Sky Furrows: February 9, 2024 Rubulad

February 20, 2024
By

Sky Furrows is the meeting of Albany’s Burnt Hills and writer-poet Karen Schoemer. They sound something like Sonic Youth, Slint, and Kinski in a blender—psych- and post-rock instrumentals buffeted by Schoemer’s sung-shouted intonations. While Phil Donnelly (drums), Mike Griffin (guitar), and Eric Hardiman (bass) keep a tight rhythm section, Schoemer recites stories, dreams, and observations. From “Shopping Bags,” off of Reflect and Oppose: “A man and a woman in a suit and gown pose for a photographer in front of the river. They look as though they’re dressed for a wedding. People do that, they get dressed days beforehand and pose as if it’s the actual ceremony.” On their own, the music and vocals would be equally of interest, but brought together there’s a tension that makes Sky Furrows so unique and compelling.

Earlier this month, we caught up with Sky Furrows opening for Oneida at Bushwick’s Rubulad. I was immediately enthralled with the band and picked up their most recent record, Reflect and Oppose, a joint release between Feeding Tube and Cardinal Fuzz so you know to expect quality. The record, I have to say, is even better than the show (partly because you get a lyric sheet to follow along) but the live set you’re hopefully about to listen to is a great entry to the band. If you’re in Catskill, NY on March 8th I recommend catching them with Oneida again at the Avalon Lounge. Tickets here. See you there!

SAVAK: December 1, 2023 Tubby’s

February 1, 2024
By

I’m appreciating more and more that the bands I love who I would regularly see in Brooklyn have made Tubby’s a regular spot. It’s like Union Pool north and you just might spot someone you recognize. We saw SAVAK there last year with Chris Brokaw and again in December with New Wet Kojak. This time the band showed up augmented with a second drummer, SAVAK-regular Matt Schulz joined by Jeff Gensterblum set up in the center of the Tubby’s floor. The two pounded away for a really unique set. The more drummers the better I always say!

This set features a few songs I hadn’t heard live from SAVAK, like “Oddsmaker” off their last album Human Error/Human Delight which I was glad to finally hear. No new songs in the set but SAVAK do have a new album out soon: Flavors of Paradise, which can be preordered over at Bandcamp.

If the regular Union Pool is still you’re spot, you have a couple upcoming chances to catch SAVAK. The first is a free show on February 20th with J. Robbins of Jawbox fame. You couldn’t possibly go wrong there. Claim your free ticket here. Next up, on March 7th, SAVAK will play a record release show for Flavors Of Paradise. Grab those tickets here.

I recorded this from our usual spot at Tubby’s. Will provided a perfectly-mixed board feed and Sohrab Habibion sweetened things up with his mastering. The sound is killer. Enjoy!

Primitive Air: December 08, 2023 Tubby’s (Kingston, NY)

December 18, 2023
By

I first became aware of Primitive Air’s Drew Piraino sometime in 2016. He had recently moved to the same weird, obscure, little suburb of Kingston, NY that I had been living in for the past ten or so years. This “town” is so small you cannot get mail delivered to your house. Everything must be picked up from the post office, which is a converted porch attached to someone’s home. Seriously. One day I went to pick up some records I had been waiting for and while the post lady gathered them up, I noticed another stack off to the side. I asked about them and she said, “Yeah, some other guy gets lots of records too.” Inevitably, we became friends.

I remember when the original Primitive Air tape was released on Beyond Beyond is Beyond (RIP). I popped into the bar where he was working to talk about it. I am fairly sure my eloquent assessment was “It sounds like German commune music in a good way.” He hugged me and bought me a round. He was good enough to see through my clumsy review and realize I was holding it to a very grand standard. These songs do not aim for hooks or anything that might be misconstrued as “pop sensibilities.” They exist to get the listener outside of their head or, maybe, much deeper inside their head.

For this performance, Drew (bass and guitar) was joined by Jeff Mercel on drums, Jared Ashdown and Alex Kulick on guitars. The short but very sweet set is comprised of one tune from that 2018 BBiB tape and one new composition. Both tunes were great, but it was a joy to hear “Samadhi” stretched out with some impressive guitar interplay between Jarrod and Alex.

Primitive Air was the first band I ever record at Tubby’s way back in 2019. I’ve seen and recorded a lot of music in that room since so it was a pleasure to close out this year right where I started, in my spot in the back by the soundboard. It was doubly sweet as this was the first show I saw since the building was purchased by the employees. Tubby’s is now truly an independent venue. Enjoying interesting music in a supportive environment is the name of the game, and I hope we all get to keep playing for years to come.

