So far, 2015 has been a banner year for solo guitar records, with new releases from Daniel Bachman and Tashi Dorji plus the upcoming new Chuck Johnson record—just to name a few that I’m excited about. With the recently-released River, Daniel Bachman has somehow managed to out-do last year’s incredible Orange Co. SerenadeIt’s no accident the North Carolina transplant has released those two records on a couple of the state’s most prestigious labels—River on Three Lobed and Orange Co. Serenade on Bathetic. (And indeed no accident that Chuck Johnson’s Crows in the Basilica came out on Three Lobed and Tashi Dorji’s Appa came out on Bathetic, to further the connection to like-minded guitarists and labels.)

Bachman headlined an incredible bill of solo folk guitarists at Union Pool a few weeks back—the show, organized by Jeff Conklin/Avant Ghetto, also featured North Carolina songstress Sarah Louise, L.A.’s Itasca (Kayla Cohen), and Belgium’s Ignatz (Bram Devens). Bachman’s set treats us to songs off both River and Orange Co. Serenade, including two covers: “Levee” by Jack Rose and “Old Country Rock” by William Moore, giving us a good idea of who he sees as his forebears. Bachman may be young among the crowd of solo guitarists, but already can be counted among the genre’s greats. I have no doubt we’ll be seeing more great things from him.

I recorded this set with the AKGs clamped to the balcony and a board feed from Union Pool FOH, Kevin. There’s a little bit of ambient noise from the crowd and bar here—including one very exuberant fan—but Bachman’s guitar is loud and crystal clear. Enjoy!

Robert Millis may be best-known as a founding member of the long-running, experimental Climax Golden Twins and for his work with Sublime Frequencies, as a compiler and obsessive hunter of long-forgotten 78s from around the globe. At least, that was my familiarity with him prior to his set at Union Pool a couple months back, opening for friend and fellow seeker of the obscure, Sir Richard Bishop (his set posted here). Here, in solo mode, Millis’ set is true to the multivalence of his musical pursuits. It’s a combination of folk, spoken word, improvisation, drone, and noise. Something for everyone here: acoustic and electric guitar narratives “Notes on a Scandal” and “Pretty Polly”; the guitar drone piece, “The Demise of the Progressive Lens Routine” (referring to some earlier banter); and the haunting set closer, “Sign of Judgement.”

I recorded this set with the AKGs clamped to the balcony and a board feed from Union Pool FOH, Leah. The sound is excellent. Enjoy!

Dommengang is the latest addition to Thrill Jockey’s roster of some of the finest hard psych bands out there, including Eternal Tapestry, Pontiak, White Hills, Rhyton, and Arbouretum—just to name a few. Celebrating the release of their new record, Everybody’s Boogie, Dommengang stopped by Union Pool this past weekend for a one-off gig to air tracks off that record. Despite frontman Sig Wilson’s insistence that the band hasn’t played together in a year, it doesn’t show as the band immediately syncs into a lockstep groove that doesn’t waver during their thirty-plus-minute set. Underpinning Wilson’s guitar riffage are bassist Brian Markham and drummer Adam Bulgasem. The three are clearly comfortable playing together and after seeing their live set I get the impression that Everybody’s Boogie is one of those albums born of extensive jamming that’s then honed into an album. Favorites here include the chugging “CC,” “Her Blues” (for which the band made a video), and the twangy “Hats Off to Magic.” So far no more live dates have been announced but east and west coast dates are promised in support of Everybody’s Boogie.

I recorded this set with the AKGs clamped to the balcony. Though I got a board feed from Union Pool FOH Kevin, I set the levels a little high and ended up with some distortion so this recording only uses the room mics. However, Kevin’s expertise behind the board and Union Pool’s excellent sound system make for a terrific recording that captures all of Dommegang’s heaviness. I’m sure you’ll enjoy it!

To say Rick Bishop is peerless among contemporary guitarists is a bit of a half-truth. Along with his brother Alan Bishop (aka Alvarius B), they continue in the tradition of their long-running band Sun City Girls, who covered every genre of music imaginable. Rick Bishop’s solo music isn’t quite as wide-ranging but his body of work is massive, composed largely of solo guitar songs often steeped in the inflections of Indian and Middle Eastern music. And yet he always sounds like himself—his playing with Sun City Girls, as a solo guitarist, and as one-third of Rangda is inimitable. In a recent interview with Premier Guitar, he says of his craft: “My style is a mish-mash that comes out of improvisation, with mistakes and everything along the way. I never worry about what the style is, and whatever comes out, comes out.” Born of a love affair with a nineteenth-century guitar, his latest album for Drag City, Tangier Sessions, features seven improvised songs recorded in a room in the Moroccan city on a handheld Sony PCM D50 digital recorder. It’s a true collaboration, not between musicians but between a musician and the history of a truly singular instrument. The story of the album is the story of how Bishop was bewitched by this guitar and he’s spoken about it recently in interviews as well as in the appropriately titled “Guitar Talk” video promoting the album.

