Hurray For The Riff Raff is one of those rare bands that seem to be even better every new time you see them. We were amazed at their growth when we saw them twice last summer. Those two shows are on constant play in my listening rotation and I expect to add last Thursday’s show at Knitting Factory to the mix. Fresh off what Alynda Lee called their “magical tour”, which included an appearance at the Newport Folk Festival and a leg of the tour opening for the Alabama Shakes in large venues, the Knit show was a band at its peak having fun and playing a varied setlist. We’ve spoken in previous posts about the brilliant 2012 release Look Out Mama, definitely a sleeper for those disconnected with today’s Americana music but a unanimous best-of for those who were paying attention. Hurray For The Riff are currently working on a new album which is expected in the Fall and the Knit show also saw the performance of what we believe were nine new songs that will eventually see release on that new record. Of those new songs, we’d heard a few at prior shows, including “Small Town Heroes”. But this particular version of Small Town Heroes was so intense and awe inspiring that we have to stream it below.

Hurray For The Riff Raff will perform a free show in Lincoln Center at Hearst Plaza on Saturday August 10 at 1:30 pm. HFTRR will return for a full show in the Fall, venue and date to be announced by the band later today (along with full tour news).

I recorded this set with the Sennheiser cards on a stand at the front corner of the soundboard and mixed with an excellent feed provided by the Knit’s FOH Rob. The sound quality is superb. Enjoy!

Hurray For The Riff Raff: August 26, 2012 Mercury Lounge – Flac/MP3/Streaming

I’m thinking a lot about New Orleans right now. Hurricane Isaac has landed just west of the City on literally the 7th anniversary of Katrina. As New Orleans braces for the worst and all of us hope that the pumps and levees hold in their first major test, its comforting to listen to one of the best young bands the city has to offer. Hurray For The Riff Raff are surging on the momentum of their new album (Look Out Mama), a string of superb shows and some pretty heady media attention. On Sunday, the band returned to Mercury Lounge as the headliner and very impressively packed the joint on a Sunday night late show in late August. While they’ve always impressed us, going all the way back to 2008, its fair to say that HFTRR has never been better. Alynda is singing with strength and confidence and the musicians are incredibly tight. The set was heavy on Mama material but also featured four new songs, a couple of older numbers, and some really neat covers. We are streaming the Jimmie Dale Gilmore (via Flatlanders) classic “Dallas” which not only cemented the band’s alt-country bona fides but also featured vocals with Alynda showing great range and passion. With our thoughts and hopes for the safety of New Orleans on this night, we’re also streaming Hurray For The Riff Raff’s tribute to the city, “St. Roch Blues”. HFTRR will return to do more shows in Europe this Fall before returning to NYC for a special show in mid-October. More details to follow on the NYC date!

I recorded this set with the Sennheiser cards positioned in front of the soundboard and mixed with an excellent board feed. The large crowd on this night was extremely into the band and there’s almost no chatter that isn’t part of the show. We mixed the mics and the board at 50/50 leading to a really nice room feel to an otherwise outstanding recording. Enjoy!

Hurray For The Riff Raff: June 15, 2012 Mercury Lounge – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

Its been a couple of years since we last saw New Orleans’ Hurray For The Riff Raff. While band leader Alynda Lee was born in the raised in the Bronx, over the last three years the band has not come north enough for us to get a chance to see them. In the interim, they released a couple of albums and made an appearance on HBO’s award winning show Tremé. But nearly three years to the day since HFTRR played a show we produced at Monster Island, they triumphantly returned to NYC in support of the band’s brilliant new album Look Out Mama. The show at Mercury Lounge on Friday night was tight, energetic and driven. Hurray For The Riff Raff is a more mature and confident band and the music has evolved — Alynda’s americana’s influences have been fleshed out and we can now hear everything from dixieland to surf rock. At Mercury, the band worked through a setlist that included some of the new album (we’re streaming “What’s Wrong With Me”), but also three new or unreleased songs, and a superb cover of “Time Is On My Side”, that veered more towards the Irma Thomas version and less to the Stones. “Time” also featured Alynda’s vocals chops and the band’s ability to let loose and have some rip roaring fun. Hurray For The Riff Raff have finished their current tour, but will return to the road for a tour of the UK later this Summer.

I recorded this set with the Sennheiser cards mounted on a stand at the front of the soundboard and mixed with a board feed. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!
