Pile is one of those bands who you thought was your little secret and suddenly there are 500 people at their show. There’s something to be said for a band that grows its fanbase steadily and organically through consistently solid shows and records. Pile has existed for more than ten years and since signing to the most excellent Exploding In Sound Records in 2011, the trend has continued upward. The last couple of years have been remarkable. We saw them in 2015 at SXSW before a modest crowd and then later 2015 before a couple of hundred at Baby’s All Right. Earlier this year, we captured their sold out show at Sunnyvale. But a couple of weeks ago Pile sold out five-hundred strong at Market Hotel.

Buoyed by the band’s most recent album, the superb A Hairshirt of Purpose, Pile has finally and deservedly arrived. The Market Hotel offers a nice companion to the Pile experience, both are authentically DIY. The packed-in fans responded in kind, singing along to all of the lyrics showing true appreciation for the older obscure numbers that the band whipped out late in the set. The setlist for this show was heavy on Hairshirt material, but also delved into their self-released 2011 7″ (“Scissors”), “Pigeon Song” from the Boston Hassle compilation, and a couple of songs from the early Dripping album. We expect to see Pile again as often as possible, and hopefully at Market Hotel in the Spring or Summer.

This recording was captured by FOH Harrison utilizing the internal USB drive recording device on the Market Hotel’s Behringer X32 Soundboard. For a straight board feed from a smallish room, this recording is quite well balanced other than somewhat more prominent vocals. Enjoy!

Ovlov: June 23, 2017 The Bell House

Just when you thought it couldn’t be salvaged, here comes Ovlov to rescue Emo from the clutches of the mainstream garbage bands these kids today are listening to. (I’ll refrain from naming names.) Ovlov take me back to the nineties Emo I love with reference points like Hum, The Promise Ring, Jawbreaker and Jets to Brazil, Nada Surf—all touchstones of my high school CD collection. Naturally, they’re doing it on Exploding in Sound Records, whose taste in quality young bands is unimpeachable. This set opening for Spiral Stairs at the Bell House captures the band playing songs off their EIS album, am, plus a few new ones. Considering Ovlov have broken up at least a couple times now, it’s not insignificant that they’ve got some new songs to play us—Ovlov still clearly still have a lot of music in them.

I recorded this with the mics set up at the board in DIN stereo configuration, which I then combined with a board feed from the Bell House’s FOH David Hurtgen. A special thanks goes out to David for loaning me a mic stand so I could make this recording for you all. The sound is excellent. Enjoy!

I could yap a bunch about Big Ups and how great they are, but I’ve done that before and you already know. Okay just one thing: this is one of the best of a bunch of Big Ups shows I’ve seen, so it’s more than worth checking out. While you’re listening you can pick up Before a Million Universes from Exploding in Sound, still available on orange vinyl for you collector scum.

Pile: April 7, 2017 Sunnyvale

“Thank God for Pile”—if you listen closely, you’ll hear one zealous audience member with an enthusiasm you don’t often see for such a young band. But people really love Pile—and everyone in-the-know knows Pile are damn great. Their comparatively small but dedicated following gets bigger with each album and I daresay if you missed out on Pile this time around, I’m afraid you’ve missed the last of their shows in a small room.

On Friday, we squeezed ourselves into a packed Sunnyvale for the band’s second of two sold-out Brooklyn shows (the first was at Baby’s All Right). The thing about bands on Exploding in Sound Records is that where there’s one there’s bound to be more. Pile headlined a stacked bill featuring some current and future EIS greats: Gnarwhal, Big Ups, and Stove. Their set gets cut a bit short due to time constraints, but that only served to increase the intensity as their finale of “Rock and Roll Forever With the Customer in Mind” will attest. That tune is from 2015’s You’re Better Than This, while the rest of the set is comprised of songs off their latest album, A Hairshirt of Purpose, and their first EIS record, Dripping. Whether you’re new to the band or a longtime fan, listen to this cracking performance and be thankful for Pile.