Bishop stopped by Brooklyn’s Union Pool on his ongoing tour for Tangier Sessions, bringing along the famed instrument. To see and hear Bishop play this guitar in person is simply jawdropping. His guitar musings, whether structured songs that have appeared on albums or in-the-moment improvisations, are brought to life in vivid detail by this guitar and his deft playing. Bishop improvises often, sometimes trading on a phrase or theme of a recorded song, and I’ve done my best to identify what I could. The most recognizable tracks are “Safe House” off Tangier Sessions and “Abydos” off Fingering the Devil. “Maqam” (if I hear him correctly) appears to be an improvisation named after a type of melody in Arabic music.

In addition to playing improvisations and a couple of his solo tracks, Bishop treats us to three Sun City Girls songs and each is indicative of that band’s irreverent humor: “Porno Shop” (from Horse Cock Phepner)  is about the closing of a porno shop for ostensibly moral reasons; in “Six Kids of Mine” (from Dante’s Disneyland Inferno) a father at the end of his rope resorts to infanticide; and in “Bitter Cold Countryside” (also from Dante’s Disneyland Inferno) a town bands together to murder a carpetbagging preacher. From Bishop’s “NPR shit” (his words!) to the absurdity of the Sun City Girls tracks, the crowd is with him all the way knowing full well that it’s not often you get to see a Sir Richard Bishop show like this.

I recorded this set with the AKGs mounted to the balcony and a board feed from Union Pool FOH Leah. Despite some ambient noise from the bar—inevitable for a quiet show like this—the sound is excellent and I only hope that it does justice to Bishop and his guitar. Enjoy!

Austin treble-punks Spray Paint wrangle more of a racket out of two guitars and a drum kit than most bands do with twice the instruments. Their minimalist onslaught is one of restraint, confining their infectious riffing to two or three minutes at a go (save for the eight-plus-minute “Cory’s Theme” that I’ll venture to guess has yet to be performed live). They’ve got three albums under their belt—two for Sacramento’s S-S Records (one self-titled, the other Rodeo Songs) and their latest, Clean Blood, Regular Acid, on Austin’s Monofonus Press. Spray Paint must write ’em even faster than they play ’em because a fourth, titled Punters on a Barge, is due out June 1 on Homeless.

Spray Paint showed up looking slightly road-weary at Union Pool last week, supporting Pampers along with Monofunus label-mates Beech Creeps. Nonetheless they delivered an energetic set, playing tracks drawn from across their recorded output. Picking favorites is a losing proposition here, so excuse the list of songs that follows. “Spock Fingers,” “Pink Pus,” and “Squaw” all hail from their earliest 7″s on S-S, which are way OOP so you’ll have to monitor Discogs closely if you want to grip one of those. Off the S-S LPs, they play “Canadian Trash,” “Bring Dumpster Back,” “George’s Theme,” and “Ultimate Umpire.” From Clean Blood, Regular Acid it’s “Rest Versus Rust” and then they follow with a couple off the forthcoming Punters on a Barge, “Ian’s Theme” and an ode to baseball’s unsung middle relief pitchers, aptly titled “Middle Relief.”

Beech Creeps: April 4, 2015 Union Pool – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

If you see Beech Creeps creeping your way, don’t be alarmed. Despite the name, they share little in common with the other beach-themed bands out there. No, Beech Creeps are more akin to the Stooges’ seedy glam-rock and the Scientists’ swampy proto-grunge than any chillwave analog synth project. Veterans of some highly-regarded Brooklyn noise acts, these guys travel under the assumed identities of PP Coolata, formerly of Ex Models and Knyfe Hyts; Yuka Mofongo, formerly of Pterodactyl; and Ron Llave, formerly of People Get Ready and Yeasayer. Their debut self-titled record came out just last month on Monofonus Press, but they’ve been playing out consistently around Brooklyn since 2013. Their Union Pool set brings the heaviness with an air of confidence that belies the relatively short period the band has been together. Six out of the seven tracks off their record are represented here but it took only a couple to convert the packed crowd into true believers. If the eerie “Everybody Loves the Beach” giving way to the full-on guitar crunch of “Teenage Boogie” doesn’t do it, you’ll no doubt join the ranks of the converted after hearing standouts “Son of Sud” and “Arm of the T Rex,” both of which spotlight the full range of the ’Creeps. You may feel a little dirty afterwards—just rinse off the sand and you’ll be fine.

