camper set and the sound quality is quite excellent. Enjoy!

Victor Krummenacher is performing a solo set as part of the NYCTaper Presents show tonight (January 11) at Pianos.

Camper Van Beethoven: January 9, 2009 Bowery – Flac and MP3 Downloads

If its possible to summarize twenty-five years of making music into one show, then Camper Van Beethoven was about as successful as possible last night at Bowery Ballroom. The well-paced set lasted nearly two hours and the twenty-nine songs were selected judiciously from their entire catalog. Each member of the band had their moments, but we were particularly focused on Jonathan Segel, who flowed naturally from violin to guitar to organ, often simultaneously, and all while he provided vocal harmonies. The highlight of the evening was the main set closer, an intense cover of Pink Floyd’s “Interstellar Overdrive”.

We recorded this set from the balcony rail next to the soundboard in a direct line and eye level to the PA stacks. The sound quality is quite excellent, enjoy!

Camper Van Beethoven performs again tonight (Jan 10) at Bowery Ballroom. Jonathan Segel and Victor Krummenacher perform solo sets at Pianos on Sunday Night (Jan 11).

Bearsuit to Perform at SXSW (March 13-22) – Need Sponsors

January 9, 2009
By

[Bearsuit at NYCTaper CMJ Showphoto by subinev]

By all accounts, British alterna-pop wizards Bearsuit killed at CMJ. On their triumphant return to the U.S. after an immigration issue in 2007, Bearsuit played NYC in early October, and then toured the east and midwest before they returned for a week of outstanding CMJ shows. Now they want to return to the U.S.!

Today Bearsuit posted a request for their MySpace friends seeking sponsorship for an appearance at SXSW 2009:

Dear bear buddies,
We are looking for a kind hearted soul or lucrative business person to sponsor us to go to SXSW in March this year.
We are prepared to wear any clothes, drink any caffiene, fizz or alcohol based beverages, eat any fast foods, and generally endorse any product you may have.
We are welcome to offers. We will not do: drugs mule, sex trafficking, personal humiliation…
x

Help them out, will ya? Perhaps they will even return to NYC if we do!

In other Bearsuit news, they performed live on the BBC earlier this week. Listen [here].

Pierce Turner: St. Patrick’s Day at Joe’s Pub + City Winery Gig with Philip Glass

January 8, 2009

Last year, Ireland’s premiere “celtic soul” singer-songwriter Pierce Turner performed his St. Patrick’s Day show at the authentic pub Puck Fair — and the size of the crowd was pressed against the walls in complete capacity. This year, the ever-popular show will be moved to Joe’s Pub where ticket sales will guarantee a limited entrance. Pierce is warning fans to buy early because this show will most certainly sell out, as many of his prior non-holiday Joe’s Pub shows have done. If the 7 p.m. show is indeed sold out, there is an open slot at 9 p.m. to add a late show, so all hope is not lost.

This is not yet formally announced, but Pierce Turner will also appear as a pianist at a special event at City Winery on April 5, 2009 as part of Philip Glass‘s ongoing series of performances at that new venue. A bit of trivia — the piano that sits in Pierce’s living room in his NYC home was a gift from Philip Glass upon the completion of Turner’s solo debut It’s Only A Long Way Across, which was produced by Glass. At this point, City Winery has only announced that Suzanne Vega will also perform at this event, but expect Turner to be added soon.

Phish Summer Tour Announced Today

January 8, 2009
By

Alright, so we’re going to keep harping on this. We broke this story last August and while some people were appreciative of the news, we took a lot of crap here and elsewhere for posting all the way back in Summer of 2008 the news that Phish would tour in the Summer of 2009.

Today, finally, officially, we have our news confirmed. The Phish summer tour dates are posted at phish.com. Local dates include two at Jones Beach and one show in Camden. No NYC shows announced…yet.
