Daniel Wayne: November 17, 2011 Glasslands – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

If you haven’t heard a truly great voice lately, you might want to check out Daniel Wayne. There’s no doubt that distinguishing yourself as a singer-songwriter can be difficult; it’s a style where it’s easy to be mediocre, difficult to be great. But that voice puts to rest the doubters – sweet through the middle and upper ranges and flawless on the high notes, Wayne is instantly recognizable as well as accessible. A good example can be heard on the haunting, lonely solo number, “Pub’s Crawl”, which also takes an abrupt turn into a religious hymn at the end. Humble and appreciative between songs, the Ohio native comes across likable as well (the Midwestern thing again?). As for his songs, many are tinged with a light country twang, and navigate both indie gloom and homespun folk themes with equal skill.

I will admit that I had not heard of Wayne before I caught this Glasslands Gallery set opening for Jessica Lea Mayfield (that recording here), but apparently I was behind the curve. A sizable crowd showed up to catch his opening set, and by the end, a pretty full house was paying rapt attention. Wayne split the set equally between solo acoustic and full-band electric numbers, and we have served up a streaming example of each below (along with the complete-set download, of course). When the full band comes in during the first chorus of “Birds,” you can tell that Wayne’s big voice is equally if not better suited to the full-band treatment. The full-band songs also give Wayne a broader palette for his arrangements, and he takes full advantage on songs like the countrified “Virgin Saint”, streaming below. Despite being the first opener of the night, Wayne put forth a full 50-minute set that alone was worth the show’s price of admission. As Wayne himself put it in a recent interview on the CBS News website, “Every time I get on the stage, I give it everything I have.” This was only my first Daniel Wayne performance, but that sure seemed to be the case.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK22 “open cardiod” microphones and a flawless soundboard feed provided by Josh Thiel, the house engineer at Glasslands. The sound is outstanding. Enjoy!

Mike Kinsella has been involved in many a highly-regarded project over the years – in particular, the Illinois native still does time in Joan of Arc with his brother Tim (our recent recording of them [HERE]), and before that, he and Tim were in Cap’n Jazz (our recent recording of them [HERE]). The man’s discography is longer than many artists twice his age – and most of it is quite good.

The latest Kinsella project to receive positive notice is his affecting solo effort, Owen, which he has been releasing albums under since 2001. Let me revise that – a lot of positive notice. I had not seen Glasslands this completely full in a long time, probably since the packed-to-the-rafters Yuck show last winter, or Bear In Heaven’s show there in 2009. Our friends at PopGun Booking knew what they were doing when they booked this for a Friday night.

Packed house or not, Kinsella made the show feel like an intimate evening in a family basement, with a freewheeling set that found him joking with the crowd during and in between songs, chatting with folks in the front row, riffing on fantasy football, hockey, airplane turbulence and (briefly) failed GOP contender Herman Cain, and making the best of some difficult technical issues. Alone onstage with his guitar (with audience members in his face on all sides), Kinsella delivered an hour’s worth of songs that were by turns melancholy, funny and whimsical, all in a trademark sweet voice that, for many of us, typifies the “emo” sound popularized in the 1990s. Even with such distractions as occasional PA buzzing and interference from Mike’s phone, his unadorned set was powerful and moving, and the crowd hung on every word. Much of his 2011 release Ghost Town was covered, but the set spanned the Owen catalog. Even Kinsella’s occasional flubs — a couple of songs ended prematurely — were greeted enthusiastically, to the point that he mocked the crowd for cheering for one aborted number. With some performers, this kind of thing could be annoying, but Kinsella is the type of amiable guy you can’t help but laugh with when things go wrong.  The show ended on that kind of note, when a massive equipment problem during the encore sent waves of static blasting through the PA. “That’s cool,” Kinsella said. “Thanks for coming guys. I’m done. It was fun. Now it’s over.” Mike smiled as he walked off, and the crowd roared its approval. It was that kind of night.

I recorded this set with a soundboard feed and Schoeps MK22 “open cardioid” microphones in the usual location I use in the venue.  After extensive post-processing to reduce or eliminate most of the sound issues (which, it should be added, were not the fault of the Glasslands house team), I am quite pleased with the quality of the recording. The Loom: December 03, 2011 Mercury Lounge – FLAC/MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

It’s been a busy month for Crossbill Record’s The Loom, a band that is no stranger to nyctaper.com. We were fortunate enough to catch them this weekend at Mercury Lounge while the band finishes up their recent tour, along with the band BOBBY, in support of the album Teeth which was released in November. The Loom also completed a Daytrotter session this past month and from what we saw during this Saturday night performance it was very clear that they are in peak form and as comfortable an ensemble as ever. In a superb 45-minute set, we heard much of the new album as well as two unreleased songs including an 8-minute, part a cappella epic, titled “Morning Song, Mountain Song” and the more gentle outro “Caretaker”.

