Tribes: December 8, 2011 Mercury Lounge – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

Tribes have hit it big in their native England less than a year since their debut. Its easy to see why. The two EPs the band has released in 2011 are both packed with irresistible power pop, which borrows from Big Star at its most inspired and Cheap Trick at its most polished — and adds a Brit flavor. Tribes arrived on the US shores just a few days ago, and played their first-ever NYC show last night at Mercury Lounge. Apparently, the brit-buzz has followed them as the venue was packed. As the band will release their debut full-length in January (Baby on Island Records UK), the forty-minute set consisted of only four previously released tracks from the EPs and five new ones. We are streaming “Corner of an English Field”, a mid-tempo rocker with hooks aplenty and a driving beat. Its not hard to foresee that Tribes will soon be playing much larger venues than Mercury, especially given the can’t-miss quality of the songs that will hit in January. Tribes plays at Glasslands tonight, before returning to England after a few more US dates.

I recorded this set with the Neumanns positioned at the soundboard booth and mixed with a soundboard feed. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

My favorite moment of this moe. concert sort of encapsulates the dedication of this long-running prog-jam band and the allure that they offer dedicated followers. In a well-planned act of tribute to their friend, at the very moment when “Rebubula” returns from near silence to a resounding jam, two of taper T.J.’s buddies shouted for all of the microphones to capture “TJ Samulis 100th show!”. For those who think tapers are humorous killjoys, I thought this was not only hilarious but also a great little “watermark” on the recording. Its that kind of personal touch that comes directly from the band — guitarist Al Schnier reads fan-created “announcements” before the encore segment of every show, and the band themselves have always mingled among the fans when possible. Indeed for the last twelve years, moe. has hosted their own Labor Day festival, moe.down, which has also expanded to include a winter “snoe.down”. On this particular night, the second in a two-show Terminal 5 Thanksgiving weekend run, the band brought out all the stops. There were classics, some serious jam vehicles, some rare songs, and a full two and half hours of music. We are streaming “Brent Black”, which is pretty much a microcosm of the show itself. The song is a moe. classic and this version spans twenty-three minutes, contains a dual drum segment, and a bass solo. Pretty good for a 100th show.

I recorded this set from the front of the soundboard booth, which was caged at the rear of the floor. I raised the pole up to about 12 feet, and ran both the Neumanns and the DPAs, but also included the Apogee “Mini-me” A/D unit in front of the Neumanns to enrich the hypercardioid sound. Other than a consistent din of audience chatter, the sound quality is quite excellent. Enjoy!

Purling Hiss: November 18, 2011 Cameo Gallery – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

There is something completely natural and unassuming about Mike Polizze’s approach to music. He’s recorded under the name Purling Hiss for the last several years, but recently recruited a band to perform live. Purling Hiss is all about no-nonsense guitar-centered hard rock. Polizze is from the Philadelphia school of long-haired guitar, which includes Kurt Vile and Adam Granduciel of The War On Drugs. The common characteristic (besides the hair) is that each of these artists is a fairly mellow and unassuming person off-stage who immediately crank the volume and the energy when the amps are turned on. Last week at Cameo Gallery, we saw Purling Hiss for the first time since they opened for Vile at Bowery last June. This time, the band headlined and performed an outstanding forty-five minute set that never let up. Polizze’s guitar was front and center from the outset and each song provided an opportunity to stretch out and flex the axe. We’re streaming “Passenger Queen”, which switched to overdrive about halfway through the six minute song and provided one of the many Polizze peaks.

I recorded this set with the Neumann’s raised on a pole eight feet high directly in front of the soundboard and mixed with a soundboard feed. The sound quality is superb. Enjoy!

