Thou: January 7, 2017 Saint Vitus

Thou’s return to NYC last week was a wealth of riches for their fans. The band played three full sets in less than forty-eight hours, including two sold-out shows at Saint Vitus and one matinee show at Silent Barn. In a way, the band was making up for lost time. Thou has been somewhat inactive since the best-of-year success of their 2014 album HeathenCrave, for example, gave the album a perfect score. We saw the Vitus show early on that tour and it was a superb night of Heathen material that pre-dated the album’s release by two days and started off a tremendously successful year.

Nearly three years later, Thou’s doom metal music continues to be intense and sprinkled with funny between-song banter and fan interaction. But at the second night at Saint Vitus, the music consisted of primarily new songs book-ended by two fantastic Nirvana covers. The new material is clearly strong and if developed live, we expect that the band’s anticipated 2017 release will equal Heathen’s quality.

Thou will be touring often this year, with shows posted on their website through July, dates [HERE].

I recorded this set with the Schoeps on a stand in front of the soundboard and mixed with a feed from the board. The sound quality is superb. Enjoy!

MAKE: September 9, 2016 Hopscotch Music Festival, Pour House (Raleigh, NC)

MAKE represent another of my favorite recent finds from the Triangle in North Carolina. The three-piece, consisting of Scott Endres, Luke Herbst and Spencer Lee, make the kind of intense, loud-as-hell, but thoughtful metal that, with doom, black, and stoner elements, and a decent dose of flat-out classic rock, puts them in a category beyond a single niche scene. Like more than a few bands in the area, MAKE has been fighting hard against North Carolina’s bigoted HB2 law, including with their most on-the-nose contribution, the song “Human Garbage,” featuring Governor Pat McCrory’s face on the cover. That song made the rotation during this Hopscotch Music Festival show at the Pour House in Raleigh, which remains one of the best places in the area to see heavy music.

The band’s performance, kicking off the night in the venue, shook the rafters with Endres and Lee’s deep riffage, bringing the heaviest elements of the band’s sound to the fore. That’s in keeping with their latest album, Pilgrimage of Loathing, which (perhaps reflecting their view of the political situation) is a harder-edged and more rage-fueled affair than 2015’s The Golden Veil, which keeps company at many points with an entirely different group of bands (Sleep, Om, Arbouretum) than the references you might hear on Pilgrimage. The juxtaposition was thrilling live — experience the whip-turn from “The Somnabulist” and “Human Garbage” to “The Absurdist” and “The Architect” from The Golden Veil. It showed, in a relatively short set, how versatile, and how enjoyable, this band can be, and one would hope to see them around this part of the world (paging Saint Vitus) sooner rather than later.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK4V at the soundboard booth. The vocals are a bit quieter than I would like in the recording, but otherwise this is an excellent representation of this band. Check out Pilgrimage of Loathing on bandcamp, which is also streaming below, and the band’s other records. Enjoy!

Throughout their career Thou has been very prolific band, but their new album Heathen is actually the band’s first full length in four years and the first music they’ve released in over a year. The album is a powerful work that combines the band’s traditional doom metal with elements of shoegaze and post-rock to create a masterful work where the music truly compliments Thou’s lyrical vision. The tour reached NYC last week and we caught the Sunday night show at Saint Vitus. The band’s set consisted of five of the seven full songs from Heathen and despite some humorous in between song requests, it seemed as if the sold-out crowd was with them the whole way. Thou are currently on tour across the country throughout April but will return to NYC in July for several local shows.

I recorded this set with the Sennheisers mounted in front of the soundboard and mixed with a board feed. The sound quality is superb. Enjoy!

sunn O))): September 8, 2012 Hopscotch Festival (Raleigh, NC) – FLAC / MP3 / Streaming

It makes sense that sunn O))) are named after Sunn amps, because the many Sunn amps onstage with them get a punishing workout during their sets. Raleigh’s Memorial Auditorium proved to be one of the most challenging rooms for bands at this year’s Hopscotch Music Festival; its size and cavernous design threatened to swallow the sound of several of the acts who played there. But for the doom metal pioneers and their slow, hypnotic wall of sound, the mid-sized auditorium was child’s play. As they prefer it, sunn O))) took the stage shrouded in a wall of smoke, the silhouettes of the black robed players barely visible. sunn O))) doesn’t need to give you much to see, though, as their music communicates on a more visceral level – that is, by rattling your guts with their bass-driven, low-tuned guitars and periodic paganistic chants. For this set, there was no percussion involved, and for the uninitiated, there were no obvious discernible songs – again, as the masters prefer it. A sunn O))) show is not so much as a “concert” as a holistic experience, as if you’ve joined the band in a dark ritual that will give them, for an hour and a half or so, your undivided attention and near-catatonic rapture. A scan of tweets during the show revealed a mixture of awe and fear among the show’s participants; sunn O))) is not for the faint of heart. The Hopscotch Festival was meant to reflect the impeccable and unique musical tastes of its co-founders, and I think it’s safe to say that co-founder Grayson Currin‘s predilection for “heaviest music” was satisfied by having sunn O))) close out the third successful run of this festival.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK5 cardiod microphones in the optimal location in the venue. This is an outstanding recording and perhaps my favorite quality-wise of the entire festival. Enjoy!
