I suppose one could fairly accuse this site of not featuring enough heavy music.  There are several reasons for that, not least being that a lot of “metal” bands aren’t into being recorded.  But here’s to hoping that changes, especially since Brooklyn has had a vibrant metal scene going for quite awhile now, as chronicled by BrooklynVegan among few “indie” sites that acknowledge metal even exists.  Naam are one of the first bands that made me realize such a gap existed in our coverage, when I saw them open for Om a few years ago.  Naam absolutely slayed then, and they have only gotten better since, combining bad-ass guitar chops with a psychedelic sensibility that makes them a crossover beyond only dedicated headbangers.  This show at Music Hall of Williamsburg found the band opening again, this time for stoner metal mavens Monster Magnet.  The amps and stacks were cranked this evening, and Naam made the most of them over a series of four blistering tracks, including two from their eponymous debut on TeePee Records.  I admit, I was also hoping to hear “Drain You” or “Pennyroyal Tea”, both of which appear on their Nirvana Covers 7″ – but maybe next time.  I hope this is but one of many heav(ier) shows I cover in the fine year of 2012!

JFCB and I recorded this set with tiny DPA 4061 microphones that captured the full range of the band’s sonic assault.  The recording is dense, upfront and excellent. Enjoy!  Note: any setlist help would be appreciated!

Akron/Family: January 21, 2012 285 Kent – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

Its hard to fully describe the complete manic communal energy at Saturday night’s Akron/Family show at 285 Kent. On the night after the band received the great gift of being able to perform with the Sun Ra Arkestra (in Philly), it seemed as if A/F wanted to reach that kind of high on their own — and to a great extent, they succeeded. The crowd was quite animated from the very outset of the show, a superb opening set from Bad Weather California. By the time Akron/Family took the stage, the venue was packed to the gills and buzzing in anticipation. The set began with a cacophonic jam that led into the quiet “Gravely Mountains of the Moon”. The show wouldn’t be quiet very long, as a great segue of lengthy songs mixed with incendiary jams were all mixed in with periods of direct crowd participation. By the time the band reached the main set closing “Silly Bears”, the set was approaching ninety minutes of mania. The encore intermission wasn’t a break as much as a chance for the crowd to take over, chanting and playing the band’s shared percussion instruments until Akron/Family returned. We are streaming below the show’s finale, an absolutely brilliant take on “Light Emerges” that brought the festivities to appropriate close. Although its quite early in 2012, its obvious that this amazing show will be one of the highlights of the year.

I recorded this set with the DPA Cardioid microphones mounted to a pole ten feet from the stage and mixed the upfront mics with a soundboard feed. The recording is mixed with a larger amount of the audience feed in order to fully capture the concert experience. Enjoy!

The Phantom Family Halo: January 16, 2012 Glasslands – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

The Phantom Family Halo deserve your attention – and they’ve already gotten their fair share.  Last year’s The Mindeater EP with Bonnie “Prince” Billy, another artist with some Louisville roots, earned them mention in the New York Times and beyond.  Bandmember Dom Cipolla also participated in another high-profile collaborative affair recently when he contributed to a live session at Joe’s Pub that covered Brian Eno’s Here Come the Warm Jets.  This Monday night show at Glasslands, however, was dedicated to the band’s own material, in particular their forthcoming release When I Fall Out, due out on Knitting Factory Records on Valentine’s Day.  You can stream the studio version of one of the album tracks, “White Hot Gun”, here, and the live version from this show below.

This show found the band tearing through what should be a large portion of the new record, and in fine form while doing it.  With a sound that straddles the divide between psych rock and British metal, Phantom Family Halo put on a sonic assault of a rock show that isn’t just a display of the power of their effects pedals or ability to noodle on their instruments.  Rather, their songs are often tightly wound and forcefully delivered.  With members of Sapat and The For Carnation among the players, it’s as if Phantom Family Halo takes some cues from those acts, but with the energy turned to eleven.  This fairly short set felt a bit like a preview of what to expect when the record drops – so lucky for you, they have a record release show set for February 11 at the up-and-coming Greenpoint venue Saint Vitus, where they will be joined by our good friends The Loom.

I recorded this set with DPA microphones from our usual spot in the venue, plus a soundboard feed from the Glasslands FOH team.  The results are excellent. Enjoy!

Cracker: January 14, 2012 Highline Ballroom – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

As we noted in the Camper Van Beethoven post, there will be another East coast “Camp Out” this year. The main event for the multi-day show at the 40 Watt Club in Athens Georgia (March 1 to March 3) is the celebration of the twentieth anniversary of Cracker’s debut album. On Saturday night at Highline Ballroom, Cracker headlined the show and played an energetic 75 minute set. Although this show was not exactly a preview of the Camp Out celebration, five songs from Cracker were performed, including the album’s opening track “Teen Angst” in the encore slot, which we’re also streaming below.

I recorded this set in the same manner at the Camper set and the sound quality is superb. Enjoy!

