White Fence: August 13, 2011 Bowery Ballroom – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

One of the real joys of seeing live shows is seeing an opening band that just blows you away. That was the case with this opening set from White Fence on a stacked Bowery Ballroom bill led by NYCTaper favorites Woods. White Fence’s records are the solo effort Tim Presley, who also does time in the Strange Boys and Darker My Love, so for this show his backing band consisted of Nick Murray on Drums, and two members of Woods (Jarvis and Kevin), who handled Presley’s material as capably as if it were their own. Presley brings a Dylanesque vocal turn to his garage-psych songs, but the laid-back vibe of the songs doesn’t mean the playing isn’t also top notch, particularly Presley’s guitar work. The band’s entire set brought the rapidly-packing room to peak energy level, climaxing with jammed-out version of “Sticky Fruitman Has Faith” that was worthy of the night’s headliner in its ambitious scope. Whatever Presley’s other commitments musically, I hope he makes this project a priority, as White Fence is a can’t-miss band on any bill they’re on.

We recorded this set in the same manner as the Woods set, and the results are similarly outstanding. Enjoy!

Minerva Lions: August 7, 2011 BBS at the Richardson – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

After a great set by Teletextile at the temporarily-related Backyard Brunch Sessions at The Richardson, Minerva Lions played an inspired set that showed off their soulful side, and debuted a new song to boot. The band has a classic, but updated sound that incorporates elements of folk, alt-country and rock; if you hear a little Wilco in them, that’s not such a bad thing. Lead vocalist Jared Samuel has a compelling, easy to like voice that can deliver laid-back phrasing, as on the opener “Megrims”, as easily as the deep blues of their cover of “Bring It On Home to Me” by Sam Cooke. Songwriting, as ever, is key, though, and Minerva Lions are on point there, too, with songs that are instantly memorable. Even in a four-song set, we saw several sides of the band stylistically, with the organ-dominated songs like the newly-debuted “You & Yr Arrow” giving a very different vibe than the more straight-ahead guitar sounds of songs like “Megrims.” Even without the backyard, Minerva Lions gave us a lovely, all-American music experience for a warm summer afternoon.

Deerhunter: August 23, 2011 Webster Hall – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

The first show I saw by the ultra-talented recording artist Bradford Cox was an Atlas Sound set at the ATP New York music festival in 2009. It was a disaster. Consisting mostly of pedal troubles and tuning woes that took up more than half the set, with Bradford apologizing profusely, it didn’t live up to the promise of the recorded material. So, despite the unique, compelling sound of Bradford’s records, I was reluctant about the live show – even though both Deerhunter and Atlas Sound have been featured on this site many times (albeit not my recordings).

This Deerhunter show at Webster Hall erased my doubts – and made me kick myself for not going to see this band sooner. This show was one of the best I have seen this year, with Bradford confidently, brilliantly owning his instrument, his voice, and the stage. Deerhunter is rock music – popular(ish) rock music, at least – at its bleeding edge, where Radiohead used to be, creating an entirely new sound from the tools that have (mostly) been there for rock’s 40+ years. This show kicked off with the anthemic “Fluorescent Grey”, featuring original bandmember Colin Mee, who stuck around for the first five songs. The band spent the entire show bathed in green light, with Cox commanding a visceral torrent of sound. The band’s live sound feels like a living, breathing thing – an alien form that surges, crackles, crinkles and trills. The band’s best songs on this night were otherworldly: “Nothing Ever Happened” morphed into an extended jam, with Cox melding in some of Patti Smith’s “Land”. “Twilight at Carbon Lake”, closing the main set, held us in rapture. Almost the entire show was seamless, with extended guitar loops and chirps filling in between songs. The show ended with “Calvary Scars II”, which bled into an extended loop that terminated as the lights went up.

As this show ended, I understood what had happened at ATP a few years ago. Cox may not always be perfect – someone as prolific, as ambitious as he is almost can’t be. But he is the kind of artist whose excesses must not only be tolerated, but celebrated – this creator needs every encouragement we can give him to create and succeed. And when he does succeed, you get a night like this night: phenomenal.