For this recording, I mixed an excellent soundboard feed with a pair of Schoeps hyper-cardioid microphones from the audience. The sound engineers at Mercury Lounge always have it dialed in perfectly and this evening was no different. The resulting mix is a fantastic listen and I hope you enjoy!

Real Estate: November 23, 2011 Bowery Ballroom – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

Another of the bands we make no secret of our love for is Real Estate.  Over the past three years that we have been following the band, we have watched the mature and develop sonically, culminating with their release of the new album Days on Domino Recording Company – their first for the tastemaking label. Days continues a run of good news for the band, who have continued to tour hard and earn accolades from critics and fans alike.  This show at Bowery Ballroom was the culmination of a two-month tour of Europe and the U.S., and it couldn’t have made for a better sendoff into the Thanksgiving holiday the following day.  The respectful, excited crowd cheered through the longest set of Real Estate’s that we have seen to date at 70 minutes, which covered almost every song on Days and their self-titled debut, plus their cover of Felt’s “Sunlight Bathed the Golden Glow”, a favorite on this tour.  In a market crowded with bands following others’ lead, Real Estate have distinguished themselves with a laid-back, unique sound that always surprises.  They have almost singlehandedly come to define their hometown of Ridgewood, New Jersey where three of the band members grew up together, and which has served up great music from the band’s fellow travelers and other unique talents like Julian Lynch and tour openers Big Troubles.  We closed out this show thankful not only for this great show, but for the band’s continuing support and future prospects.

I recorded this set with a combination of a soundboard feed by Kenny, the house engineer at Bowery Ballroom, and Schoeps MK22 “open cardiod” microphones.  The results are excellent. Enjoy!

Jessica Lea Mayfield: November 17, 2011 Glasslands and April 1, 2011 Bowery Ballroom – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

Jessica Lea Mayfield sure is a heartbreaker.  She has the affect of the pretty, reserved, stonerish girl in the back of the class – you always wondered what that girl was thinking. If that girl actually was Mayfield, well, that girl would have a hell of a lot deeper feelings than her air of ironic detachment might suggest. She’d be all-but-given-up on God (“Bible Days”), head-over-heels in love (“The One That I Love Best”), or maybe flat-out horny (“Grown Man”).  And that voice of hers… well, it would hold your attention, if you weren’t already looking. More than a few gents at this Thursday night Glasslands show could be overheard discussing variations of “she’s hot!”

Lest you think the show was some kind of sausagefest, far from it – I’d say the majority of Mayfield’s fans at this show were women, and most of them seemed able to sing just about every word. This was the most packed I’ve seen Glasslands on a Thursday in ages, and it’s not hard to see why. Mayfield’s latest record, the Dan Auerbach-produced Tell Me, moves Mayfield beyond her neo-country confines and continues her tradition of strong songwriting – see for example “Run Myself Into the Ground”, which maintains a hint of twang but backs it with some solidly rock guitar work.  That came courtesy of Nashville’s Richie Kirkpatrick, whose band Ri¢hie has also served as Mayfield’s rhythm section at several recent shows. This was my first introduction to Jessica live, and I was extremely pleased with both the show and the crowd.  The only thing that could have made the night better would have been her performing her new cover of Nirvana’s “Lounge Act”!

Johnny Fried Chicken Boy had a similar experience with Mayfield this April Fool’s Day at Bowery Ballroom, where he recorded a somewhat different set before an equally pumped up audience. That show is also offered as a download here.

The Glasslands show was a fairly sophisticated recording for us, with a pair of DPA omnidirectional mics onstage, Schoeps “open cardiods” mounted an optimal distance from the stacks, and a soundboard feed running into two clock-synced decks run by myself and Johnny Fried Chicken Boy.  It is an outstanding capture at the very top of the range for this site.  John’s Bowery recording is an excellent four-microphone recording from our usual spot at Bowery that is also not to be missed.  Enjoy!

William Tyler: November 16, 2011 Glasslands – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

It seems about right to refer to William Tyler as an indie rock prodigy. Back when most guys his age were gawky college freshmen, the Nashville native was already playing with Lambchop. By age 21, he’d appeared on a Silver Jews record; two years later, he was laying down tracks with Will Oldham and Bonnie “Prince” Billy. Today he plays solo, as well as gigs with Lambchop, and he also has his own record label, Sebastian Speaks. In the somewhat rarified world of solo guitar players, Tyler is one of the most gifted and most recognizable for both his relative youth and his intense, uncharacteristic style. In giving his 2010 release, Behold the Spirit a “Best New Music”-worthy rating, Pitchfork’s Grayson Currin described Tyler’s style thus:

“Lambchop’s oeuvre should give you some hint as to what makes Tyler special. Just as Lambchop’s pan-American indie incorporates soul, rock, country and outsider music into one weirdly warped mold, Tyler integrates a dozen different approaches. He’s as comfortable with an electric as an acoustic, as accomplished conducting a long, coruscated drone as he is gliding through fingerpicked hymns. The English folk of Pentangle and the American hum of Tom Carter are clear references, as are Indian ragas and Appalachian ballads. Unlike the work of fellow polyglot Sir Richard Bishop, though, Tyler engages all of those muses at once, consistently folding them into surprising revelations.”

