The beautiful thing about seeing a Tom Carter-related project is you never quite know what you’re going to get, but you know it will be transportive. It could be anything from his trio set with Chris Corsano and Carter Thornton late last year, to his ambient/drone work with Barry Weisblat, to one of his haunting solo guitar sets — whatever you see, you will be glad you did. On this night, we saw one of Carter’s best-loved projects, Eleven Twenty Nine, originally a collaboration with fellow guitarist Marc Orleans which has yielded an impressive album on Northern Spy Records and a followup on Drawing Room Records.

For this special performance at Trans-Pecos, Carter and Orleans were joined by Jimy SeiTang on bass and Rob Smith on drums, both of whom have seen time in our favorites Rhyton. The set consisted of three distinct improvisational pieces, each a rich, engaging tapestry of sound that blended the aesthetics of rock, free jazz and ambient music in the way for which these players have become known. What is an undulating, complex beast of a song, composed improvisationally out of many disciplines becomes a transcendent whole. Witness, for example, the climactic guitar at the end of the first piece, or the subtle, searching quality to the beginning of the last. You can certainly enjoy hearing it happen on a recording, but seeing these guys do their thing live is without parallel.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK22 microphones up front, Naiant X-X microphones onstage, and a soundboard feed. The sound quality is outstanding. Enjoy!

Chris Forsyth & Loren Connors: August 10, 2016 Secret Project Robot

What we got to see last week at Secret Project Robot was one of those rare one-off performances that neither fan nor artist forgets. For Chris Forsyth, a longtime favorite of this site, Loren Connors is a foundational figure, one of the reasons he plays the way he does. Connors’ influence on modern guitar is boundless; I’d recommend reading Marc Masters and Grayson Haver Currin’s Out Door piece for a proper primer. You can imagine, then, the anticipation that Chris felt in being able to collaborate with his hero on this improvisational set. Connors began alone, creating a pensive, curious soundscape. The piece evinced Connors’ oft-cited unpredictability, with an alien, searching quality that laid the perfect base for Forsyth’s entry into the mix. Together, the pair created something wholly theirs, a piece whose periodic squalls recall the summer thunderstorms of the past couple weeks. Needless to say, this is a moment that won’t be repeated, and we’re thrilled to have captured it.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK4V microphones directly in front of the artists. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Dinosaur Jr.: August 5, 2016 Rough Trade NYC

Any story about Dinosaur Jr. in New York really must start with the shows that didn’t appear on this site — the band’s singular string of seven shows at Bowery Ballroom back in December of 2015 (they’re going to be officially released in some form). There, the band celebrated the thirtieth anniversary of their debut album — an extraordinary feat for almost any act, even more of one for a band who some would argue didn’t hit their commercial potential even during the heyday of their style of music. Joined by an all-star roster of guests every night, J. Mascis, Lou Barlow, and Murph proved how much they’ve meant, and continued to mean, to the music that’s been made during their run. That old saw about being defined by the company you keep? There’s a reason for it.

Which brings us to this much more intimate show at Rough Trade NYC, on the heels of the band’s latest tour with fellow late 80s/90s stalwarts Jane’s Addiction. These homecoming nights are always fun, giving a band a chance to unwind in front of friends after a touring slog. The band rewarded us with some first-time playings of their just-released new record, Give A Glimpse of What Yer Not, which could as easily be the mantra of a band whose consistency and quality has been remarkable through lineup changes and a hiatus. If their first shot at “Goin’ Down” was a little rough (in Barlow’s opinion, anyway), the crowd wasn’t bugged by it, as the band showed off the new album tracks alongside many of their best-loved favorites, including their biggest commercial hit, “Feel the Pain.” Of course, the diehards were there for the older classics like “Freak Scene,” “Gargoyle” and “The Lung,” as well as my personal favorite, the night’s closer of “Out There.” If it wasn’t a two-plus hour bonanza of rare tracks and guest stars, this show was closer to what any band really wants to be about — enduring classics played to enduring fans, in a set that proves that their new material is just as vital as the old. After some much-needed rest, I’m sure we’ll see them back at it to tour the new record in full. We’ll be there.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK5 cardiod microphones in our usual spot in the venue with an Aeta PSP3 preamp for extra clarity. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Oneida: July 30, 2016 Secret Project Robot

Oneida used to share a building in Williamsburg with the DIY art institution Secret Project Robot — a relationship we documented both at the band’s private studio space, and at a series of farewell shows for the group at that location. While the band and SPR physically went their separate ways, the two remained united in ethos, and Oneida have remained a fixture at SPR events since. This summertime performance — held indoors because of rain — was yet another farewell to Secret Project Robot, which will be relocating from its Melrose Street location in Bushwick to a new frontier this fall. It was fitting, then, that Oneida helmed the sendoff, joined by some of the strongest local bands going, including Guerilla Toss and Honey.

This set was dominated by the band’s “Preteen Weaponry” three-part song, as well as fairly concise versions (by Oneida standards) of “Bad Habit” and “Economy Travel.” As the band’s cryptic sounds filled the repurposed warehouse space, walls covered in trippy 90s-referencing images (Bart Simpson, Ninja Turtles), it was yet another reminder of what spaces like Secret Project Robot mean to the people who frequent them, and what they mean to cities in general. Even if you’re not one of the proud freaks and weirdos (I don’t think of those as insults) who hangs out there, even if you’ve never set foot in a place like it, Secret Project Robot has had an effect on your city, and in a sense, on who you are. Spaces like this are for the true creators, the ones whose utter abandonment of the expected opens up whole new zones of the possible. And as long as there are these spaces, and the people in them, we will be a better place for it.

But a space like Secret Project Robot isn’t a warehouse or an address — it’s an idea. And we look forward to what they will do next.

So So Glos: July 16, 2016 Out In The Streets Fest

There may not be another band whose influence and work ethic has done more to establish the music of Brooklyn over the last ten years than So So Glos. The band was the original tenant of the Market Hotel, and later established Shea Stadium — two venues still open today that support and incubate local music. As an active touring band, So So Glos have performed across the globe with a large variety of bands and recorded and released five full length albums.

Kamikaze (Votiv Records) is the latest So So Glos release and it may be their most fully realized album. The album appears three years after the breakthrough of Blowout, but continues in the same vein of offering intelligent and aggressive punk which is both faithful to the genre and to the borough that produced the band. So So Glos headlined the first night of Out In The Streets Fest and were afforded the opportunity to play a full set. A healthy crowd remained throughout the day in the good and bad weather and by the time the Glos took the stage and the band commandeered everyone inside, the tent filled up and their energetic set was a great send-off to a terrific day. The band performed much of the last two albums in a set that began with a burst of energy and never let up.

I recorded this set in the same manner as the Guerilla Toss set from the same day of the Festival and the sound quality is superb. Enjoy!