Big Ups are a band that I keep coming back to, not only because they’re the current standard-bearers of American post-hardcore but also because they’re a vital part of the NYC/Brooklyn music scene. We’ve seen them on bills with legacy acts before, but sharing a bill with Girls Against Boys is perhaps the most appropriate of all for Big Ups, who reference the eighties and nineties DC/Dischord scene that birthed GVSB. Big Ups are a couple decades removed from that era but they’re keeping the spirit alive with their tight craft. Their latest album is Before a Million Universes on Exploding in Sound—one of best labels out there for great young bands; and whether you’re a veteran of the nineties or a younger listener, it’s more than worth your twelve bucks to grab a copy of that limited vinyl.

Big Ups: July 16, 2016 Out In the Streets Festival

Big Ups is one of the very best live bands in New York right now. At the core of that has to be the kinetic-but-controlled performance of vocalist Joe Galarraga, who reminds at times of a skinny Henry Rollins with a sense of humor. Mugging for the crowd, twisting his body into unusual positions, he never loses sight of the music or the message being delivered, which he propels at you in spoken word that rises at the right moments to scream. Brendan Finn (drums), Amar Lal (guitar) and Carlos Salguero (bass) make that performance possible, with controlled dynamics that pay as much attention to the softer interludes as to their songs’ frequent climaxes. Having seen these guys twice in 2014, promoting their first album Eighteen Hours of Static, and been blown away each time, we were eager to see where they’d gone from there.

The band’s 2016 record, Before A Million Universes, advances the conversation both lyrically and musically. At this performance at the Out In the Streets Festival, the band’s growth was evident in the current-album numbers “Contain Myself,” “Hope for Someone,” and “National Parks,” as well as a new piece that explores the soft/loud dynamic even further. On this sweltering, thunderstorm-pocked afternoon, the band commanded a friendly crowd who clearly knew them well, and made the most of the thirty minutes’ time allotted. The band’s music may be darker in tone, but Galarraga doesn’t let that get in the way of having a laugh with the crowd, or pulling faces that fall on the lighter side of serious. Even with the sun shining, by the time the set reached the band’s most straightforward hardcore number, “Goes Black,” we were all living in his world, and there was nothing else around.

In a crowded festival season, Out In the Streets is a perfect, smaller-scale local standout, with a tent to shield the bands and the music part of the crowd in the middle of Ridgewood’s historic Onderdonk House’s ample backyard, ringed with vendors, lounge chairs and picnic tables, and (not to be underestimated) plenty of bathrooms. The lineup, of course, reflected that ethos, with many of the best local acts (including Big Ups and, coming soon, Guerilla Toss) that Brooklyn fans see year-round at clubs like Shea Stadium and Baby’s All Right. It was one of those days that brought together like-minded people in a comfortable, manageable way — and gave us yet another serious jones for more Big Ups.

Pile: April 28, 2015 Baby’s All Right – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

Don’t be surprised when Pile’s latest long-player, You’re Better Than This, is all over 2015’s year-end lists. It’s the most immediately engaging record I’ve heard all year, and another winner from the folks at Exploding in Sound Records. Pile has been supporting the record with a never-ending tour, putting Rick Maguire high up on the list of hardest working musicians in the game. This Baby’s All Right show from April is their second stop in NYC this year, having previously played the grittier Palisades in February. Meanwhile, NYCTaper caught up with the band down in Austin for a short SXSW showcase set back in March (that recording here).

You’re Better Than This has put Pile on many people’s radars, but it was clear from the crowd that some people have been with Pile all along. Early adopters could be identified as the ones mouthing the words to even older songs like “Pets” from the 2010 self-released album, Magic Isn’t Real, as well as “The Browns” and “Grunt Like a Pig” from the 2012 EIS debut Dripping. Though I’m a bit newer to the band, I count myself lucky to have caught them at Baby’s—these guys won’t be playing 280-capacity rooms for long.

Baby’s FOH Harrison Fore recorded this set with a board feed and the Baby’s room mics. I mixed those two sources in post-production. The sound quality of this recording is above and beyond even Baby’s usual high standards for sound. Enjoy!