This PopGun Booking-sponsored show at Glasslands found Tyler dazed from coming straight from his flight but nonetheless ready to play and share new songs. The set featured only two Behold the Spirit numbers – “Missionary Ridge” and “Tears and Saints” – interspersed with new songs, classics and some hilarious storytelling (if you’re ever planning to play in Schwarzenburg, Germany, you might want to listen to Track 5 of this recording first). After playing the first three songs acoustic, Tyler switched to the electric for the final two numbers, including a 12-minute number from his 2008 record Deseret Canyon entitled “Crystal Palace, Sea of Glass”. Behold the Spirit is a lovely offering, even for those who may not be into many solo guitar albums, but seeing Tyler live is an entirely more elevated experience, a chance to grasp not just the what but the how of a great player like him.

I recorded this set with a soundboard feed provided by Josh, the house engineer of Glasslands, with some room ambiance from Schoeps MK22 “open cardiod” microphones. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Country Mice: November 16, 2011 Glasslands – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

Yes, New York, we do have our very own homegrown answer to Alabama’s Drive-By Truckers, and they’re called Country Mice. They don’t celebrate Southern roots they don’t have (two bandmembers are from Lawrence, Kansas), sure, but the rootsy tinge to their sound, married to big, balls-to-the-wall major chord riffs, will draw immediate comparisons. Although I had enjoyed sets of theirs before, this PopGun Booking‘-sponsored show at Glasslands showcased a tight, confident and mature band ready to take things to the next level. This set, opening for the Nashville guitar wizard William Tyler, led off with some new songs before moving into material from their recent Kanine Records release Twister and continuing to mix those in with the non-Twister material.  After the already-packed house had screamed its approval for songs like “Morning Son” and “Bullet of a Gun”, the set crescendoed, appropriately, at the final number, “Festival” off of Twister. With Twister under their belts and more good ideas coming, Country Mice are sure to keep winning converts on both sides of the Mason-Dixon.

I recorded this set with Schoeps “open cardiod” microphones to give a wide, expansive soundstage, coupled with a soundboard feed by Josh at Glasslands. The sound is excellent. Enjoy!

Fucked Up: November 15, 2011 Warsaw – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

Music is passion. Music is anger. Music is triumph. Music is sorrow. Music is love. Somehow a Fucked Up show manages to incorporate them all. To love Fucked Up is to understand the wonder and beauty of the clean, rising chords of “Let Her Rest”, the multilayered, joyous dueling-guitar attack of “Running On Nothing”, and the gravel-scrubbed squall of incomparable frontman Damian “Pink Eyes” Abraham’s vocals. What makes sense about a Toronto band with an absolutely crack rhythm section, who puts out double-LP rock operas (their latest, David Comes to Life), whose focal point is a hefty, shirtless man screaming into the mic (when it’s not passed into the crowd), carrying crowd-surfers on his back, and cracking off disarming riffs on everything from his weight to his penis? Yet there’s something that does. It works, in part, because Abraham may be – if not the best vocalist – the best frontman in rock right now. He is self-effacing, magnanimous to a fault, funny, and kind. And positively magnetic to watch, as he presides over the chaotic mosh pit party that his band’s music creates. After an earnest, intense set (and one of their best possibly ever) by Titus Andronicus where they paid tribute to the events of the day at Occupy Wall Street, I’ll admit that it was refreshing to crack a smile at Abraham, talking about his recent weight loss. “I felt better fatter” he said, “I don’t want you to think I’m selling out, that I’m changing”). Even talking about OWS, Abraham managed to be funny (listen to the banter tracks to hear his thoughts on OWS and why you shouldn’t “bend over”.. or as he rephrased it, “lie down”).

