Fiery Furnaces: November 13, 2021 Brooklyn Steel

Our live experiences with the Fiery Furnaces date back to the earliest days of this website. It would be fair to say that this band was in part responsible for the growth of the site circa 2007-2008, as we recorded them all around the area, from multiple times at Maxwell’s, Mercury, Bowery, and Music Hall, to singular shows at Sound Fix Records on Bedford (RIP), Socrates Sculpture Park in Queens, LPR, Southpaw (RIP), East River Park Bandshell (RIP), and Hiro Ballroom (RIP). We recorded them so often that we ended up getting credited as an “engineer” for the Fiery Furnaces live album Remember, which used some of our recordings. The attraction was natural for we live music fans — the band never played any of their shows or songs the same way twice, they consistently invited superb musicians to join them on tours, and the music was always challenging and cerebral. We couldn’t get enough of them.

But in 2011, the band’s core siblings Eleanor and Matt Friedberger decided to take a hiatus. I expected a few years of time away, a solo album or two and then a return. I didn’t expect the break to take a decade, but in 2020 the reunion was finally announced and well, you know what happened then.

Last November at Brooklyn Steel, the wait was over. Fiery Furnaces were back for a “hometown” show at long last. To be honest, I didn’t really know what entirely to expect. The two stalwarts of the band from last decade (Jason Loewenstein and Bob D’Amico) were not joining in the reunion, and of the new band members, we only were familiar with the most excellent Emily Lee (Shearwater, and others). But what I did expect was a new take on classic material, and likely the new single from 2020 (“Down At The So And So And Somewhere”). And in that respect, this show was entirely what I had hoped to see. The setlist contained a healthy dose from all of the band’s releases, of course segued with unexpected twists and turns — but always anchored by Eleanor’s meticulously delivered tongue-twisters and turns of phrase. Matt’s keyboard rack was liberally employed throughout and jibed perfectly with Emily electric piano — check out the interplay in a tasty “Benton Harbor Blues”, and the rocking “Ex-Guru”. The entire ninety-minute set worked like that, with no lulls, plenty of highlights, and no dip in energy throughout. It was great to have Fiery Furnaces back, even if for just one night. We hope it isn’t another decade before they return.

I recorded this set with the Neumann hypers set up at the Soundboard and mixed with a board feed. We are extremely happy with the results, and are pleased to offer this high quality download. Enjoy!

The Fiery Furnaces played three nights in the NYC area this weekend, but we only managed to catch the final show. From the scuttlebutt after their set, it seems like we picked the right night. From the very outset, the quartet was just electrifying. This tour’s setlist wrinkle is the twenty-eight song segue. The Furnaces opened with a little instrumental interlude which they would revisit several times during the set, and then immediately pounced on “Tropical Iceland”. For the next sixty-five minutes, the band never let up as they flowed complete and partial versions of cherry-picked multiple reworked numbers from their vast catalog one into the next. Highlights included the extra-melodic newest take on “Quay Cur” (stream below) and several songs from the under-appreciated masterpiece Bitter Tea. This show also featured a complete rarity — Eleanor’s mishandling of lyrics (“Straight Street”) — the shocking nature of the faux pas is a testament of her uncanny ability to master the voluminous and difficult word-strings that are Furnaces lyrics. The Furnaces also performed two new numbers which fit seamlessly into the massive segue — a good sign of things to come for the band.

This recording was captured with the Neumann microphones on a stand at the soundboard booth mixed with a soundboard feed. The sound quality is outstanding. Enjoy!