The Lemonheads: January 11, 2012 Knitting Factory – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

As acts from the early 90s have continued to take victory laps over the past few years, I have had a chance to reflect on how different the personalities were that dominated the music scene then than those from today’s self-affirming generation making vital new music today.  In an era principally concerned with authenticity, its troubadours were often people who lived hard and felt deeply – addicts, romantics, and the generally self-destructive.  And if you wanted a picture of the archetypal musician of the era, you might consider Evan Dando of The Lemonheads (which he actually formed in ’86, but rose to stardom in the early 90s).  A soft-spoken singer whose lyrics tell tales of broken romance, addiction, and self-doubt, Dando has had his ups and downs professionally.  I last saw the band headline the 9:30 Club in Washington, DC in 1997 – the last year the band was together before going on hiatus – and they packed the place.  In fact, a little known Orlando, FL band called Matchbox 20 opened.  The next time I encountered the band, Dando was playing a show in an out of the way honky tonk near a Vermont ski resort.

Dando brought the band back in 2005 and has put out two new records, The Lemonheads and the covers album Varshons, as well as a greatest-hits collection in the UK, Laughing All the Way to the Cleaners: The Best Of.  While Dando has struggled at times on this current tour – I heard reports from other cities of shows completely falling apart due to him being too impaired to play – the quality of his music and his songwriting hasn’t wavered.  To see a Lemonheads show is to see song after song that you know, each as good as the last, each intensely, searingly personal.  Listen to “All My Life”, streaming below, and see if it hits close to home.

At this show at the Knitting Factory in Brooklyn, Dando was every bit the musician I had seen nearly 15 years ago, playing an epic show that consisted of multiple solo sets, a full run-through of The Lemonheads’ breakout album, It’s A Shame About Ray, and a second full-band set.  The show ran for an epic 105 minutes – even more impressive considering the average song length of about three minutes.  Dando delved into some of the covers from Varshons, as well as some of his other concert favorites.  Some of these covers could have been written especially for Dando; he chooses covers that tell his story as much as the orignal authors’.  As Dando continued to play a string of classics, it was hard not to yearn for the era that spawned them, when cred and emotions were a band’s currency, and musicians didn’t need car commercials to earn enough money for the booze and drugs that fueled their damaged art.

Wrapping up a set that never faltered, Dando closed with the twofer of “Rick James Style” – whose refrain “don’t wanna get high / but I don’t wanna not get high” is lent added menace by James’ eventual end – and the Angry Samoans’ “You Stupid Jerk,” a short, chaotic burst of silliness that ended this show on a happy note.  The band continues their U.S. tour westward today, and I hope fans in the Midwest don’t miss a chance to see Evan Dando back at the top of his game.

I recorded this set with Schoeps “open cardiod” microphones and an excellent soundboard feed by the Knitting Factory team.  The recording is an outstanding capture of the night.  Enjoy!

Wires Under Tension: December 17, 2011 285 Kent – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

Wires Under Tension is one of those bands formed out of a happy accident. After he left his condemned Brooklyn practice space for a building in the Bronx, Christopher Tignor met and teamed with drummer Theo Metz to form the band. The 2011 release of Light Science (Western Vinyl) was one of those “out of nowhere” albums that took many critics by surprise. But really, WUT is a duo of incredibly talented individuals who produce compelling instrumental post-rock music, and its no surprise that they’re quite good — Tignor is a classically trained violist after all. Last month at 285 Kent, Wires Under Tension played the Printed Matter Benefit gig, and worked through the entire album in re-ordered fashion. The songs are performed live with violin and guitar, but with both players manipulating electronics to complete the full band sound. We are streaming the show’s finale “Position And Hold”, which provided a powerful finish to the excellent set.

I recorded this set with the DPA Cardioid microphones mounted on a pole 15 feet from the stage and mixed with a soundboard feed. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Suuns: December 10, 2011 Webster Hall – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

When acidjack recorded Suuns in January at Rock Shop, he noted the versatility of the band and the “controlled intensity” that the band brings to each song. By December, when I recorded their show at Webster Hall opening for The Antlers, Sunns seem to have perfected that approach. In one of the best-received opening sets we’ve seen in quite some time, Suuns began with the new 12″ b-side “Red Song” (streaming below), which presaged the compelling tension and release of the post-rock they delivered in spades. The balance of the setlist included much of their excellent 2010 release Zeroes QC (Secretly Canadian Records) and one new song. We expect that the continued development of this talented and imaginative quartet will bring to them to larger stages and audiences — it won’t be long before they’ll play Webster again as the headliner.

I recorded this set in the same manner as the Antlers set from the same show, and the sound quality is superb.