Black Duck: September 9, 2023 Tubby’s (Kingston, NY)

November 10, 2023
By

Since the late 90’s Chicago’s music scene has been a constant source of excitement for me. It seems like every year some new gem comes out of the city’s endless pool of independent, creative, and adventurous musicians and labels. Old favorites like Tortoise, and their label, Thrill Jockey, continue to push boundaries while new favorites like International Anthem and Glyders demand my attention.

Black Duck is a trio of Douglas McCombs, Charles Rumback, and Bill MacKay; all veterans of Chicago’s fertile improv scene. Their self-titled Thrill Jockey debut has its roots in their collective improvisation experience with the bulk of the material being created in the studio. The Tubby’s faithful were lucky enough to be given does of both improv and arranged material.

The set started with one of two fully improvised pieces allowing the band to find their footing before moving into “The Trees Are Dancing” giving us a chance to hear a live treatment of the recorded material. It’s always interesting to see how musicians approach established songs that are rooted in improvisation. In Black Duck’s case, all the album material was stretched out. The evening ended with a nearly ten-minute version “Lemon Treasure” before heading into another impro piece based loosely on the album track “Light’s New Measure”.

I recorded this from my usual spot by the soundboard with the MBHO’s. The low end was a touch boomy early on, but things settled in rather nicely and I’m very happy with the quality. Enjoy!

Tengger: October 1, 2023 Tubby’s Fifth Anniversary

October 31, 2023
By

Today begins our coverage of Tubby’s Fifth Anniversary party with deep Kosmische zones courtesy of Tengger

The Pan-Asian traveling family came to town on day 3 of the event to play at the outdoor stage the Tubby’s team put together by turning Field Court into a block party.  It’s hard to express how emotional this set was to see and hear.  When I first moved to Kingston, nearly 20 years ago, the idea that I would spend a Sunday afternoon in a dead-end street off Broadway doing anything other than being mugged would have been an impossibility. Instead, several hundred people stood still and quiet and let Tengger’s sound fill their hearts and souls. The zones were so deep that at least two people were laid out across the ground; staring into the sky and probably much further while RAAI walked through the crowd chiming bells. It’s this exact spirit of adventurous acceptance that I’ve come to love and expect of Tubby’s crowds.

Tengger’s sonic makeup is an interesting dichotomy.  In constructing their drones and soundscapes they often rely on making the very quiet seem very huge.  This is a complicated issue from a sound and production stance because there is A LOT of gain involved and that often means a lot of feedback. A touch of that is evident during the first track, Water, but Tubby’s super team of Will on house mix and Kyle on monitors tamed the beast quickly.  I recorded this from the Soundboard with my MBHO’s and the FOH team’s superb mix.  The sound is excellent, and I truly hope it was heard throughout the entire town.

Special thanks to friend of the site Mike Newman for facilitating things with the band and getting the ok to post this!

Ned Collette: August 19, 2023 Deep In The Valley

October 25, 2023

The NycTaper coverage of the 2023 Deep In The Valley festival continues!  For today’s installment we have Ned Collette, the Australian born, Berlin based songwriter and producer that came to town to play a beautiful early afternoon set for us all.

The set opened with “The Laughter Across The Street” from 2006’s “Jokes & Trials” immediately finds Ned, with Elisabeth Fuchsia on viola, occupying a space that feels unique in “folk” music. A strange and beautiful and dark space where the songs are a cross between Jim O’Rourke and Judee Sill. Listening to this now, with the leaves falling in the Hudson Valley, feels just right.

I had initially sent my mix of this recording to Ned who asked if he might take a crack at doing a touch more EQ.  Eventually, I ended up sending him my masters which he worked on in his studio and the result is the beautiful sounding mix we have here.  Using my MBHO mics positioned at stage lip for instrument presence and the excellent board feed courtesy of FOH engineer Daniele Stout for vocal clarity Ned gives us a mix far better than what I produced!  Enjoy!

Garcia Peoples: August 19, 2023 Deep In The Valley

September 15, 2023

Our coverage of the 2023 Deep In The Valley festival continues!

Today we have site favorites Garcia Peoples set. Unfortunately, Danny (Guitar, Vocals) and Cesar (Drums) were unable to make it. Thankfully a friend of the band, Ryan Jewell, was on hand to play with Ryley Walker and was able to sit in. With this unique line-up, the band treated us to a single 30+ minute piece of improvisation.

Launching into free improv isn’t something new for Garcia Peoples. In fact, it’s one of my favorite things about them. They are so comfortable with it that I often don’t know if it’s truly improv or a new song they are working on. It’s honestly embarrassing how many times I’ve had to go up to Tom or Andy after a set and ask if something they did was song I don’t know or just jam. Spoiler alert; it’s almost always a jam.