Fiery Furnaces: December 11, 2009 Music Hall of Williamsburg – Flac and MP3 Downloads

[still photo from this video]

The video linked above is from the Bowery Ballroom last night, the second of two shows the Fiery Furnaces played this weekend. After trips to Europe and the West coast, the Furnaces returned home to play Music Hall on Friday night. In a venue with which the band is intimately familiar — they’ve played here going all the way back to its existence as North Sixth, and friends of the band actually live in the building — Fiery Furnaces displayed the incredible musical interplay that has developed within the band. Throughout the night, Matt on guitar and Jason Loewenstein on bass prodded and cajoled each other, at times jokingly misplaying the downbeats (“Automatic Husband”) and during other number expanding the music to newer and deeper places (“Japanese Slippers”). The setlist was somewhat similar to the November show at Maxwell’s, and while this is the eleventh time we have recorded Fiery Furnaces for nyctaper, its the first time we have ever seen “Crystal Clear” and only the second time for “Asthma Attack”.

This set was recorded from the front left corner of the soundboard with the four-microphone rig and the sound quality is outstanding. Enjoy!

Fiery Furnaces: November 4, 2009 Maxwell’s – Flac and MP3 Downloads

The ever-evolving musical identity of the Fiery Furnaces was on display on Wednesday at Maxwell’s. As the band has performed as a traditional guitar/bass/drums/vocals quartet for more than a year, the format was the same but the band’s extensive touring and familiarity with each other has allowed the music to be extended and experimented. While Eleanor’s banter — “we went to Europe last month and we became a jam band” — was meant in jest, it is clear that the Furnaces are comfortable enough in the current configuration to open up and stretch the music. It was no coincidence that after the “jam band” comment, the band launched into an absolutely ferocious version of “Japanese Slippers” that highlighted Eleanor’s seat-of-your-pants vocal delivery with Matt’s increasingly angular guitar.

I recorded another soundboard/audience mix at Maxwell’s with incredible results thanks in large part to the work of the two sound technicians on hand to run the system. Enjoy!

The Fiery Furnaces are current on tour through the end of the month (dates here), and will also return to NYC for shows at Music Hall of Williamsburg on December 11, and Bowery Ballroom on December 12.

Fiery Furnaces: June 11, 2009 Le Poisson Rouge – Flac and MP3 Downloads

Its been almost a year since we last saw Fiery Furnaces live, at East River Park last July. In that time, the band has produced a new CD I’m Going Away, due to be released on July 1. At Le Poisson Rouge last night, the Furnaces performed “in the round”, or the center stage at LPR that permits the crowd to surround the performance area while the band can project in any direction — a set-up appropriate for this band.

The band consisted of the core touring band for the Furnaces, with Bob D’Amico on drums and Jason Loewenstein on bass, with Eleanor limited to vocals and Matt exclusively on guitar. It was strange to see the Furnaces without any keyboards on stage whatsoever (it was just 14 months ago at Southpaw when they were a two keyboard band!). As a guitar band, the quartet offered a straightforward rock version of the new I’m Going Away in its entirety, along with stripped down versions of nine other classics.

We recorded this set as a digital XLR plug-in to the state of the art multitrack digital soundboard at Le Poisson Rouge. We captured with the R-44 and the sound quality is superb, if a bit heavy on the vocals. Enjoy!

Exclusive: The next Fiery Furnaces concert in NYC will be the Williamsburg Waterfront Concerts on August 9.

Fiery Furnaces – Remember (Live Album) Due on August 19 – Free MP3

July 30, 2008
By

We reported a couple of months ago that nyctaper recordings were used for some of the sections of the new Fiery Furnaces live album Remember. When we spoke to Matt Friedberger after we recorded the Furnaces at East River Park a couple of weeks ago, he confirmed that nyctaper recording were on the record in at least 3 spots, and also that we were thanked in the liner notes. Thrill Jockey Records confirms that we are on the liner notes by name.

The 2-CD / 3-LP release is due in stores on August 19. All merch copies were sold out before the Furnaces arrived back in NYC, but we expect our copy in the mail any day. In the mean time, Thrill Jockey has released a sample MP3 from the release. The sample track sounds like a multitrack soundboard recording.

If there’s anything predictable about The Fiery Furnaces, its their unpredictability. The touring band continues to morph and the arrangements of the songs continue to evolve. We knew this would be another interesting Furnaces show when the nearly eight-minute opening “Navy Nurse” began with two minutes of Eleanor’s new improv lyrics, followed by a brief Mozart interlude from Annabelle, before proceeding to the song proper.