It almost unfathomable, considering the many many shows we’ve attended over the last decade, that we had not previously crossed paths with Kevin Devine. His abundant vocal and songwriting talents, and the picture perfect nature of his intelligent indie-pop records are exactly what we look for in a performer. So when we finally got the chance to catch Kevin at Maxwell’s on Saturday, the entire show felt completely natural. And when we met and chatted with Kevin after the show, he seemed like a kindred spirit. The songs themselves make it obvious that we are listening to a writer with vision, emotion and fortitude — dealing with life’s difficulties while persistently finding the beauty in it all. On Saturday, Kevin performed solo acoustic and while surrounded by diehard fans in an intimate venue, and delivered a powerful set that included much of his new album Between the Concrete & Clouds (Razor & Tie), but also dug deep into his catalog including classics “Cotton Crush”, “Tap Dance” and “Ballgame” (streaming below). Kevin even included a song from his old band Miracle of ’86 (“Knife”), and two new songs. Kevin Devine will be touring Europe in February, and will be back in the US for some Midwest dates in March, but promised some East coast dates in the Spring.

We are fortunate the longtime friend of the site and part-time contributor neild was able to capture the Yo La Tengo Hanukkah Night 5 / Christmas Eve show this year.

As soon as I spotted Tara Key limbering up her guitar on Saturday, I had a good feeling about Night 5 of this year’s Yo La Tengo Hanukkah run. Having seen Tara many times with her excellent band Antietam, as well as sitting in with YLT this spring at the Bell House, I couldn’t have been more thrilled to see her introduced as the night’s guest guitarist while Ira Kaplan makes his deliberate return from the disabled list. The band started slow, literally, with their quiet version of “Big Day Coming,” the beautiful “Crying of Lot G” (one of the best in YLT’s mini-genre of domestic-argument songs), and a weird, droney, slowed-down version of “Upside Down” from 1991’s May I Sing With Me. It was all lovely and enjoyable … and then the band kicked it into another gear, starting with the three-guitar version of “Double Dare” (James McNew switching from bass to acoustic guitar), which was only one of the best versions of that song I’ve yet heard live. Things only got better from there: Georgia was absolutely on fire behind the drums (when Hubley’s on fire, no one can touch her!), and Ira and Tara’s guitars intertwined magically on the rocked-out songs that followed, especially a brilliant “Decora” (cf. “Double Dare” re: “best versions ever”). The main set culminated in *another* version of “Big Day Coming,” followed by YLT’s cover of “Little Honda,” (streaming below) which devolved into a noise jam to end all noise jams that has my ears still ringing 24 hours later. Add in an encore that featured comedian Jon Glaser performing Bob Seger’s “Night Moves” as his character from “Delocated” – it turns out that this is a song that’s always cried out to be sung through a voice modulator – and it was an epic, epic night, even by Maxwell’s Hanukkah standards.

The show was recorded with Core Sound binaural mics, mounted on a stand at the corner of the Maxwell’s sound booth, fed into a Microphone Madness battery box (with moderate bass rolloff) and then to an iRiver 320 running Rockbox. Big thanks to Carson for all his help, and both Carson and Mark for creating a great mix that brought out the nuances of the quiet material while keeping the high-decibel songs from being reduced to white noise. (“Little Honda” excepted, and that was intentional.) I’m going to stop gushing now, and go listen to this show again. You should do the same, if you know what’s good for you.

Yo La Tengo: December 27, 2011 Maxwell’s – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

That life is short is one of those well-worn cliches.  It’s also true.  Knowing that this would be the only Yo La Tengo Hanukkah show I would see this year – and knowing that YLT frontman Ira Kaplan might not have been able to make it at all – that old cliche came to mind in full force.  This is a band that consistently holds nothing back – a band that, whenever its career is over, will wind up its run with no regrets.  The same can be said of this Hanukkah run at Maxwell’s, which found classic acts like Pussy Galore and The Trypes reunited, showed off Lee Ranaldo’s post-Sonic Youth project, and found critical darlings like the Sea and Cake and Kurt Vile opening.

The openers are always a big part of the story with these shows, but Yo La Tengo rightfully remains the focus.  Once again, they delivered a set that was by turns fiercely jammy and rocking, quiet and pensive, and funny.  And as with virtually every Hanukkah set they play, it was full of surprises and special guests.  Continuing the tradition of covering Jewish musicians, after a solemn opener of “As the Hour Grows Late,” the band moved on to Bob Dylan’s “I Threw It All Away”, followed by a nearly ten-minute guitar-freakout version of Velvet Underground’s “Heroin,” that featured Eleventh Dream Day’s Rick Rizzo ripping it up on guitar.  Though still early in the night, that could easily be my top highlight.  On the other hand, it’s hard to argue with the sprawling sequence of “From A Motel 6” into two Beatles numbers “Flying” and “It’s All Too Much” each featuring The Trypes.  But then, if you were Ira, you’d probably pick the song that closed out the eight-night session – his mother, Marilyn, performing Bob Hilliard and Lee Pockriss’ “My Little Corner of the World”.  Ms. Kaplan and her son can now check another item off of their bucket list.  And so do we.

nyctaper and I recorded this set with four microphones and soundboard feed running into two clock-synced decks, providing rich, fantastic sound.  Enjoy!
