A Place To Bury Strangers: July 16, 2017 Out In The Street Festival

It was ten years ago when A Place To Bury Strangers broke. It was during that small window of time when blogs were tastemakers and willy-nilly determined random band flavors of the month. Except when it came to APTBS, their talent and depth were hard to get wrong. This was a band whose intensity was clear and whose ability to project a wall of sound was magnified by Oliver Ackermann’s world class pedal business. The Death By Audio pedal company pre-dated and survived the venue of the same name and the electroncic wizardry and meticulous and inventive craft propelled noise makers of all shapes and sizes, but none more directly than APTBS.

The second day of the annual Out In The Streets Fest was headlined by APTBS and the band came prepared. Before doors even opened for the day, Oliver spent several minutes playing with gadgets in the middle of the floor and he and bassist Dion Lunadon did some neat improv. Hours later in the pitch dark APTBS began their sonic assault and did not let up for the better part of an hour. The band last released an album in 2015 (Transfixiation on Dead Oceans) and several of those songs were featured in the set. But there also seemed to be a handful of newer songs that may feature on an upcoming release. At least it seems that APTBS is gearing up for recording and working out the material on the road — their packed tour schedule cuts through most of Europe through September, October and part of November (dates here). This band still very much has the intensity that first brought them into prominence and this set was our confirmation of that fact. We’ll be back when they return to the US.

I recorded this set with the Neumann large diaphragm cardioids mounted in the center of the floor in front of the soundboard and mixed with an excellent feed from the board. This set was intensely loud and the band was plentiful in its use of effects, so there are some moments where the mix is rough, but overall this is an excellent representation of a tremendous set. A Place to Bury Strangers: March 3, 2017 Villain

Two years on from their tour de force performance at Music Hall of Williamsburg and the release of their last album, Transfixiation, A Place to Bury Strangers found themselves at the faux-DIY venue Villain doing what they’ve done best in years past, while looking also to the future. If the controlled chaos of set opener “We’ve Come So Far” took on a different meaning in 2017, it also felt like it took on a greater one. APTBS vets know what to expect from their shows at this point — a blanket of noise anchored by Oliver Ackermann’s guitars (his expertise in pedals comes in handy), almost always at maximum intensity, a delightfully disorienting light show — and their Brooklyn shows reflect the communal vibe among those people.

As it has been a couple years since their last record (though they did just release a new song), I was unfamiliar with several of the (what I think were new) songs played, but the distinction for most of us was minimal. An APTBS show is less about this or that song than the overall experience, the subtle shifts in texture and tempo, the often-dark lyrics that you at-times strain to hear, the relentlessness of Ackermann (in particular) onstage, as he smashes the hell out of his guitar long before the end of the set. Where the last APTBS show found the band playing on the Music Hall floor, this time the band took advantage of Villain’s layout and performed a more electronic-driven closing sequence of four songs from the balcony. When the beats finally stopped, you couldn’t help but feel a little bit lighter, a bit freer. At some point “cathartic” might start to feel like an overused term in these times, but in these first months, it’s still a very accurate one.

I recorded this set with a soundboard feed combined with Schoeps MK41V microphones from the audience. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

A Place to Bury Strangers are one of several bands that incubated in the scene (and the sound) that grew up around Death By Audio and its line of effects pedals, making it fitting that they headlined Music Hall of Williamsburg just months after that venue’s untimely end. Though the band arrived on the scene just over ten years ago (in 2003), it feels like it’s been eons in musical terms. Today, their dark tone, blown out guitar sound, and relentless, ambitious live show feels vaguely foreign to the current indie mainstream, but that is as it should be. This kind of music may or may not always be a “trend”, but it will always have the ability to seize a crowd, and keep it.

It’s fitting that the band opened with “We’ve Come So Far”: The number comes from Transfixiation, the brand-new album whose release was being celebrated that night, and it also describes this band’s history. With only one consistent member throughout (frontman Oliver Ackermann), the now-trio has continued to hone a sound much more consistent than its personnel changes would suggest. From the obvious MBV homage of their self-titled 2007 debut, the band has both added layers and stripped them away, leaving them at the more tightly focused Transfixiation, which takes a few steps back from the wall of noise to find some new melodies — and a bit of extra weirdness — underneath.

Not that you’d have been able to tell at the album release show. From the first peals of guitar noise to the militaristic percussion of “So Far Away”, the band blanketed itself in noise, barely pausing between songs. Ackerman, drummer Robi Gonzalez and bassist Dion Lunadon were only intermittently visible in a sea of smoke, pierced by a frenetic light show and backed by abstract visuals. Ackermann and Lunadon hurled themselves around the stage as a mosh pit that churned below them; this was no polite Tuesday night show. It might be fair to say you can’t really get APTBS until you’ve seen them live, or at least, it’s very hard to convey the feeling of their music through a home stereo or some iPhone headphones. APTBS’ sound demands darkness, attention and crowd participation to fully land, and over and over on this night, it did.

Band and crowd literally became one during the encore portion of the set, when the band set up just in front of the venue’s soundboard to play three more songs as the audience closed in around them, the flashes of smartphone cameras replacing the strobe lights that had been up on the stage. If it didn’t quite replicate the intimacy of Death By Audio, it showed that this band deserved to grow to a level well beyond it, and to keep going. They’re the kind of band live music was made for, and they did right by us tonight.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK41 supercardiod microphones set up inside the soundboard cage. APTBS’ FOH, Lex, was in charge of the house mix. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!