I recorded this set from the center of the floor with the DPA microphones. I spent a great deal of time post-processing and was rewarded with an excellent recording than is free of unnecessary crowd chatter almost throughout. No recording can match the experience of being at a show like this – but turn this up, and you might get close. Enjoy!

Woods: August 13, 2011 Bowery Ballroom – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Full Set

We caught Woods this summer in the unlikely Northside Festival venue of St. Cecilia’s Roman Catholic Church (that recording here), but it was an equally special treat to see them play the best-sounding venue in Manhattan, Bowery Ballroom. Although the set hewed fairly closely to what we saw back in June, no two Woods shows are alike, and indeed, the jam-heavy favorites “Bend Beyond” and “I Was Gone” took different directions than they did back at St. Cecilia’s. We also got a huge treat in the form of the band’s cover of the Graham Nash tune “Military Madness” as their final song. As at St. Cecilia’s, the band added an organ player to give them a bigger, more psychedelic sound, and the Bowery’s sound system was mixed to perfection.

Befitting the high quality sound in the room, we came out with a lot of high quality gear to record this show, including a soundboard feed and two sets of mics. The result is undoubtedly our best recording of Woods to date. Enjoy!

Sonic Youth: August 12, 2011 Williamsburg Waterfront – FLAC / MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

Sonic Youth long ago reached that rare point in an artist’s career when they can do exactly whatever they want, whenever they want.  Two great  examples happened last week: a day after they released two incredible tracks on the glowingly-reviewed vinyl-only retrospective box set by the North Carolina imprint Three Lobed Recordings, the band dropped into the radically revamped Williamsburg waterfront and its row of luxury condos and played a set of older and rarely-played cuts.  Albums that have gone almost-untouched on recent tours saw the light of day: “Brave Men Run,” “Ghost Bitch” and (the more-commonly played) “Death Valley ’69” from Bad Moon Rising were on the menu.  Dirty – regarded, rightly or wrongly as the band’s most “commercial” record – wore its age well on an extended “Sugar Kane” and the infectious “Drunken Butterfly,” with Kim spinning round the stage like a madwoman twenty to thirty years her junior.  “Starfield Road,” from the relatively unappreciated Experimental Jet Set, Trash and No Star, made the cut, alongside classics like “Kill Yr Idols” (originally from the Kill Yr Idols EP) and “Cotton Crown” (from Sister).  Late-period material similarly seemed at home; “What We Know” sounded just as vital among these gems as it has at recent shows where the band played almost exclusively new material.  And, for good measure, the band’s second encore (of three) was the title track to Thurston’s mid-90s solo effort, Psychic Hearts.  Other than their deep-as-shit discography, Sonic Youth don’t feel like a “classic” band, with energy, enthusiasm and intensity that could put most crews of 22-year-olds to shame.  They can carry a show and rule the night anywhere in this city – be it United Palace, Terminal 5, Music Hall, or an outdoor stage facing the bright lights of Manhattan.

The show wrapped with the feral noise squall of “Inhuman,” as Moore howled at the soulless towers of steel and glass and the band’s immense blasts of feedback threatened to shake the junk to its foundations.  A lot in this world feels built on a shaky foundations these days.  Some artists have the power to remind you that some things still are real, and good, and right.  Fifty years from now, those architectural monstrosities will probably be rubble.  Sonic Youth will be a monument to their era.

Johnny Fried Chicken Boy and I recorded this set with multiple mobile rigs that were mixed together after the show (thanks to page for the help with the sync).  Hours of post-processing work have gone into making this recording sound as good as possible, given the limitations of recording an outdoor show, our location in the venue, and the enthusiasm of the crowd.  It is by no means our best capture of Sonic Youth (see the links to Terminal 5 and Music Hall above for those), but it is by far the most interesting setlist we have recorded for the site.  Samples are included, and all files are tagged for easy importing into your favorite music software.  Enjoy!

