The fit seems natural — a band called Taper’s Choice and our website devoted to recording and sharing live concerts. It also helps that these folks have long been friends of the site and featured many times on our pages in their other configurations. When we caught TC’s NYC debut in April at the Sultan Room, I was unable to attend and Eric expertly captured an extraordinarily full set of heat. On this night TC opened for another site long-time friend Animal Collective (recording coming soon), so we caught an abbreviated Choice set.

As the threat of a Summer storm rolled in, the band’s set time was also moved up, but all was still well in the world as TC took the stage in the gorgeous daylight air with a like-minded crowd ready for a special night. We’ve always loved Dave Harrington’s guitar playing and in this quartet he has the room to breathe and to shine and on this night he did just that. But this band is about four masterful musicians playing off each other and realizing the magic of improvisation. And in that regard, this brief but powerful set was a clear success.

I recorded this set with the Neumann hypers directly in front of the soundboard tent and the sound in the venue was fabulous, which translates perfectly to this recording. Enjoy!

Billing themselves as “Not the Jam Band We Need But the Jam Band We Deserve,” Taper’s Choice are somewhat mysterious newcomers to the scene—and they’re sure having fun with it. Here’s what we know: the band is a jam supergroup comprised of Dave Harrington (Darkside), Chris Tomson (Vampire Weekend), Alex Bleeker (Real Estate), and Zach Tenorio (Arc Iris). Beyond that scant info, it wasn’t until recently that tunes have emerged. Previously available only at merch tables at the band’s few California shows earlier this year, the cassette-only Choice Tapes Vol. 1 circulated word-of-mouth for a while before finally landing on Bandcamp along with Choice Tapes Vol. 2. (I hear Vol. 3 is in the works.) Songs on the tapes are titled only with single or double curly quotes on both volumes but if you listen hard maybe you’ll hear some similarities to jams circulating in “trader” circles on the Live Music Archive.

We were fortunate to get invited out to the band’s exclusive (and sold out) first show in New York (or Jam Hollywood to those in the know). Two sets under the stars at Brooklyn’s Sultan Room (one of the premier destinations for jams in the borough) and we were sold 100% on Taper’s Choice. These guys even have their own festival! Take that Phish. And go buy some tickets to Choice Fest.

These are the types of nights that NYC music aficionados live for. A one-time-only live improvisation session by a group of five local stellar musicians in an intimate setting, who could really ask for more. Local guitar wizard Dave Harrington has made a nice career playing with a variety of musicians, and indeed bassist Spencer Zahn, horn player Stuart Bogie, and percussionist Joe Russo all performed at the release shows in February for Dave’s 2019 release Pure Imagination, No Country.

This night at Nublu though was a truly collaborative effort by the quintet (also including guitarist Jonathan Goldberger) as each segment of the set was improvised. Harrington revealed to me in between sets that there was one point where he and Zahn began to riff on a piece they had rehearsed earlier that week, but for the most part these tracks are all the work of expert musicians using their interpretive skills in real time. The result is two hours of breathtaking wholly unique music that was both a joy to hear live and will forever be a thoroughly engaging listen.

Dave Harrington returns to Nublu on July 19 for another night of magic with his Merry Pranksters (members this time are secret!), and attendance is highly recommended.

I recorded this set from a spot about 15 feet from the stage with the Schoeps cards and the sound (other than a little chatter) is superb. Enjoy!

Dave Harrington and Merry Pranksters: January 21, 2017 Trans-Pecos

Dave Harrington’s career as an exemplary musician is perhaps most well known through his Darkside duo with Nicholas Jaar, but in the last couple of years Harrington has excelled as a compiler of ad hoc super groups under the moniker “Merry Pranksters”. The band has performed at Rough Trade and multiple times at Nublu, but on Saturday night at Trans-Pecos Harrington pulled together another impressive group of performers in a benefit show for Builders Of The New World — an Actor’s Studio program to benefit homeless youth.

On Saturday, the “special guest” for this version of the Merry Pranksters was Cibo Matto’s Miho Hatori, whose eerie vocals and keyboard work were featured prominently in the first half of the improvised number that began the set. Hatori’s work set the tone for the entire set, which was comprised of spacey atmospheric improv that occasionally reached inspired crescendos. The sextet was held together by a diverse rhythm section with Mauro Refosco on a variety of percussion instruments, Spencer Zahn on bass, and Harrington’s solo band’s drummer Samer Ghadry behind the kit. Lars Horntveth of the Norwegian prog fusion band Jaga Jazzist played a variety of horns and his contributions to this night were sublime and tasty. Harrington’s guitar work anchored the group and provided a significant amount of color to the mix. This was our first experience with Harrington’s Merry Pranksters, but I can guarantee it won’t be the last.

This show was a benefit for The Builders of The New World: Education and Community Building Program for Homeless Children and At-Risk Youth in New York City. Donate [HERE], or donate through a download of this recording. All proceeds to this recording that are donated through Bandcamp will be forwarded directly to Builders of The New World.

I recorded this set with the Schoeps cards at the stage lip and mixed with a board feed. The sound quality is quite excellent. Enjoy!