As noted, while Fucked Up’s sound is nominally “punk”, there is nothing simple or unfocused about its players, whose densely layered guitars are the sea in which Abraham and his antics swim. Already hailed as one of the most ambitious punk bands ever, David Comes to Life raised the stakes with a four-part opera told from the viewpoint of multiple unreliable narrators. From most bands, projects like these come off as weak gimmicks. The difference here is that Fucked Up have the chops to pull it off. This show at Warsaw in Greenpoint – a venue I had not visited in awhile, but is now being booked by the tastemaker Chris Diaz of the Knitting Factory and sure to have more great shows – was the second of two NYC shows in which the band performed the entire record straight through. And what a record it is – obvious as the band whipped through its piles and piles of pop hooks with punk seethe with occasional breaks in between series of songs for Abraham to chat with the crowd. After the encore break it was time for the deep cuts, including a very special performance of a song called “Unrequited Love” with bassist Sandy Miranda on vocals. After closing out the set with the track “David Comes to Life”, Abraham stuck around on stage to help one fan get his phone back, and another person to get their jacket – even after the house music went up. By the time I had broken down my equipment and left quite a bit later, I found Abraham standing outside the venue – still shirtless, on a fairly cold night – chatting with fans. Music is love, indeed.

I recorded this set with an excellent soundboard feed from the Warsaw team, plus the Schoeps supercardiod microphones on a high stand. The sound is excellent. Enjoy!

Sebadoh: November 11, 2011 Maxwell’s – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

The age-old debate I have with myself about going to Maxwell’s, especially on a weekend: Will this show be worth waiting for the PATH at 3 a.m.?  The thing is, every time you talk yourself out of a Maxwell’s show, you’re probably wrong.  If I hadn’t hit this Sebadoh show in this intimate (and for Manhattan/Brooklynites, remote) venue – despite that they were down the street at Music Hall of Williamsburg the following night – I’d have missed out.  This freewheeling show felt like seeing Lou Barlow and the reunited band appear in your living room.  Lou in particular was relaxed and chatting with the crowd, clearly enjoying the chance to keep things loose.  It didn’t hurt any that Lou and the band had plenty of friends in the crowd, many of whom could be heard ribbing him throughout the show.  Oh, and did you know “Willing to Wait” from Harmacy was going to be Ross and Rachel’s breakup song on Friends?  Well, now you do.  And tonight’s show-closing rendition – perhaps to spite the “flat” recording of the song that Lou hated – was pure, magical rock n’ roll.

The band were once known as “lo-fi pioneers”, but like many of their contemporaries from the early 90s, they’ve developed into serious players (one of Lou’s anecdotes concerned the $1000 guitar he was playing).  This set was Springsteen-esque in its sprawl – the first 13 tracks occur in the first half-hour of the nearly two-hour set – but given their large catalog of two- and three-minute songs, Sebadoh had a lot of ground to cover.  While rockers like “License to Confuse” are always thrillers, it was the band’s slower numbers like “Dream”, the poignant “Soul and Fire” and the band’s classic “Together or Alone” that stood out, allowing Barlow’s lyrics to shine.  The set focused primarily on the band’s more hook-driven, lyrical numbers, rather than some of the Eric Gaffney-penned more punkish material, and to good effect.  Among the band’s records, Bakesale was particularly well-represented (and also was just re-released this year by Sub Pop), as was Bubble and Scrape, while their seminal III, the first with Jason Loewenstein, was mostly-ignored.  By the end of the set, it was hard to imagine a favorite Sebadoh song the band didn’t play at this show, and indeed, I can’t think of one.  The PATH trade ride home was a long one, but damn, it was worth it.

I recorded this set with the Schoeps supercardiod microphones and a soundboard feed from Mitch, a new FOH engineer at Maxwell’s, who did a flawless job with the house mix all night.  The results are truly outstanding, absolutely one of my finest recordings of the year, and by far the finest fan recording of this band I have ever heard – yes, it’s that good.  Enjoy!

Hooray For Earth: October 27, 2011 Bowery Ballroom – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

Listen to one of their records, and you might wrongly conclude that Hooray for Earth are a “studio band”. Sure, there are big dance beats and rock hooks – especially on their debut EP Momo – but there is a lot to get into on these records that you might imagine would be hard to re-create live. Indeed, Noel Heroux, the creative force behind the band, is a wizard in the studio, and his beautifully produced, detailed compositions make for amazing headphone listening. But as we have continued seeing their shows over the past couple of years, HFE have also continued to develop as live performers who are comfortable turning Heroux’s studio compositions into a massive on-stage reveries. With their friends and fellow travelers Zambri providing the backing vocals once again (as they did at the Glasslands show in March), the more tribal, less four-to-the-floor tracks of the band’s latest, True Loves, came alive at this Bowery Ballroom homecoming show with tourmates Cymbals Eat Guitars (that recording here). Only two of the big, dance-y Momo tracks – “Rolling/Nectarine” and “Get Home” – made an appearance, as the set focused on the more mature True Loves material, including its two standout tracks, “True Loves” and “Black Trees”. Even those who didn’t know the band at all – and there were several near me – were chanting their name by the end of the set, and why not? This is the kind of band that is worth cheering for.

I recorded this set in the same manner as the Cymbals Eat Guitars recording, and the sound is excellent. Thanks again to Aaron Treptow for the hospitality. Enjoy!