Deer Tick: November 20, 2011 Webster Hall – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

It was undoubtedly one of the most memorable concert experiences of my life — The Replacements at The Ritz in the Summer of 1986. The band was apparently riding high, touring on one of the greatest albums of the era Tim. The album was released in the Fall of 1985, and by the Summer of ’86 it established The Replacements as the foremost alternative band of the time. The motley crew of Midwest punks had matured into a powerful unit led by the increasingly confident Paul Westerberg and the rambunctious lead guitar of Bob Stinson. That night on East 11th Street, I entered the venue as the concert began with “Bastards of Young”, the lead track of side two of Tim. As inebriated as the band were the massive throngs of fans, one of whom leapt from the balcony into the slam-dancing front of the crowd. They weren’t called “mosh pits” yet. The concert is also legendary because Westerberg himself jumped into the crowd and broke his wrist, resulting in the cancellation of the balance of the tour and sending the band into a few month of hiatus. By the time the Replacements returned Bob Stinson had left the band, and things were never the same. But for that single manic and magic alcohol-fueled night in the Summer of 1986, The Replacements were the best band on the planet.

Twenty-five years later in the exact same venue (now called Webster Hall), I was fortunate to experience another magical night courtesy of one of today’s foremost heirs to the legacy of The Replacements — Deer Tick. The sold-out crowd was similarly exuberant, the alcohol flowed freely (and covered the stage by show’s end), and most special of all, Deer Tick played a picture perfect cover of “Bastards of Young” (streaming below). Fortunately, no limbs were broken in the process, although several guitars, keyboards and amps were smashed in the anarchy of the show and tour finale. We’ve seen Deer Tick cover Tim material before — their performance this Summer of “Waitress in the Sky” appeared on nyctaper in August [here]. But this time it was special, not only because of the incredible coincidence of location, but because Deer Tick has seemingly fully realized and embraced their position as the contemporary carriers of the torch for a particular musical approach and attitude. Just as the Replacements had little regard for the pretense and affectation of the bastions of “serious” rock music, Deer Tick’s approach has evolved into a group intent on making music that’s all about being young, living on the edge, drinking too much, and having a ball, all the while maintaining enough of a creative edge to guarantee that the music has staying power. John McCauley is equally comfortable performing a solo version of the bitter poignancy of John Prine’s “Unwed Fathers”, or Deer Tick’s mournful “Houston TX”, as much as he is smashing his guitar during “Let’s All Go To The Bar.” Similarly, while the Replacements cover is the take-away from this show, the encore set began with John Lennon’s tragic and painful “Mother” (also streaming below).

Of course, there is a cost to this approach. As the Replacements burned out far too soon, and suffered the wrath of their contemporary critics, one fears that Deer Tick may not be capable of continuing this peak level of performance. Already, the dinosaurs of indie criticism have unleashed the backlash. A creative writing school dropout named Ian Cohen published a hatchet job on the new Deer Tick album Divine Providence on Pitchfork, which was so utterly devoid of any honest understanding of the music (or music in general) and reeked of an agenda, that its hard to take the review seriously. Deer Tick doesn’t seem to have. And although Pitchfork hasn’t been a serious tastemaker to non-casual music fans in nearly a decade, there’s probably a lesson in there. Don’t let the magic get away so soon. Just as that 1986 night at The Ritz was the Waterloo for the best era of The Replacements, it all can end with a simple stage dive or taking your critics too seriously. By the end of ’86, Westerberg had fired Bob and sacrificed his creative edge for a big record deal. One can only hope that Deer Tick will stay with the excellent Partisan Records, and keep their energy, confidence and perspective. I suspect that if Ian Cohen was stroking his thesaurus in 1986, he would have panned Tim. I also suspect that John McCauley already understands all of this. At least I hope he does.

I recorded this set with the Neumann microphones mounted in the center of the soundboard booth at the balcony rail, and mixed with an excellent soundboard feed. Deer Tick’s front of house sound engineer for this tour was the excellent Melanie, who has also mixed in several local venues. Her mix on this night was simply superb and we’re extremely please with the quality of this recording. Enjoy!