The Psychic Paramount: July 26, 2011 Union Pool – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

New York crowds are notoriously, almost epically jaded. As much as bands love the exposure of America’s largest city and cultural capital, they also tend to be dispirited by the “show me” attitude of crowds that have seen it all before. Being from Brooklyn themselves, The Psychic Paramount must know this all too well – which is why they pulled out all the stops at Union Pool on a recent Tuesday night to deliver a jaw-dropping set that was one of the most incredible I have seen this year. Cloaked for the duration in thick billows of smoke, their set, culled primarily from their latest release, II, left the crowd in awe at the vortex of sound coming from this three-man band. I don’t know that I have been to another show this year that had as many audience members actually talking about the show when it was over – and stark silent during. These instrumental songs seethe with emotion; even staring into shadows in the smoke, you can’t help but be moved by them. It doesn’t hurt, of course, that they are rendered by players of obvious talent and technical skill – bassist Ben Armstrong and guitarist Drew St. Ivany first met in the now-defunct art-noise-jazz band Laddio Bolocko, a less rock n’ roll but no less compelling outfit, and drummer Jeff Conaway is (as in most three pieces) the glue that gives the band its propulsive, driving sound. Bands like TPP are the artists that live shows were made for – even this fine recording cannot capture their brilliance. Mark your calendars, folks – their next show is September 3 right here in Brooklyn at a free show at the Aviator Sports Complex with White Hills, Pictureplane, Wise Blood and others, and after that, our friends in the UK can catch them at the always-legendary ATP Nightmare Before Christmas. Do it. They’ll blow your mind.

I recorded this set with both the DPA microphones set up in our usual spot in the venue, and a soundboard feed. At the band’s request, only the microphone portion is being used, as they felt it provided a more natural, balanced sound. Enjoy!

Disappears: July 26, 2011 Union Pool – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

Chicago’s Disappears have been together only since 2009, but they’ve accomplished a lot in that time, releasing their debut album Lux in 2010, followed this year with the stellar Guider EP, and bringing on Steve Shelley of Sonic Youth as a new member after founding drummer Graeme Gibson left to continue his work with the Fruit Bats. The band has a new record in the works, and they showed off a solid chunk of it here at Union Pool, in a set that was mostly new and unreleased material. Union Pool has been killing it all summer with great lineups of bands, but this night – with Disappears headlining and Brooklyn’s own The Psychic Paramount opening – stood out as one of the absolute best. Disappears’ new songs expand the scope of their songs just a bit, though their reverb-soaked, krautrock-meets-Velvet Underground (with a dash of the Fall) sound is still intact. But although only three of the songs (as far as I could tell) were previously released (“Halo,” “Magics” and “Marigold”) Disappears held the crowd rapt with their thick squall of guitar, with lead singer/guitarist Brian Case (also of the Ponys) singing with the echo on overdrive beneath. Expect big things from a band that, despite members’ other commitments, is hardly looking like a side project.

The inimitable troubadour Bill Callahan (who recorded through much of the 90s and half the last decade as Smog) graced us with two nights in New York, his first since his excellent June 14, 2009 Northside Festival show at Music Hall of Williamsburg back in 2009. We caught the second of the two nights of this year, at Bowery Ballroom, which as usual proved an ideal showcase for Callahan’s graceful, classic songs. With songs that scan more like free verse than typical verse-chorus-verse structures, Callahan’s style demands rapt attention, and that is what he got from the Tuesday night crowd. Drawing heavily from his latest record, this year’s Apocalypse, as well as his 2009 solo record Sometimes I Wish I Were An Eagle, Callahan gave us over 100 minutes of perfection, delivered by a different trio of musicians compared to the group he had at his disposal in 2009 that featured a string player. In this configuration, many songs drifted into psychedelic guitar jams that gave them a more sweeping scope (see the epic “Drover” mid-set, or the massive “Say Valley Maker” for example), giving the Bowery show a harder rock edge. Callahan also gave us some hard-to-deny Smog tunes, even taking requests from the crowd, with that “Say Valley Maker” probably being my personal favorite.

As a special treat, this post is a “double-header” of the Bowery show and the 2009 Music Hall of Williamsburg show, which has not appeared on the site before. I recorded the Bowery set from our usual spot in the venue, but using tiny DPA omnidirectional mics that captured the full sound of the room. The Music Hall set was recorded up front near the stage with a mobile rig. Both are excellent, though the edge on sound quality clearly goes to the Bowery show. The tracking and mastering on the MHOW show is also not quite as good. Enjoy!

