Heron Oblivion: December 9, 2018 Baby’s All Right

Last month, the East Coast got a rare dose of live Heron Oblivion action in which Brooklyn lucked into this soaring seventy-minute set that includes five new songs. Holy cow! Hard to believe it’s been nearly three years since Heron Oblivion released their self-titled record. Since then they put out The Chapel, a live album recorded in January 2017 with a new, untitled song (the same one we heard back in 2016 at Union Pool) and a cover of Doug Sahm’s “At the Crossroads.” More recently, they’ve been quietly touring a set full of new songs that hopefully will see the light of day on LP2. All signs point to more greatness to come!

I recorded this set with a pair of MBHO omnidirectional mics on stage, plus a board feed from the Baby’s crew. The sound is excellent. Enjoy!

Feral Ohms: June 24, 2017 Union Pool (Summer Thunder)

Though this was their NYC debut, Ethan Miller’s latest garage fuzzout band, Feral Ohms, began quietly releasing singles on his Silver Current label way back in 2013. What the hell took them so long? Well, Miller’s had some other stuff going on like Howlin’ Rain, Heron Oblivion, and the too-damn-short Comets on Fire reunion from that same year. So we’ll let Feral Ohms skate on their longtime absence from the East Coast. Besides, the band—that’s Miller on guitar and vocals, Josh Haynes on bass, and Chris Johnson on drums—made up for it and then some with this literally scorching Saturday afternoon outdoor set as part of Union Pool’s Summer Thunder series. They played the entire self-titled record to huge smiles all around as the packed crowd took in the sun and the tunes. Let’s hope we don’t have to wait too long before the ’Ohms come back this way again.

I recorded this with the mics set up on stage, combined with a board feed courtesy of Union Pool engineer Doug. It sounds excellent. Enjoy!

Meg Baird: January 22, 2017 Park Church Co-op

February 1, 2017
By

Finally capping off our coverage of the epic Ranaldo-Gunn-Baird tour of 2017—last but certainly not least—here’s Meg Baird’s opening set. We’ve long been fans of everything Meg Baird, from Espers to her solo work to the Baird Sisters to Heron Oblivion, but we haven’t yet had occasion to post a solo set until now. This recording captures Baird on the last date of her two-week tour with Lee Ranaldo and Steve Gunn (those sets posted here and here, respectively) and finds her playing a couple songs off her latest solo record for Drag City, Don’t Weigh Down the Light, along with a few covers: “Old Man on the Mountain” from fellow traveler P.G. Six, “Beatles and the Stones” by The House of Love, and the traditional Scottish folk song “Willie O’Winsbury.”  It’s been an emotional couple weeks for all, and Baird provides a touching introduction introduction to “Willie O’Winsbury,” describing the unique ability of traditional songs to communicate with us through time. Only a little over a week old, this set nonetheless feels like a transmission from the distant past. Our work continues… But in the meantime, feel free to accept into your life those small joys, like this gorgeous acoustic guitar set from Meg Baird.

I recorded this set from my improvised tapers section in front of board, combined with a feed from Park Church’s engineer Jasno Swarez. Despite some ambient noise from the church, the sound is very good. Enjoy—and resist!

Heron Oblivion: May 28, 2016 Union Pool

Remember that time your favorite psych-sters got together, swapped instruments, and then gigged for a couple years before releasing 2016’s best record on Sup Pop? Yeah, me too: Finally making it to New York after a series of Bay Area performances and a West Coast tour, Heron Oblivion landed in Brooklyn Saturday, forcing bearded record nerds of the Tri-State Area to abandon their Discogs wantlist for a few hours and venture out to Union Pool. In case you haven’t been following, Heron Oblivion’s not-to-be-fucked-with supergroup credentials are as follows: Meg Baird (Espers, The Baird Sisters) on drums and vocals, Ethan Miller (Comets on Fire, Howlin Rain, Feral Ohms) on bass and backing vocals, Noel Von Harmonson (Comets on Fire) on guitar, and Charlie Saufley (Assemble Head in Sunburst Sound) also on guitar. If Heron Oblivion didn’t exist already you might not be able to dream up what would happen when you combine Baird’s pastoral psych with Miller’s fiery guitar freakouts, but the result is something that achieves a rare cosmic balance. Their Union Pool set covers six of the seven songs off their self-titled debut record, adding one newer untitled song that I hope signals some permanence to the group.

I recorded this set from our usual location in the venue, with a board feed from Union Pool FOH, Leah. As usual for this room, the sound is excellent. Enjoy!

Heron Oblivion is still on tour, and you can view all their dates here.