Annabelle’s multitude of melodic percussion added a nice touch to the band’s sound, perhaps a bit more appropriate than the strong presence of Kyle Hollingsworth’s brief time with the Furnaces. The other band changes were the return of Michael Goodman on percussion and Jason Loewentein‘s absence (he’s literally on summer vacation). Additionally, Matt played guitar on about half the songs — the first time he’s played guitar live in several years.

The renovated East River Park Bandshell had a great atmosphere, with an LES vibe mixed with the river surroundings. The acoustics of the shell were quite good and the amphitheatre seating offered a fine view for all in attendance. We recorded from the front rail next to the soundboard and captured an excellent recording, compromised only by the hum of the generator during quiet moments. Enjoy!

Fiery Furnaces Tonight (7/17) at East River Park

July 17, 2008
By

The Fiery Furnaces are performing a free show in a NYC park tonight — at the East River Park at 7 p.m. A detailed MAP of East River Park is [HERE].

Last August, their performance at Socrates Sculpture Park in Queens was one of the highlights of the concert year for nyctaper. This year, we will attempt to record Fiery Furnaces for the 7th 8th time, and the first time since the April show at Southpaw. The band has undergone some more changes, as temporary keyboard player Kyle Hollingsworth has returned to his solo work and guitarist/bassist Jason Loewenstein is back on board.

The Furnaces also added Annabelle of the unique “glockenbelle”, a percussionist who “plays piano, ukelele, recorder, glockenspiel, marimba, vibraphone, casio VL-5, il mignolo, zither, the underwood, and an array of small percussions” with thimbles. She will perform with the Furnaces tonight.

The opening band tonight is Drug Rug, a punk-pop band from Cambridge MA. We understand that the curfew is 10 p.m., so expect that Drug Rug will play from approximately 7:30 to 8:15 and the Furnaces with perform from 8:45 p.m. to 10.

New Fiery Furnaces Live Album Features NYCTAPER Recordings

May 19, 2008
By

We spoke today via email with Jason Lowenstein from the Fiery Furnaces. There was a rumor floating around the official Furnaces forum (temporarily offline for upgrades) that the new Furnaces live album Remember was culled entirely from “bootlegs”. This rumor is not completely true. The recordings that provide the raw material for Remember include over a dozen recorded by Jason himself, three multitrack recordings and five recordings from nyctaper.

Obviously, we are thrilled to have contributed material to an official release for one of our favorite bands. This kind of news makes all the hard work worthwhile.

Remember will be released in August by Thrill Jockey, but the album is finished and pressed and copies will be available at Fiery Furnaces merch tables at concerts this summer.

Visit Fiery Furnaces website or MySpace page for more concert dates.

Fiery Furnaces April 26, 2008 Southpaw – Flac and MP3 Downloads

The Fiery Furnaces threw another curveball at Southpaw last night. The touring band has changed, the arrangements for the Widow City material have changed, and some fairly obscure older songs have returned to the repertoire. All of these new developments are welcome adjustments to Furnaces live act — as they continue to offer interesting and fresh approaches to their recorded material. Jason Lowenstein, who played guitar on the Bitter Tea tour and bass on the Widow City tour has been replaced by Kyle Hollingsworth — the multi-talented keyboardist of the now-defunct jamband String Cheese Incident. The move to a two-keyboard approach added interesting prog-like elements to the material, and opened a slot for Eleanor to return to guitar — an instrument that she has not played live in several years.

Although the multiple format and arrangement changes offer a challenge to the listener, upon listening back to this recording each makes abundant sense. Eleanor is clearly proficient at guitar and the many effects of Matt and Kyle add dimensions to these songs that we have not heard before. The result was a 90 minute set of intelligent and uniquely satisfying Fiery Furnaces live material.

This recording was captured from the identical location and equipment as the previous night’s Big Dipper set. The quality is superb. Enjoy!