I first heard Sloan (probably like a lot of people) on one of those old DGC records CD compilations that the label would put out with one Nirvana song and one Sonic Youth song as a way to get fans to check out their lesser-known acts. Probably the most memorable band on the comp not named Nirvana or Sonic Youth was Sloan, whose debut single “Underwhelmed” from their album Smeared was alternarock perfection. All of the elements of today’s band are there – the sturdy riffs, the sweet vocal harmonies that ooze unadulterated fun, all of it catchy as hell. It makes me feel old as hell to think that this Halifax, Nova Scotia band is now celebrating their twentieth year together with this tour and the release of their latest record, The Double Cross (XX, get it?).

They’ve got a lot to show for those twenty years, too – a discography full of solid records (including the new one), numerous awards and nominations, and perhaps most tellingly, the camaraderie of sharing their entire musical career with this exact same lineup. It’s difficult to make any endeavor last as long as this one has; for a rock band, it’s almost unheard of.

Taking stock of the scene at Bowery Ballroom on Wednesday night, the fact that this band has held together became a bit less of a mystery. The band have what I like to think (positively) of as a very Canadian quality – they come off onstage as agreeable, pleasant people to be around, almost completely devoid of ‘attitude’ or posturing. So agreeable, in fact, that they play their instruments democratically, giving different members a turn at different instruments, sharing songwriting as well as vocal duties. They’re the kind of band that give you the proud sensation of watching your best friend’s band make it big – you feel good for them, and you feel their goodwill for you. It goes almost without saying that the band went above and beyond with their show, delivering a set that blended new songs from The Double Cross with classics from both decades, including what was a highlight for me (having never seen it live), “Gimme That,” the straight-ahead pop anthem from 2003’s Action Pact. This Wednesday night crowd was as laid back and cool as the band itself, paying attention, partying, and singing along, letting the artists in the room take center stage.

The set went out with a great four-song package of classics, with “People of the Sky” from 1994’s Twice Removed, “The Lines You Amend” and “G Turns to D” from 1996’s One Chord to Another, and an absolutely killer closer of “Money City Maniacs” from 1998’s Navy Blues. I have to admit, I would’ve loved the nostalgia trip of hearing “Underwhelmed” as interpreted twenty years later, if for no other reason to remind how much I owed that song, and that old DGC compilation, for such a great night.

I recorded this set from my usual location in the venue with the DPA microphones and an analog preamp to give it a warm, natural sound. Combined with the Bowery’s upgraded soundboard, the results are absolutely outstanding and one of my best pure audience recordings in that venue. Enjoy!

Givers: June 18, 2011 Backyard Brunch Sessions – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

Before heading over to McCarren Park a few Saturdays ago to catch Guided By Voices and others on the Northside Festival main stage, I had the privilege of catching the inaugural show of the 2011 Backyard Brunch Sessions, starring Lafayette, LA’s Givers.  With their good attitudes and laid back vibe, I liked this band before hearing a note of their music. Having recently signed to Glassnote Records for the release of their debut album, In Light, the band are enjoying a big push in the press lately, having been nominated as “buzzworthy” by MTV, a “band to watch” by Stereogum, and written about favorably by NPR.  It’s not hard to see why; not only is this five-piece eminently likable, but their music has that “something extra.”  In this case, that something is a touch of Afrobeat that gives their music a bouncy, percussive feel.  Male lead vocalist/guitarist Taylor Gaurisco’s sweet voice is nicely paired with female lead/percussionist Tiffany Lamson’s more smoky, soulful vocal approach.  For this backyard show, the band did not have their full arsenal of instruments, which pushed the emphasis to their songwriting.  I am pleased to report that the songwriting held up to the stripped-down scrutiny, particularly their much-talked-about leadoff single “Up Up Up.”  Though this set was short, it told us all we needed to know about the talent level of this young and exciting band.

hi and lo and I recorded this set with a variety of high end microphones (pictured) miking individual band members.  The results are outstanding, possibly the best Backyard Brunch recording we have offered to date!