Pile: March 19, 2015 Longbranch Inn – Impose SXSW – Flac/MP3/Streaming

Thursday was my first day of SXSW this year and it was a very long day. I awoke at the crack of dawn in NYC and flew to Austin arriving around 1pm local time. The afternoon was filled with errands, a few beers, some local cuisine and then it was time to get to the Impose Magazine “Imposition” show at the Longbranch Inn on East 11th. The roster for this night was filled with fake names — bands that due to silly contractual games couldn’t be named until after playing the “official” shows on the west side of town. It was not long after we arrived that the actual bill for the night was announced and it was as we expected from these Impose shows, a fine list of current up and comers. The anchor for the night was Boston’s Pile, a band that’s not exactly new but who are finally getting the attention they deserve. By the time the band took the stage it was after 1:30 am and I was pushing 24 straight hours awake — but these guys gave me a much needed jolt of energy.

Pile began in 2009 began as Rick Maguire’s solo project before he recruited a band to tour. The band’s shows have become legendary in the Boston DIY scene, as Pile has become what’s been described as “your favorite band’s favorite band”. The band’s new album You’re Better Than This (Exploding In Sound Records) was released earlier this month. The album has its ferocious and gentle sides, a loud-soft-loud dynamic that exhibits influences that include post-punk, noise rock, and even anti-folk. I hear everything from the Minutemen through Built To Spill and of course their hometown predecessors Mission of Burma. For this short SXSW set, this live version of Pile was less about the “soft” and more about the straight ahead punk which was fine with us. The set began with three straight songs from You’re Better, and we’re streaming “The World is Your Motel” which absolutely raged. Pile is now on an extensive tour (dates here), which comes to NYC for an April 28 show at Baby’s All Right. This is a much recommended show from our viewpoint.

I recorded this set with the Sennheiser cards mounted on a stand directly in front of the soundboard and mixed with a board feed. The sound quality is quite excellent. Enjoy!

Baked: January 2, 2015 Palisades – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

You would be only half right in assuming that a band called Baked trades in hazy jams suited more to the night’s comedown than its revving up. That’s not to say they don’t do hazy jams—nine-minute set-closer “Tolex” is proof enough of that. But they also deliver some rocking indiepop that takes unexpected turns.

Baked is a Brooklyn-based quintet composed of R.J. Gordon (vocals/guitar), Davey Jones (guitar), Jeremy Aquilino (bass/vocals), Yoni David (drums), and Isabella Mingione (keys/vocals). Their debut LP, Debt, is out on Exploding in Sound Records and they’re right at home among that label’s amazingly consistent roster. I caught Baked last Friday at Palisades, headlining a stacked bill that also included Brooklyn’s Washer (that set posted here) and Connecticut’s Furnsss. For this set, Baked pull mostly from last year’s Debt, adding “8er” from their self-released, self-titled cassette, and a couple newer tracks (“I Win” and “AA”). Highlights include “Hungry Ghosts,” the aforementioned longform jam of “Tolex,” and the upfront keyboards and reverbed vocals on the rocking “Smoke Gets in Your Eyes.”

I recorded this set with the AKG cardioids at the soundboard, plus a feed from Palisades FOH Ariel. The sound is slightly rough around the edges, but authentic to the night’s experience. Enjoy!

Washer: January 2, 2015 Palisades – Flac/MP3/Streaming

Washer is the Brooklyn-based duo of Mike Quigley (guitar, bass, vocals) and Kieran McShane (drums). This past Friday night at Palisades, these econo-jammers tore through an impressive ten song set in a staggering twenty-five minutes. Their longest songs of the night barely pass the three-minute mark while their shortest, “Safe Place,” clocks in at under a minute. But what’s consistent throughout is how refreshing the songs sound, lacking any hint of pretension, artifice, or embellishment. Nothing wasted, these songs plow right into you, sink their hooks in, and don’t outstay their welcome. Only three songs from their Palisades set have so far been released: “Rinse & Spit” and “Rot” are hot off their recent split single with Big Ups, out on Exploding in Sound Records, and “Bass 1” is off last year’s self-released cassette EP, Bighead. The rest of the songs remain to be released and show loads of promise. Personal highlights include the indie-rocker “Clid,” distorted punker “Porky,” and the chilled-out “This Land.”

I recorded this set with the AKG cardioids at the soundboard, plus a feed from Palisades FOH Ariel. The sound is slightly rough around the edges, but authentic to the night’s experience. Enjoy!
