Nest Egg: September 7, 2017 Hopscotch Music Festival (Raleigh, NC)

Like any well-curated music festival, Hopscotch is very much an national and even global gathering, bringing in bands who otherwise might not make Raleigh, North Carolina one of their tour stops. But as much as Hopscotch should be celebrated for the riches it brings to the hometown crowd, it’s equally if not more responsible for giving a bigger platform to local and regional talent. To wit, on a stage that found Oh Sees and The Brian Jonestown Massacre headlining the night, the festival placed one of my favorite new bands of the festival, Asheville, North Carolina’s Nest Egg. With a dark, krautrock-inspired sound, Nest Egg went perfectly with the spooky light show and the “basement” (the giant bottom floor of the Raleigh Convention Center) setting. It’s hard to fully capture the effect of seeing this band live, but in person, the difference between them and the “merely OK” was evident; their sound is driving and delivered with precision, and that amplifies the already-considerable intensity of their music. In that respect, they remind me in a good way of the recently-disbanded Disappears, a longtime favorite of ours. Have a look at Nest Egg’s current material, and be on the lookout for future stuff from this outstanding band.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK41V microphones inside the soundboard cage, coupled with a soundboard feed. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Tashi Dorji: September 11, 2015 Hopscotch Music Festival (Raleigh, NC) – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

It’s no secret to followers of this site that we are big guitar fans — we’ve covered the heroes of the new American guitar movement, from the neo-traditionalists to the most avant-garde experimenters, with some regularity. Tashi Dorji, currently of Asheville, NC, is one of the finest in the latter category, and we finally got a chance to check him out live at the Hopscotch Music Festival, where in addition to his set with Elisa Ambrogio and Ben Chasny earlier in the day, he delivered a mesmerizing set at the Kennedy Theatre later that night. As Dorji progresses through the set, you almost forget that he is improvising every note, or that he is just one player, alone onstage. Dorji, even more than most, has forged his own path in life, teaching himself the guitar in his home country of Bhutan before he moved to the United States for college. Once here, he moved beyond the stratified realm of traditional rock into the alien terrain he occupies now, where he rarely if ever plays what the traditional boundaries of music require. “Alien” could describe the sounds of this set as well, as Dorji turns a single guitar into a mini-orchestra of sound, with insect-like finger-picked high notes combining with looping bass notes to create a wall of sound. The Kennedy Theatre is a perfect venue for this sort of thing — it can get dark in there, very dark, and it is cool and spacious enough to allow listeners to sprawl on the floor, eyes on the lone-lit player, bathed in music. Dorji has released several notable records, particularly this year’s Appa on the Asheville label Bathetic, but watching him create live gives a much clearer understanding of his magic. He did all of this with just one guitar and four pedals, and even watching it live, you couldn’t quite grasp where it all came from.

I recorded this set with a soundboard feed from the always-excellent NC-based engineer Wayne, together with Audio Technica 4051 microphones. The sound quality is outstanding. Enjoy!

Daniel Bachman: May 24, 2015 Union Pool – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

So far, 2015 has been a banner year for solo guitar records, with new releases from Daniel Bachman and Tashi Dorji plus the upcoming new Chuck Johnson record—just to name a few that I’m excited about. With the recently-released River, Daniel Bachman has somehow managed to out-do last year’s incredible Orange Co. SerenadeIt’s no accident the North Carolina transplant has released those two records on a couple of the state’s most prestigious labels—River on Three Lobed and Orange Co. Serenade on Bathetic. (And indeed no accident that Chuck Johnson’s Crows in the Basilica came out on Three Lobed and Tashi Dorji’s Appa came out on Bathetic, to further the connection to like-minded guitarists and labels.)

Bachman headlined an incredible bill of solo folk guitarists at Union Pool a few weeks back—the show, organized by Jeff Conklin/Avant Ghetto, also featured North Carolina songstress Sarah Louise, L.A.’s Itasca (Kayla Cohen), and Belgium’s Ignatz (Bram Devens). Bachman’s set treats us to songs off both River and Orange Co. Serenade, including two covers: “Levee” by Jack Rose and “Old Country Rock” by William Moore, giving us a good idea of who he sees as his forebears. Bachman may be young among the crowd of solo guitarists, but already can be counted among the genre’s greats. I have no doubt we’ll be seeing more great things from him.

I recorded this set with the AKGs clamped to the balcony and a board feed from Union Pool FOH, Kevin. There’s a little bit of ambient noise from the crowd and bar here—including one very exuberant fan—but Bachman’s guitar is loud and crystal clear. Enjoy!

Thanks to Jeff for organizing the event and inviting us down to record it. Avant Ghetto will presenting another show full of guitar worship at Union Pool on August 2 with PG Six, Chuck Johnson, Alan Licht, and Anthony Pasquarosa.

High Aura’d: September 6, 2013 Hopscotch Music Festival, Long View Center (Raleigh, NC) – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

With High Aura’d, the multi-talented John Kolodij creates sonic landscapes with an understated energy. This set at Long View Center — pretty much the home base for much of the drone/ambient and less-noisy avant-garde music during Hopscotch Music Festival — began with the sound of crickets. Washes of guitar and other sound began to ebb and flow underneath. The repetition was hypnotic, slightly dangerous, as if we were about to enter a world we did not know. As the undertones of bass throbbed beneath, Kolodij faced the crowd through the blackness. The intensity of the guitars crested to a torrent of noise, while the crickets kept chirping. Something had entered that dark little world.

That was just the first of three songs, each long-form compositions. Two of these songs are brand-new — newer, even than the band’s latest 7″, a split with Blood Bright Star. The middle song, “Methodist Bells,” appears on High Aura’d’s outstanding 2012 release Sanguine Futures, on the Asheville, North Carolina-based Bathetic Records. Look for at least one of these tracks on High Aura’d’s next LP release on Bathetic, date TBD.

Friend of the site David Schwentker recorded this set with a direct soundboard feed. The sound quality is outstanding. Enjoy!
