Correspondent Rich Cuiffo writes: “Nocona is about energy, a rock band with history. They draw their roots in country, folk, punk, and rock. They take the psychedelia of the 13th Floor Elevators and mash it up with the Bakersfield sound – Roky and Buck; Love and the Burrito Brothers. The mix of all these eclectic tastes – art and twang and punk and family – comes together to bring a distinct style that takes risks and delivers a sound unlike any other artist today. Their free spirit is evident in up-tempo tunes and infectious hooks with honesty, written by lead vocalist and guitarist Chris Isom.

While several band members have lived and gigged in NYC over the years, Venice, California is where they currently hang their hats.  I’ve been fortunate to spend the last couple of years with them at SXSW in Austin the always dig hearing them live. This was their debut NYC performance with an awesome show of support from friends both old and new.  In typical family style, this gig was a Kickstarter kickoff for old friend and local luthier, Jay Braun, whose Brooklyn Instruments is moving into full production of smart, affordable instruments in a small, local shop using renewable, salvaged and repurposed materials. To learn more about this great cause please visit this site.

Clocking in at around and hour, this set delivered a mix of old and new songs featuring most of their new album Long Gone Song.  Hope you all enjoy this band as much as me and will come out to see them next time they come through.”

King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard: October 13 and 26, 2014 Baby’s All Right – Flac/MP3/Streaming

Australia’s neo-psych phenoms King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard were here in New York during the Summer and made a bit of a splash. We saw them open for Thee Oh Sees at McCarren Park and could definitely see their talents, but conditions (crazy wind, early set time) didn’t allow us to see the band’s full potential. Baby’s All Right gave King Gizzard a multi-show residency back in June, so when the band returned to NYC for much of October it was perhaps fitting that we should capture them at their homebase away from home. Baby’s offers Gizz what they need to thrive — the right sized room, an adoring audience and a welcoming vibe. And thrive they did. The band played multiple shows at Baby’s including several CMJ shows. We were fortunate to capture the first of those October shows, and the last. On October 13, The King Gizzard set was truly what I had hoped to see when I saw the band’s potential back in June. This was a full-on psych-rock assault with dual-lead guitars, dual-drummers and all manner of non-traditional instruments (flute!). The new King Gizzard album I’m In Your Mind Fuzz came out at the end of the month, but two weeks early we got nearly the whole thing, beginning with the tremendous five-song segue that opens the album to also start the show. That mini-set literally never let up in its astounding energy. When the band finally came up for air a good twenty minutes into the set, you could almost hear an exhale from the crowd and feel a collective realization that this band had truly arrived — lots of mouthed wows and head shakes. Gizz was on and the room was electric. The remainder of the set was equally outstanding, including the end of the show which featured two extended jam sessions and finished with the band’s epic “Head On/Pill”.

At the end of the CMJ week, the appropriately named annual “CMJ Hangover Brunch” hosted by Panache Booking featured a completely different King Gizzard set from earlier in the month. This event was conceived as a quieter, more mellow experience and the Gizz played off that idea. The pared down version of the band displayed their talents at singing/songwriting and it was no less compelling than the psych-out aspect of the band. The October 26 set featured only two songs from the new album, the aptly named “Slow Jam” songs. After the set we had a nice chat with band leader Stu MacKenzie, an intelligent and thoughtful guy whose personality is well captured in this excellent piece in Interview Magazine.

King Gizzard is back in Australia and not likely to tour the US again until the Summer of 2015, but those shows will be events not to miss.

I also recorded the crazy Halloween show and that will be on the site within the next few weeks.

Both of these shows were recorded and mixed in the exact same manner by Baby’s FOH Devin. We blended the room mics with his excellent multitrack mix and the sound quality of each is superb, truly capturing the completely different feel of each of the sets. Enjoy!

Prince Rupert’s Drops: May 12, 2012 NYCTaper 5th Anniversary Show at 285 Kent – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

[Photos by Jill at For the Love of Brooklyn]

We had the privilege this month of celebrating this site’s fifth anniversary with a show at 285 Kent headlined and curated by Oneida, a band we have long admired and been honored to feature on this site many times. Their first choice of act for this bill was the enigmatic Prince Rupert’s Drops, a band with little Internet presence or official releases to speak of, but one that blew us away with their British-influenced psychedelic sound. What this band lacks in visibility is more than made up for by their playing, led by the charismatic playing of lead guitarist Bruno Meyrick-Jones and second guitarist (and vocalist) Leslie Stein. This 6-song set stretched to nearly 40 minutes with luxuriously paced songs, especially “Death March” which, despite the name, was not a death march to listen through. Most of this material appeared to be new aside from “Pillar to Post”, which streams on the band’s MySpace page and was also a highlight of their set. It has been a privilege to share live music with music fans across the world for the past five years, and a big part of that has been the chance to give more exposure to bands like Prince Rupert’s Drops.

nyctaper and I recorded this set with a combination of high-end microphones placed strategically around the room. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Shinji Masuko: October 10, 2011 Knitting Factory – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Full Show

[still from this video]

Shinji Masuko is a revered cult figure among aficionados of latter day Japanese experimental rock. Perhaps best known for his work in DMBQ, and more recently as a guitarist for Boredoms, Masuko is a renaissance man of the scene, also making a huge contribution in music journalism. He was also instrumental in raising money for Japanese musicians who were victims of the tsunami, an effort in which Oneida and NYCTaper participated. It was a rare treat for us stateside to get to see Masuko in a “solo” (with a bassist, whose name I regretfully do not know) performance at the Knitting Factory, where he played a complex guitar-based piece that referenced Japanoise, psychedelia, and Japanese folk and tribal music. A rapt crowd of music fans stood in awe of a piece that in some ways echoed Boredoms’ “Boadrum” pieces without the drummers. Masuko has also put out a recent set of compositions, Woven Music, on Brah Records, which is a can’t miss for fans of psychedelic guitar work.

I recorded this set with the AKG large-diaphragm microphones and a nicely balanced soundboard feed from the Knitting Factory team. There is a bit of DI hum on the board feed in quiet parts, but the recording is overall outstanding. You can stream the entire performance below, along with the usual downloads. Enjoy!