Last week in the underground Pink Floyd live music collector community, a recording surfaced for the first time in over 40 years. A 1967 performance of the original band with Syd Barrett in Stockholm was recorded by a local archivist and at long last reached collectors around the world. The proto-psychedelic music was groundbreaking in the mid-60s, but across four decades even this technologically-challenged recording is still fresh and exciting. The palpable energy of the songs and the ferocious nature of the improvisation is breathtaking. Its no wonder that generations removed the original brand of psychedelic rock, there are still any number of excellent purveyors of the craft today. On Thursday night at Music Hall of Williamsburg, we witnessed a performance of perhaps the most pure neo-psych band around, San Francisco’s Wooden Shjips. On tour to support their latest album West — the band’s first release on the excellent label Thrill Jockey Records — Wooden Shjips made one of their infrequent visits to NYC. We have been fortunate to have captured the previous two, 2009 at 171 Lombardy and 2010 at Music Hall. The set on Thursday continued on the same vein as the previous shows, with the band visiting much of their full catalog and stretching the numbers out with rich improvisation. While Ripley Johnson’s crunchy guitar is forefront of the mix, each member of the quartet shined on this particular evening. As an example, we’re streaming “Fallin'” below , which features the swirling psych organ of Nash Whalen for most of the song structure before Johnson shreds the last four minutes. The show concluded with a number from the band’s 2007 self-titled debut, “We Ask You To Ride” which was so loud that I could literally feel my knees vibrate when each bass note was stuck. I closed my eyes and for a second imagined that the 1967 Swedish crowd probably felt a similar physical rush from The Pink Floyd.

I recorded this set with the four microphone rig from the front center of the balcony. We’re still struggling to find the proper recording technique for this particular venue, but after some post-production and tasteful EQ, I feel that this recording can now be classified as an excellent listen. North Highlands: October 22, 2011 Cameo Gallery (CMJ) – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

North Highlands are one of Brooklyn’s most promising new indie-folk bands. Their 2010 Sugar Lips EP gave us a taste of their talent, as Brenda Malvini’s sweet vocals and keys are accompanied by a full band of accomplished musicians. In October, the band released their first full length album. Wild One is the full realization of those talents, as eleven-song album features infectious and expertly crafted melodies. At the Cameo Gallery on Saturday of CMJ week, North Highlands played in the middle of the bill but brought out a fine crowd for their 4 pm set time. The band’s short set featured five Wild One songs, and one apparent new song. We are streaming “Bruce” which features an irresistible hook that is spiced up with a nod to Springsteen’s “Dancing In The Dark”. North Highlands have two upcoming gigs, on November 17 at Shea Stadium and December 15 at Glasslands (PopGun Presents Holiday Party!).

I recorded this set in the same manner as the previous posts from this show. The vocal microphone was problematic for the first two songs so that the lead vocal levels are low, but ultimately reach the appropriate volume. With that caveat, enjoy!

Condo Fucks: November 4, 2011 Mercury Lounge – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

Condo Fucks exist as an alternative reality where Ira Kaplan, Georgia Hubley and James McNew can perform as an authentic 60’s garage band playing a selection of eclectic covers without the need to actually be Yo La Tengo at any point during the evening. On Friday night at Mercury Lounge, the alter-ego of one of the favorite bands of this site delivered a blistering thirty-five minute set that left the packed crowd shaking their heads in awe. As we have witnessed so many times at Yo La Tengo shows, the band is comprised of three of the most knowledgeable music fans around — they are literally encyclopedias of 20th Century popular music. So it was no surprise that the Mercury setlist contained only two songs from the sole Condo Fucks release, 2009’s Fuckbook. Instead, the band played eleven other covers, ranging from 50’s R&B, to 60’s iconoclasts The Fugs, to obscure early 70’s proto-punk (electric eels, Richard Hell), to 80’s alternative (Television Personalities), all performed in a high-speed, feedback-drenched, vocally-distorted garage sound. When the set ended far too soon with the Flamin’ Groovies “Dog Meat” (streaming below), a song originally actually recorded on a two-track cassette deck in an actual garage, we took solace in the fact that for their Hanukkah shows in a few weeks, Yo La Tengo will undoubtedly dig out some of these songs to spice up the eight shows’ setlists. I recorded this set with the Neumann microphones mounted at the soundboard booth and combined with a perfectly mixed board feed. Per the band’s instructions, the vocals were mixed at maximum levels to capture that authentic overdriven 60’s garage sound, and the venue’s team captured that sound perfectly. Enjoy!