I recorded this with my MBHO cards at stage lip and very nice board feed from FOH engineer Daniel Stout. The quality is excellent!

Glyders: August 19, 2023 Deep In the Valley

September 6, 2023

Our coverage of the 2023 Deep In The Valley festival continues!

Glyders are a Chicago based band that plays Rock and Roll. No adjectives, no modifiers, no bullshit. I was familiar with them from the Raven Sings The Blues review of their recent Drag City release, Maria’s Hunt but never had the chance to catch them live. I’m extremely grateful that they made the trek East for this event because they blew me away and I haven’t stopped listening to them since.

Their record runs seamlessly through a variety of musical styles from country to VU style psych. The live show was different. It was a focused ass kicking. A monstrous sounding power trio with a fire breathing telecaster and a rhythm section that sounds like it just smashed its beer bottle on the bar before a fight. This set, dosed in the early afternoon sunlight, was a serious highlight of an incredible afternoon of music. Readers of this site will be familiar with most of the artists from the festival so I’m truly happy to introduce you to something new.

I recorded this with my MBHO cards at stage lip and very nice board feed from FOH engineer Daniel Stout. Enjoy it LOUD!

Ryley Walker: August 19, 2023 Deep in the Valley

August 24, 2023
By

Welcome to our coverage of Deep in the Valley 2023! The second year of our favorite Hudson Valley fest was again held at beautiful From the Ground Brewery in Red Hook, NY and hosted by our friends at Raven Sings the Blues. Thanks to everyone involved for their hospitality. I can’t wait to see you there next year. In the meantime, relax and enjoy some tunes from the day…

First off here’s the day’s headliner Ryley Walker, playing in duo configuration with Ryan Jewell. While not quite full-band, seeing Ryley and Ryan together is always magical and this performance doesn’t disappoint in the least. Ryley-classics “The Halfwit in Me” and “The Roundabout” take center stage here with the jams and detours we love from these songs. I’m a massive fan of Course in Fable and consider it Ryley’s finest, so I was glad to hear “Rang Dizzy” from that one. The last song is an instrumental which I’m sure has a title that is escaping me. Listening back I almost feel like I’m in a field in Red Hook, New York with some apple trees off to the side. This one’s the highlight of a nearly perfect day.

I recorded this with the MBHO omnis at the stage lip, combined with a board feed courtesy of engineer Daniel Stout. The sound quality is outstanding. Enjoy!

Rose City Band: July 23, 2023 Tubby’s (Kingston, NY)

July 27, 2023
By

I’ve been waiting for years to see a Rose City Band show. For 18 of those months, we were all waiting to see anything but even once shows started happening the band didn’t come East. When they finally had East Coast dates booked the tour was, sadly, cancelled due to covid. This past Sunday it finally happened. Rose City Band played their first show EVER in NY at Tubby’s and we have the recording.

Rose City Band is Ripley Johnson’s (Wooden Shjips, Moon Duo) outlet for fusing the musical loves of his youth; Neil Young, Grateful Dead and Van Morrison are noticeable touch points, with the classic country sounds of Merle Haggard, Buck Owens and the like. During interviews Ripley has often referred to this as summertime music and that’s always the association I’ve had with it. I have vivid memories of sitting on my deck in late spring and early summer of 2020 with nothing to do but enjoy the sunshiny reverb and pedal steel from the first two Rose City Band albums. Nowhere to go, no one to see. Nothing to do but enjoy the turn of the season and the tunes. That experience hasn’t changed much. It’s always as the sun starts coming out in the Hudson Valley that I turn to these albums.

During the recording process Ripley has historically handled the heavy lifting alone but live he is supported by an excellent band of Portland heavy hitters. They opened the show with a breezy take on “Empty Bottles” from 2020’s Summerlong eventually making their way to a fantastic medley of Mariposa> Me and Willie > Reno Shuffle that truly embraced the choogle-charged, sun baked flow of Cosmic Americana. The sold-out crowd was loud and appreciative all night. New Yorkers aren’t well known for their friendliness but hopefully the band felt the love we gave them for their first trip to the state.

Rose City Band has two more shows left on this leg of the tour before a short break. They will be back at it in early September for another run of East Coast shows with support from Rosali. These will be must see shows if you are in the area; Rosali with the David Nance band backing her was the best set of music I saw all last year. Rose City Band then swings back west in October before heading to Europe in November. Plenty of chances to get out and see them!

I recorded this from my usual spot in the back of the room by the soundboard with my MBHO’s. Tubby’s FOH engineer Kyle provided the excellent mix and board feed. Enjoy!