Chris Forsyth & The Solar Motel Band: February 5, 2015 Union Pool

It’s hard to believe that Chris Forsyth’s second outing with the Solar Motel Band, Intensity Ghost, is merely four months old. So even as the album’s songs hardly feel worn-in, it’s exciting that the band has already begun airing new material live. “High Castle Rock” is one such new song, but also one we’ve heard before. The band has been playing it live since even prior to the release of Intensity Ghost and the long gestation period has proven fruitful. Charting its progress over the last few months, each performance burns a bit hotter than the last. This version of the song from last month at Union Pool is an unforgiving, relentless jam. Playing for a packed crowd convinced to brave the cold by a New Yorker writeup, the band airs a second new song, “The Rarity of Experience, Parts 1–2.” That one, along with their standout cover of Richard and Linda Thompson’s “The Calvary Cross,” illustrates Forsyth’s increasing comfort with vocals. From Intensity Ghost the band plays the title track, the album’s standout jammer “The Ballad of Freer Hollow,” and closer “I Ain’t Waiting.”

Mind Over Mirrors: February 5, 2015 Union Pool – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

Since 2007, Mind Over Mirrors has been the solo outlet for Jaime Fennelly’s explorations with an Indian pedal harmonium processed through analog electronics and synthesizers. With the recent cassette release of The Voice Calling on Immune Recordings, Fennelly is joined by vocalist Haley Fohr, better known as Circuit des Yeux. At Union Pool, the duo played in near darkness, set up on the floor rather than on the stage, with Fennelly and Fohr facing inwards towards an impressive array of electronics. The crowd gathered around close as the room became a tight fit with the bulk of gear arranged mid-floor. The dark stillness punctured only by the swirling rhythms of Fennelly’s harmonium and Fohr’s ritualistic vocal paroxysms, the subtle glow of electronics and the occasional clinking of glasses at the bar. The three songs, all off of The Voice Calling, are played as a single piece, one subtly transmuting into the next. Performed live, each song eclipses its recorded counterpart’s length as if expanding to fill its new, larger container and seeking out new spaces to inhabit. The setting necessitates a hyper-acuteness to the experience and at the set’s conclusion there is a collective release of held breath as the tension between harmonium and voice resolves. It’s unclear if the collaboration between Fennelly and Fohr is intended to be long-term or whether it’s a one-off experiment; but either way, the results both live and on the album are compelling.

Horse Lords: February 5, 2015 Union Pool – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

Horse Lords take a collage-like, mixtape approach to song and setlist construction, balancing instrumental jams with electronic texture pieces. Rather than beginning and ending, songs morph into one another, blurring the lines between compositions and styles. Hailing from Baltimore, a city that’s become well known for its rich music scene, Horse Lords perform a tightly-wound mathrock that blends the influence of African polyrhythms with motorik beats. Opening up for Chris Forsyth & The Solar Motel Band at Union Pool, their set features four untitled tracks followed by their signature tune, “Outer East,” a twelve-minute jam that explores each aspect of their sound. That song also appears on their second album, Hidden Cities, which came out on NNA Tapes this past November. It follows a few self-released mixtapes and a self-titled LP on Baltimore weirdo label, Ehse Records. What’s impressive about their performance is each player’s ability to play in the spaces between the other instruments. Nowhere does it sound like like these guys are playing over one another, despite the complex interlaced rhythms. Percussion is central to their mission. Many tracks feature two drum kits, but there’s also a percussive element to the way the other instruments (guitar, bass, saxophone, and electronics) are handled. While it was a New Yorker recommendation for Chris Forsyth that ensured a packed house, the crowd was up for diverse and experimental music and Horse Lords elicited a well-deserved, rapturous response.

Honey: January 28, 2015 Union Pool – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

Honey are a relatively new band who showed up hungry as the openers for Viet Cong at Union Pool recently. Composed of Cory Feierman on bass/vocals, Dan Wise on guitar/vocals and Will Schmiechen on drums, these guys showed up ready to play, putting even the very talented headliners on notice that mediocrity would not be accepted. The band members’ skill reflects some their resumes; one or more of them have been part of Amen Dunes, Psychic Ills and Stupid Party. Likewise, early invites to play with the likes of J Mascis, King Tuff, Endless Boogie, Crystal Stilts and Destruction Unit tell us that other bands are taking notice.

The band plays hard-charging rock n’ roll with a punk edge, reminiscent of an early, less self-serious Soundgarden.  After choosing the bold leadoff of a cover of Can’s “Connection”, the highlights of this set for me were “Monk”, a pounding number that made a fine lead-in to “Motherfucker Longhair”. Wise got his best showcase on “Enough”, where he was left plenty of room to solo despite the abbreviated set time. Honey expects to have a new LP release in the next couple of months, which should only continue to raise their profile in 2015.

I recorded the set with Schoeps MK4V cardiod microphones and a soundboard feed from house engineer Doug. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!