Born Gold: October 22, 2011 Cameo Gallery CMJ Show – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

If the photo posted above makes no sense, then you have not seen Born Gold live. The performer formerly known as “Gobble Gobble” has a new album out called Bodysongs, and he played a series of CMJ shows last week to support it, including the Saturday day show at Cameo Gallery. However, the live Born Gold experience can not be anticipated by just listening to the new album — its an experience that must be seen to be believed. The band is the recording project of Canadian Cecil Frena, who occupied the front center of the stage at a ten-foot table layered with a series of digital effects, mixers, laptops, pedals and assorted gadgets. On the floor in front of the stage were the other two members of the band who provided not only percussion, but also contributed to the electronic gadgetry and the overall histrionics. The entire show was lit by two green-tinted stage lights and a liberal use of a fog machine. Oh, and the music. Frena is a wizard with his gadgets, as he produced an aggressive throbbing beat layered with hypnotic melodies and effects-laden vocals. Each song ignited the crowd into a frenzy — at six o’clock in the afternoon. Its hard to imagine the level of crowd participation at a wild 3am club scene. Born Gold seems made for that setting.

We recorded this set in the same manner as the Prussia set posted yesterday. However, Born Gold provided a full mix of their sound to the board, and that mix was meticulously balanced. We stressed the room mics in our mixdown to accentuate the atmosphere and the result is an excellent recording with plenty of room feel. Enjoy!

Prussia: October 20, 2011 Cake Shop + October 22, 2011 Cameo Gallery (CMJ Shows) – Flac and MP3 Downloads and Streaming Songs

Prussia is a self-described “experimental pop” band from Detroit. With two keyboards, often three guitars, and a range of sound effects to supplement the unique vocals of singer Ryan Spencer, Prussia is at the forefront of the burgeoning Michigan underground music scene. Last week, the band traveled to NYC for CMJ and performed seven times. We were fortunate to have them play at both shows we hosted this year — the NYCTaper CMJ show at Cake Shop on Thursday and the Golden Ratio / BirdDog Promo / NYCTaper show at Cameo Gallery on Saturday. Prussia played in the second slot for both shows, but the early afternoon set time did not detract from their energy or musical prowess. Behind all of the inventive experimental indie is simply five outstanding musicians. Prussia’s third release is their new album Poor English, which is available in a “name your price” format on Bandcamp. Their set included four of the new songs, two of which are streaming below.

I recorded the Cake Shop set in the same manner as all the of the recordings already posted from that day and the sound quality is superb. The Cameo Gallery recording is a mix of the Neumann microphones on a stand in front of the soundboard booth and mixed with a soundboard feed. The room is a boomier than Cake Shop, so that while the sound is quite excellent, its a very different recording from the Cake Shop one. Enjoy both!

Oberhofer: October 1, 2011 Monster Island Farewell BBQ – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

On a rainy and dreary October day, with Monster Island padlocked behind it, River Avenue became the makeshift concert spot for a bittersweet celebration of seven years of perhaps the best DIY shows that Brooklyn has ever seen. Monster Island Basement was a venue that we visited often, and recorded everything we saw there. The excellent performances we experienced litter this site. We also presented a show there in the Spring of 2009. As he has for its entire seven year existence, the ubiquitous presence of ToddP was the first person we saw when we turned onto River Avenue that morning to record the entire event. Per his tradition, the ToddP Acoustic BBQ is a neverending parade of local DIY talent who perform brief ten minute sets. On this day, it was 36 bands, with everyone from the electronic noise of openers White Sun, to the slide-blues of Ezekial Healy, the poetry of Eliza and Parry, the folk of Katie Eastburn, the spoken word performance by DJ Dog Dick, and a million other genres. We recorded 29 acts, as the persistent rains brought the action inside for periods of time. Of those acts, perhaps the most impressive was the kinetic energy of Oberhofer, whose 3-song set was both entertaining and engaging for the obvious talent that Brad Oberhofer projects. In a raw acoustic setting without the benefit of the bells and whistles of sound effects, the artist and their talent stand naked. In that setting Oberhofer shined performing three songs — including two of his own compositions and a tongue in cheek cover of Kanye West.

This show was the most difficult circumstances under which I’ve ever recorded. The weather was an issue all day, and the “stage” was continually shifted, so that we were left with having the pick up the microphone stand and move it often. For this particular set, the artist remained in one location (you can see our microphones in the photo) and played at a decent acoustic volume. As a result, although you can hear some wind noise, the overall sound quality is quite excellent. Enjoy!
